Photograph: Mark Read The Jamaican reggae vocalist Jah Stitch died in Kingston on Sunday aged 69, following a brief illness. Although not necessarily a household name abroad, the “original raggamuffin” was a sound system toaster and DJ who scored significant hits in the 70s, later working as an actor and appearing in an ad campaign for Clarks shoes. Born Melbourne James in Kingston in 1949, he grew up with an aunt in a rural village in St Mary, northern Jamaica, since his teenage mother lacked the financial means to care for him. He later joined her in bustling Papine, east Kingston, but conflict with his father-in-law led him to join a community of outcasts living in a tenement yard in the heart of the capital’s downtown – territory aligned with the People’s National party and controlled by the notorious Spanglers gang, which James became affiliated with aged 11. As ska and rock steady gave way to the new reggae style on the nascent Kingston music scene, young James became a regular fixture of sound system dances. He drew his biggest inspiration from the Studio One selections presented by Prince Rough on Sir George the Atomic, based in Jones Town, and the microphone skills of Dennis Alcapone on El Paso, based further west at Waltham Park Road.

This is our 3rd anniversary issue, Natty Mark founding the magazine in June 2016, launching it at the 1st Mikey Dread Festival near Witney (an event that is also 3 years old this year). This summer sees a major upsurge in events involving members of The Dub family – Natty HiFi, Jah Lambs & Lions, Makepeace Promotions, Zion Roots, Swindon Dub Club, Field Frequency Sound System, High Grade and more – hence the launch of the new Dub Diary Newsletter at sessions. The aim is to spread the word about forthcoming gigs and sessions across the region, pulling different promoters’ efforts together. Give thanks to the photographers who have allowed us to use their pictures of events this month. We welcome some new writers this month too – thanks you for stepping up Benjamin Ital and Eric Denham (whose West Indian Music Appreciation Society newsletter ran from 1966 to 1974 and then from 2014 onwards). Steve Mosco presents a major interview with U Brown from when they recorded an album together a few years ago. Festivals big and small this month – Leo B returned to Boomtown to record their 10th anniversary and interviewed the legendary Susan Cadogan. Meanwhile the Natty HiFi crew returned to the Elder Stubbs Festival, held at Rymers Lane Allotments in Oxford for the tenth year in a row and Dan-I reached Notting Hill Carnival once again. Tune in for reports from the One Love Festival next month. We finally interview one of our own writers this month, giving Steve Mosco his due respect as founder of the Jah Warrior sound and label, as well as the pioneering online reggaemusicstore. I also get to review my teenage heroes Fishbone who came on a brief tour to the UK, now busy supporting the revitalized Toots and the Maytals (who play in Oxford on Saturday 13th October at the O2) and George Clinton’s Parliament/Funkadelic on some of their US dates. We have a new column by the founder of The Dub, Natty Mark Samuels, who brings us African Herbsman, which this month gives us advice from the motherland about herbs for the treatment of asthma. Firstly, apologies to our regular writer Eric Denham, whose Alton Ellis piece should have appeared in the singer’s birth month of September. Afrikan History Season swings into full gear this month in Oxfordshire, with the opening of the Windrush Years exhibition at the Museum of Oxford and the conference on the legacies of Emperor Haile Selassie I. A huge thank you to the organisers of the One Love Festival and all the artists and performers for making us feel truly welcome. I hope the reviews do the event justice. As for local events, Reggae On Tap goes from strength to strength and new venture Enjoy Yourself starts this month at The Swan in Eynsham on a regular basis thanks to long time The Dub contributor Richie Roots.     G-MAC BIOGRAPHY What could it be about fast-rising sing-jay, G-Mac, why he is highly favoured by music industry types, including the big names of the business? From cultural sing-jay Sizzla to crooners Natty King and Bushman, G-Mac has been embraced by some of the most influential music practitioners, several of whom are solidly in his corner, rooting for G-Mac’s ascension to the top. Emerging from a tradition of live performance practice mediated by (and informing) sound recordings, the relative autonomy of riddims and voicings in the Jamaican system challenges conventional ideas about the integrity of a song and the degree to which international copyright law applies to local conceptions, as enshrined in decades of practice, of musical materials as public domain. With the spread of the ‘riddim method’ to the sites of Jamaican mass migration, as evidenced by similar approaches in hip hop, reggaeton, drum’n’bass and bhangra, reggae’s aesthetic system has found adherents among artists and audiences outside of Jamaica. This paper maps out, through historical description, ethnographic data, and musical analysis, the Jamaican system as a unique and increasingly influential approach to music-making in the digital age. The advent of commercial, mass-mediated popular music genres in the twentieth century has contributed to the spread, in many music cultures worldwide, of a certain conventional ‘mainstream’ form of song, comprising an original, autonomous and reproducible entity with a relatively unique integration of lyrics, melody and chordal accompaniment. In mainstream Western music culture, the thirty-two-bar AABA structure, perhaps repeated twice or thrice with some sort of variation, constituted a quintessential type of this conventional song form.
