  • A Caribbean Taste TEXT
A Caribbean Taste of Technology: Creolization and the Ways of Making of the Dancehall Sound System Julian Henriques Technosphere Magazine, April 2017 Pre-publication draft, full text available from http://technosphere-magazine.hkw.de/p/18f097c0-0f15-11e7-be53- e1d41ebdbb0f The Caribbean has long been considered a melting pot of Old and New Worlds. Writer, director, and cultural researcher Julian Henriques looks at the Jamaican reggae dancehall sound system to explore how this street technology has found creolizing ways to prevail in the neocolonial power struggle between popular culture and Jamaica’s ruling elite Image 01: A Caribbean Taste of Technology album cover, Ariwa, 1985, artist unaccredited This article takes its name and inspiration from Mad Professor’s album A Caribbean Taste of Technology in response to the theme of this Technosphere issue.1 This makes a good place to start a discussion of creolization and technology – the dub reggae tracks of this album produced British producer Mad Professor and released in 1985, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewDTHfJqLwI So what I present here is a text and ideas version of the album as it were. The album cover artwork sets the tone. The Mad Professor himself lays back in a hammock enjoying the drink in his hand (the glass containing the entire Caribbean archipelago), the sun-soaked beach and the array the latest technological accoutrements of the era together with a selection of tropical fruits.2 The technology is evidently not a threat, but a source of pleasure; he is relaxed about it. This is the key message: in the Caribbean context new technologies are an invitation to be creative, an impulse that leads to Afrofuturism.3 This creativity is nowhere better expressed than in Jamaican music and the global influence this has in terms of sound, rhythm and phonographic performance techniques.

  • Suga Roy & Conrad Crystal 2015-Bio
SUGA ROY & CONRAD CRYSTAL - an energetic force impacting the world The energetic force of Suga Roy & Conrad Crystal has been powerfully impacting the international reggae scene ever since they joined forces some seven years ago. Remaining consistent hitmakers, the duo has left an indelible mark and are indeed two exceptional artistes who have decided to unify their voices in their message-filled songs geared towards past, present and future generations…and they have been able to successfully bridge the generation gap, as they embark on their mission to spread reggae’s powerful message. But how did fate bring the DJ and singer together? Simple. A love for each other’s masterful work. In 2002, Suga Roy, then a talented DJ and producer, was so impressed with Conrad Crystal’s 1986 release, ‘True Love’, that he sought out the singer and requested that both of them record a remake of the hit single. The remake was a success and both found that they had a natural chemistry. More combinations followed: a cover of the Pat Kelly original ‘Talk About Love’, followed by a cover of Gregory Isaacs’ ‘Love Overdue’. Their successful recordings continued, yielding the originals ‘Man Can’t Walk In Peace’ on the Yellow Moon label, ‘Mek Dem A Gwaan Suh’ on Stone Love’s Real Rock rhythm, ‘Tired A It’ and ‘Education Wise’. All powerful, thought-provoking tracks that enjoyed success on the local and international charts, as well as getting heavy rotation in the dancehalls and on the airwaves. ‘Education Wise’, an anthem in schools, held the number one spot on the Mega Jamz chart for three weeks, ‘Love Overdue’ peaked at number four on the RJR chart and both tunes rode Richie B’s Hot Mix chart.

  • The Dub Issue 28 September 2018
1 2 Editorial Dub Cover photo – Natty HiFi (Garvin Dan & Leo B) at Elder Stubbs Festival 2018) Dear Reader, Welcome to issue 28 for the month of Zebulon. Festivals big and small this month – Leo B returned to Boomtown to record their 10th anniversary and interviewed the legendary Susan Cadogan. Meanwhile the Natty HiFi crew returned to the Elder Stubbs Festival, held at Rymers Lane Allotments in Oxford for the tenth year in a row and Dan-I reached Notting Hill Carnival once again. Tune in for reports from the One Love Festival next month. We finally interview one of our own writers this month, giving Steve Mosco his due respect as founder of the Jah Warrior sound and label, as well as the pioneering online reggaemusicstore. I also get to review my teenage heroes Fishbone who came on a brief tour to the UK, now busy supporting the revitalized Toots and the Maytals (who play in Oxford on Saturday 13th October at the O2) and George Clinton’s Parliament/Funkadelic on some of their US dates. We have a new column by the founder of The Dub, Natty Mark Samuels, who brings us African Herbsman, which this month gives us advice from the motherland about herbs for the treatment of asthma. We also have our regular Cornerstone and From The Roots Up columns. Welcome to The Dub Editor – Dan-I [email protected] The Dub is available to download for free every month at reggaediscography.blogspot.co.uk and rastaites.com The Dub magazine is not funded and has no sponsors.

Review - DVD - Sting Jamaica 2003 http://www.reggae-vibes.com/rev_dvd/sting2003.htm Title Sting Jamaica 2003 (2 DVD) Artist Various Date January 24 - 2009 Label Charly Films/MVD Visual Format DVD - Region Free Languages English Subtitles None Length 360 minutes (approx.) Producer/Director Gunther Kutsch & Ira Bruggmann - Jean Luc Young Here's a nice release that we've enjoyed watching. Since it started back in 1984, Jamaica's Sting Festival, "The Greatest One-Night Reggae Show on Earth", has established itself as the Island's premier one-night reggae show. Held each year in Portmore, Sting is renowned as being a showcase for the best reggae acts, primarily dancehall, which Jamaica has to offer. Its performers invariably rise to the occasion and it has witnessed many memorable performances over the years. This 2-disc DVD set recorded live in Portmore, St. Catherine, Jamaica on December 27, 2003 features vital dancehall acts like Elephant Man, Beenie Man, Vybz Kartel, Assassin, Bling Dawg and Wayne Marshall. There's also a good part filled with reggae vocalists such as Junior Kelly, Sanchez, Anthony B and the German reggae vocalist Gentleman. Rumor has it that the most bottles, clashes and gunshots "rained" at Sting 2003! Fact is that the concert was brought to a dramatic and premature end following an on-stage brawl between the often-controversial 1 of 3 3/30/2009 3:18 PM Review - DVD - Sting Jamaica 2003 http://www.reggae-vibes.com/rev_dvd/sting2003.htm Ninjaman and Vybz Kartel, who subsequently both made up. But there are also lots of memorable moments (musically wise!).

  • Junior Kelly – “Urban Poet”
Junior Kelly – “Urban Poet” Label: Irievibrations Records Produced by: Irievibrations Records Distribution by: Groove Attack Digital Download Release: 09-10-2015 Junior Kelly, who is among Jamaica’s finest Conscious Voices, Songwriter extraordinaire and Reggae Music’s most prolific exponent, is set to release his 10th studio album for Austrian based label Irie Vibrations. It is scheduled for release on October 9, 2015. Junior Kelly feels confident that this album will be a game changer similar to his mega hit “Love so Nice”, and hopes that it will shine a light on Reggae Music and provide Reggae fans with much needed salvation, substance and food for thought, to uplift them in these difficult times. The album is a Masterpiece that Junior Kelly describes as “Pop Culture”, where Roots & Culture meets Pop, which is an eclectic mix culminating with incredible live riddims, exciting musicianship and vocal artistry at its best. Junior Kelly claims it as his best work to date and is extremely happy with the outcome, as it is the first time he was able to have such artistic freedom. He states “it was an absolute pleasure working with Irie Vibrations as they listened to me and gave me full autonomy to express myself.” The album has 16 beautiful tracks which encompass more than just Reggae, a little dancehall, RnB, Soul, Jazz and shows the artiste’s growth and maturity, from the Reggae infused “High Hopes”, “Power to the People”, “Nuh Dig It Up” to the smooth RnB tracks “Sneak Peek”, “Stay With Me” and “In Love” to the soul searching “No one is Higher” and “Everybody Needs Somebody” to the Jazzy “Hooked on Mary”, this album will leave you on a musical high! It was Junior Kelly’s game changing roots reggae mega hit single “Love So Nice” that established him as a star throughout Jamaica in the year 2000.

:::::: Pum Pum Rule Jamaican Dance: An Analytic Response to the Inability to Recognize Female Sovereignty in Dancehall Leslie-Ann Fullerton “All I want to be is a Jamaican Dancehall Queen. If this is not possible, I will be satisfied writing about women in Jamaican dancehall.” - Leslie-Ann Fullerton. Leslie-Ann Fullerton was born and raised in a Christian home in Jamaica. She later became a dedicated lover and participant of Jamaican dancehall as a dancehall “mogela” [model], which played an instrumental role in informing this essay. Leslie-Ann is currently a 4th year student at the University of Toronto pursuing a double major in Caribbean Studies and Political Science. She was the 2012-2013 president and is currently the 2013-2014 Co-President of CARSSU. In reading this essay, Leslie-Ann hopes that the reader takes the advice of Chimamanda Adichie and beware of “The Dangers of Telling a Single Story” about a people and its culture. She implores the reader to look at women in Jamaican dancehall from a positive perspective. Jamaican music has had a close relationship with expressing the island’s various socio-economic and political stages. In Chude- Sokeis’s work, POST-NATIONALIS GEORGRAPHIES: Rasta, Reggae, and Reinventing Africa,1 the author traces Jamaica’s societal changes through music. This includes analyzing the relationship between post-nationalism, Rastafarianism, Dancehall, and women response to these phenomenon. Particularly, the emergence of dancehall introduced a rise African women participating in overt sexual expressions that was considered indecent. In this light, dancehall was rejected by the “ideological underpinnings of the elite culture”2 and their desires to mold nationalism in Jamaica into a replica of European model.

  • The Riddim Method: Aesthetics, Practice, and Ownership in Jamaican Dancehall1
Popular Music (2006) Volume 25/3. Copyright © 2006 Cambridge University Press, pp. 447–470 doi:10.1017/S0261143006000997 Printed in the United Kingdom The riddim method: aesthetics, practice, and ownership in Jamaican dancehall1 PETER MANUEL† and WAYNE MARSHALL‡ †127 Park Ave, Leonia, NJ 07605, USA ‡88 Holworthy Street, Cambridge, MA 02138, USA Abstract The Jamaican system of recording and performance, from the 1950s to the present, constitutes a distinctive approach to notions of composition, originality and ownership. Emerging from a tradition of live performance practice mediated by (and informing) sound recordings, the relative autonomy of riddims and voicings in the Jamaican system challenges conventional ideas about the integrity of a song and the degree to which international copyright law applies to local conceptions, as enshrined in decades of practice, of musical materials as public domain. With the spread of the ‘riddim method’ to the sites of Jamaican mass migration, as evidenced by similar approaches in hip hop, reggaeton, drum’n’bass and bhangra, reggae’s aesthetic system has found adherents among artists and audiences outside of Jamaica. This paper maps out, through historical description, ethnographic data, and musical analysis, the Jamaican system as a unique and increasingly influential approach to music-making in the digital age. The advent of commercial, mass-mediated popular music genres in the twentieth century has contributed to the spread, in many music cultures worldwide, of a certain conventional ‘mainstream’ form of song, comprising an original, autonomous and reproducible entity with a relatively unique integration of lyrics, melody and chordal accompaniment. In mainstream Western music culture, the thirty-two-bar AABA structure, perhaps repeated twice or thrice with some sort of variation, constituted a quintessential type of this conventional song form.
