Jolly CAST OF CHARACTERS CARLY, a mousy girl, ready to finally strike back. GEORGIA, her quirky best friend. PEYTON, a bully dealing with personal issues. Physically imposing over the other two. Female, but could also be male. PLACE The playing field behind a Florida middle school. TIME The present. 6 Middle Schoolin' It (GEORGIA carefully puts an old fashioned lunchbox on the ground. CARLY enters.) CARLY: Did you get it? GEORGIA: It's in there. CARLY: Sweet! Can I see? GEORGIA: No. CARLY: Why not? GEORGIA: It bites, and if it bit you, you would die, and then I'd have to tell your mom you're all dead, and your mom scares the cheese whiz out of me. CARLY: How did you catch it? GEORGIA: It was basking on a rock. I put the box down, and chased it in with a broom. CARLY: That was incredibly brave. GEORGIA: I am an incredibly brave girl. CARLY: I owe you. GEORGIA: You do. You owe me huge. Like, if I'm dying and I need a kidney, you gotta give me one of yours. CARLY: I will give you both of them. And my liver. GEORGIA: Why would I need a liver? CARLY: Why would you need a kidney? GEORGIA: Maybe I got bitten by a coral snake and my kidney exploded. CARLY: That's what it does? GEORGIA: I don't know. Google said they were the most poisonous snake in all of North America. CARLY: Do you think it will hurt? GEORGIA: Donating a kidney? This is a perusal copy only. GEORGIA: You mean, if the plan works. CARLY: The plan will work. GEORGIA: Google didn't say. (Beat.) But I don't think that dying from a bite of the most poisonous snake in North America could possibly—even a little bit—not hurt more than anything. In fact if you ask me, I think it'd be like getting hit by a car on the inside. (Beat.) CARLY: Good. (PEYTON enters.) GEORGIA: Peyton! (Carly spins.) CARLY: Peyton. PEYTON: Hey. (A beat.) CARLY: I...I brought it, so you don't have to hit me or anything. Just take it. PEYTON: I'm not... (Beat.) I need to talk to you. CARLY: You can just take it and go. It's in the box. Which you can keep. PEYTON: I don't want your lunch. CARLY: Yesterday, you said— PEYTON: Yesterday...I'm sorry, okay? CARLY: What? PEYTON: I apologize. I'm sorry I hit you. I'm sorry I pulled your hair. And I'm sorry I called you a...I'm sorry for what I said. This is a perusal copy only. As television must always create its spaces and places on the screen, what, then, is the significance of the varying emphases as well as the commonalities constructed in televisual high school settings in UK, US, and Japanese television shows? This master’s thesis considers how fictional televisual high schools both contest and construct national identity. In order to do this, it posits the existence of the televisual school story, a descendant of the literary school story. It then compares the formal and narrative ways in which Glee (2009-2015), Hex (2004-2005), and Ouran koukou hosutobu (2006) deploy space and place to create identity on the screen. This musical comedy, focusing on a high school glee club, incorporates numerous stereotypes and real-world teenage struggles. This thesis focuses on the queer characteristics of four female personalities: Santana, Brittany, Coach Beiste, and Coach Sue. I investigate how their musical performances are producing a constructive form of mass media by challenging hegemonic femininity through camp and by producing relatable queer female role models. In addition, I take an ethnographic approach by examining online fan blogs from the host site Tumblr. 'Look Tan, you got yourself into this mess, don't expect me to get you out of it. Anyway, are you sure that you are pregnant?' '99%. I was due the day after the party and that's two week ago. Come with me please, I really do need some moral support. Please, Mich, say yes. It's dark by four o'clock and we can slip in then without anyone seeing us. Against my better judgement I agreed and at 4.15 that afternoon we slunk into the clinic after checking that there was no-one who knew us in the vicinity. The receptionist looked up. 'What can I do for you?' As it was Tanya who wanted the test, she answered. 'We've come for pregnancy tests.' 'We,' I hissed. 'It's you that needs the test not me.' The receptionist appeared not to have heard and handed us two forms. 'Just fill these in and the nurse will be with you in a few minutes.' Tanya grabbed the forms and hurried to the table at the back of the room with me in close pursuit. 'What do you mean by saying that I want a test? I'm not the one that's pregnant. You can go and tell them that you made a mistake and that you will be the only one having the test.' Tanya slipped into her most persuasive mood.

West Theatre in December, bringing enter- tainment to children and families in the area with a production of Disney’s “Mulan.” The performance is one that students have been asking to do for a number of years, said Di- rector Brian Adams. The show is sure to entertain with its fill of good music and action. “Disney titles are always really good with name recognition, but I love ‘Mulan,’” Adams said. “I love the music of ‘Mulan’ ... I found a great script based on the movie and it was a good fit.” This year, 28 thespians will take on the pro- duction, a number that’s larger than normal. The plot line allows the cast to get creative, depicting a colorful culture. “Besides the music, I think what’s cool is the design of this show. It’s Chinese themed,” said Adams. He said the play will give the audience some- thing authentic to look forward to. The money raised during the production will go straight back into the program.

For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] Hospitality, Subjectivity and Ceremony: Glee Confronts Hetero-normativity Abstract As Matei Candea and Giovanni da Col note in their Preface to a special issue of the Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute (2012), the last decade has seen a resurgence of interest in the notion of hospitality: From Levinas’s phenomenological ethics and Serres’s study of parasitic relationships, through to Agamben’s musings on ‘inclusive exclusion’ and Derrida’s invention of the neologism hostipitality’ (ii). They note also that political, literary and legal scholars have approached this topic through studies of the roles of host and guest, which has led to theorizations of related concerns including migration, postcoloniality, sovereignty and international law. This article also approaches the concept of hospitality by analyzing the roles of host and guest in a specific text, namely, an episode of the television series, Glee (2009–). My interest is how the characters in the episode articulate and embody these roles, and how their interactions are used to challenge conventional understandings of subjectivity and of hospitality.
