BIOGRAFIA CÉLIA SIQUEIRA FERRAZ, filha de Severino Ferraz de Valões e Maria da Soledade Siqueira de Valões, nasceu em São José do Belmonte-PE, em 04 de março de 1988. Cursou o nível fundamental no Colégio Municipal Dr. Arcôncio Pereira e o nível médio na Escola Professor Manoel de Queiroz, na mesma cidade, concluindo em 2005. Em agosto de 2006, ingressou no Curso de Agronomia da Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco, Unidade Acadêmica de Serra Talhada, onde foi bolsista de iniciação científica durante quase a totalidade do curso, sob a orientação dos Professores Cláudia Helena Cysneiros Matos de Oliveira e Carlos Romero Ferreira de Oliveira. Graduou-se Engenheira Agrônoma em março de 2011. No mesmo mês e ano iniciou o Curso de Mestrado em Produção Vegetal na Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco, Unidade Acadêmica de Serra Talhada, em Serra Talhada - PE, sob a orientação da Professora Cláudia Helena Cysneiros Matos de Oliveira, concluindo em fevereiro de 2013. Aceria litchii (Keifer) (Acari: Eriophyidae) is considered one of the main pests of the litchi crop through the world. The control of this pest mite in the main production areas is done by pruning of the infested branches and application of pesticides. However, there is no pesticide registered in Brazil for control of this mite in the litchi crop and pruning is considered expensive by many growers. In addition, pesticides are often inefficient against most eriophyid mites since they frequently live under protective structures of the plant. This all reinforces the need of research for alternative control practices that are sustainable in the long term, such as biological control, which consists of the use of natural enemies to reduce the population density of pest species. Given this, initially, surveys were carried out in litchi orchards seeking natural enemy species with potential to control A. litchii. Later, two new species of the Iolinidae family, which were found during these survey, were described and illustrated. Then, two species from the Phytoseiidae family collected during the field survey were selected, Phytoseius intermedius Evans & MacFarlane and Amblyseius herbicolus (Chant), and the ability of these predators to control A. litchii in litchi plants was investigated under field conditions. Moreover, it was investigated whether the supplementation of the A. herbicolus population with alternative food (cattail pollen) could improve the control of A. litchii. Most of the mite species found belong to families that were predominantly predators. Phytoseiidae was the most diverse family of mites, with a total of 11 species. The two new species described and illustrated in the Iolinidae family were Pausia litchiae n. sp. and Pseudopronematulus nadirae n. sp.. Moreover, it was shown that the incidence of erinea on plants increased throughout the experiment on all treatments. In the same way, the pollen addition did not provide greater population growth for A. herbicolus on the litchi plants. In conclusion, these results showed the arthropod diversity found associated with the erinea induced by A. litchii, highlighting the large number of predatory mites. Furthermore, the description of the new species of mites in the Iolinidae family was also shown. In addition, it was observed that P. intermedius and A. herbicolus presented limitations to control the increase of the incidence of erinea induced by A. litchii. We evaluated six phytoseiid (Acari: Phytoseiidae) species, collected in South America: Euseius ho, Typhlodromalus aripo, Typhlodromalus tenuiscutus, Neoseiulus californicus, Neoseiulus idaeus, and Galendromus annectens. Their effectiveness as a biological control agent was estimated by measuring rates of prey con- sumption and oviposition in relation to prey density under optimal laboratory conditions. Prey consumption by E. ho, T. aripo and T. tenuiscutus continued increasing linearly up to the highest density of prey evaluated (200 prey eggs) for a maximum of 93, 101 and 59 prey in 24 h. For the other predators, prey consumption levelled off at prey density of 30 or more. Maximum daily consumption was 40, 35 and 18 eggs for N. californicus, N. idaeus and G. an- nectens, respectively. Except for T. tenuiscutus, daily fecundity appeared to reach a plateau at the prey densities tested. Higher maximum daily oviposition rates were registered for T.

Volume 13 April 26, 1963 Number 17 COOPERATIVE ECONOMIC INSECT REPORT HIGHLIGHTS ALFALFA WEEVIL larval counts relatively high in areas of Alabama, North Carolina and Virginia; damage noticeable in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, and in New Castle County, Delaware, (pp. 425, 442). SWEETCLOVER WEEVIL feeding conspicuous on sweetclover foliage in several areas of Washington County, Utah, and adults severely damaged seedling sweetclover in Darke and Shelby Counties, Ohio. (p. 425). PEA APHID increasing and causing damage to alfalfa in several areas. High in southwest Missouri; light to heavy in Oklahoma; light to moderate in Washington County, Utah; moderate to heavy in Eddy County, New Mexico; heavy statewide in Arkansas; and severe in areas of Virginia. Less abundant on alfalfa in eastern Washington than at same time in 1962.

Godfrey1, Carolyn Pickel2 1Dept. of Entomology, University of California, Davis, Davis, CA 2University of California Cooperative Extension, 142 Garden Highway, Suite A, Yuba City, CA In recent years cucumber beetles (Chrysomelidae) have become increasingly problematic as pests of melons grown in the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys of California. The primary source of damage comes from feeding on the rind of the developing fruit by adults, and occasionally by larvae, which creates corky lesions and renders the fruit unmarketable, especially for export. Larval feeding on the roots may also be contributing. There are two species of cucumber beetles that are pests of California melons: Western spotted cucumber beetle (Diabrotica undecimpunctata undecimpunctata Mannerheim) and Western striped cucumber beetle (Acalymma trivittatum Mannerheim). Monitoring of both species in Sutter and Colusa Counties began mid-season in July 2007 to investigate biology, distribution, and population dynamics but has not yet produced conclusive results. A study comparing the effects of different insecticide treatments with and without a cucurbitacin-based feeding stimulant called Cidetrak® was initiated in the summer of 2007. Cidetrak did appear to reduce beetle numbers when combined with either Spinosad or low doses of Sevin XLR Plus. None of the treatments however, reduced cosmetic damage sustained to the fruit. The limited plot size may have compromised the integrity of the treatments. Future studies will utilize field cages or larger plots in order to prevent movement between treatment plots.

Amblyseius lentiginosus Denmark & Schicha, 1974 is newly recorded in New Zealand and its males and females are redescribed in detail. Amblyseius obtusus was recollected and a revised key to New Zealand species of Amblyseius is provided. Proprioseiopsis lenis (Corpuz & Rimando, 1966) is reported from New Zealand for the first time and its females are described in detail. A key to New Zealand species of Proprioseiopsis is also included. A rare species, Phytoscutus acaridophagus (Collyer, 1964), was rediscovered and its males and females are redescribed in detail. Three species, two in Amblyseius and one in Proprioseiopsis, are transferred to the genus Graminaseius: G. bidibidi (Collyer, 1964) comb. nov., G. martini (Collyer, 1982) comb. nov. and G. exopodalis (Kennett, 1958) comb.
