    THE BROTHERS GRIMM AND HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN Cay Dollerup, Copenhagen, Denmark Abstract In broad terms the genre we usually term ‘fairytales’ first appeared in France, whose culture and language are central to in European history, when Charles Perrault published Les Contes de ma Mère l’Oye (or Contes) in 1697. The genre was invigorated in Germany, notaby by the Kinder- und Hausmärchen (1812) of the brothers Grimm. Both France and Germany were large nations and dominant in European cultural life, but small Denmark also stands out in the history of the Euro- pean fairytales in the 19th century. The reason is that the Dane Hans Christian Andersen wrote Eventyr (1835) that have also become well-known internationally. Andersen never credited the brothers Grimm as a source inspiration about his inspiration for writing fairytales. In this paper I shall discuss the history of the Grimm Tales, the Danish response to them, the way the German Tales were edited, the story of Andersen’s life and the reasons why he never credited the brothers Grimm for inspiring him to write fairytales. His narratives were not the creations of his fertile ima- gination only. But the story behind this, with the brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen as the towering figures, is complex. The brothers Grimm and Napoleonic Europe The brothers Grimm began collecting tales in the kingdom of Westphalia.1 Unlike today’s unified Germany, Napoleonic ‘Germany’ consisted of numerous more or less autonomous fiefs, principalities, and kingdoms. One of these was the landgravedom of Hesse with less than 10,000 square kilometres and half a milli- on inhabitants.

They were very hard-working pupils throughout their education. However, intheir father died at the age of 44 from pneumonia. This was a tragic time for the Grimms because the family lost all financial support Grimms Fairy Tales relied on their aunt, Henriette Zimmer, and grandfather, Johanne Hermann Zimmer. At the age of 11, Jacob was compelled to be head of the household and provide for his family. After downsizing their home because of financial reasons, Henriette sent Jacob and Wilhelm to study at the prestigious high school, Lyzeum, in Kassel. In school, their grandfather wrote to them saying that because of their current situation, they needed to apply themselves industriously to secure Grimms Fairy Tales future welfare. Shortly after attending Lyzeum, their grandfather died and they were again left to themselves to support their family in the future. The two became intent on becoming the best students at Lyzeum, since they wanted to live up to their deceased father. They studied more than twelve hours a day and established similar work habits. They also shared the same bed and room at school.

    4 Grimm Brothers and Other Tales CHAPTER 4 4.2 LESSER KNOWN TALE: HERR KORBES FOCUS QUESTIONS: ? • What can we learn about people and their cultural values from literature? • How do people explain the unpredictable events that occur in life? STANDARD #1 CULTURE. LESSON OVERVIEW: This lesson offers students the opportunity to read one of the Grimm Brothers’ lesser known tales: Herr Korbes (Herr is the German word for Mr.). The activities may be used in an English Language Arts/Reading class to teach the literary structure of plot sequence. There are two activities provided: a listening/writing activity for 3rd – 4th grade, and an activity for 5th – 8th grade. Depending on the reading levels of the students, the activities may be interchangeable. TEACHER BACKGROUND INFORMATION: A plot is a causal sequence of events, explaining what hap- pens in the story. The plot draws the reader into the character’s lives and helps the reader understand the choic- es that the characters make. A plot’s structure is the way in which the story elements are arranged. It is a timeline of events in the order they oc- curred. The Grimm Brothers’ tale Herr Korbes provides an excellent vehicle for teaching sequencing. With great subtlety, this story exemplifi es how people at- tempt to explain the unex- plainable events in life, hence, “What a bad man Herr Korbes must have been.” In this way a horrible death is justifi ed. It is human nature to want an explanation of the unpredictable. Most children are familiar with some of the more common Grimm’s fairy tales.

Februar 2012 in der Aula der Alten Universität Marburg Von Heribert Prantl Es gibt Kolleginnen und Kollegen, die journalistische Koryphäen als ihre ersten Lehrer nennen dürfen. Es gibt andere, die haben berühmte Väter. Wieder andere können berichten, dass die Lektüre von Tolstoi, Dickens oder Balzac ihr Erweckungserlebnis gewesen sei. Ich habe mit Maria Prantl lernen dürfen, sie war meine Großmutter, sie war für mich eine Berühmtheit, nicht so sehr, weil sie vierzehn Kinder geboren und ich dementsprechend viele Onkel, Tanten, Cousins und Cousinen hatte, sondern weil die ebenso resolute wie gütige Bauersfrau spezielle Hobbys hatte: Briefe schreiben, die Bibel lesen und die Grimmschen Märchen. Ich war ihr Schüler. Mit der Bibel und mit den Grimmschen Märchen habe ich, als ich viereinhalb Jahre alt war, lesen gelernt. Aber davon und von meiner Großmutter haben Sie ja nichts gewusst, als Sie mir die Auszeichnung mit dem Brüder- Grimm-Preis zugedacht haben. Ich war deshalb erst einmal ein wenig verdutzt und habe im Textarchiv meiner Süddeutschen Zeitung angerufen. Wenn ich die hohe Ehre habe, einen Preis zu entgegennehmen zu dürfen, der den Namen der Brüder Grimm trägt, dann wollte ich mir schon sicher sein, dass ich auch selbst den Namensträgern die Ehre gegeben habe. Ich wollte also wissen, wie und wie oft in meinen Texten die Brüder Grimm vorkommen. Aus dem SZ-Archiv kam sodann ein überraschend großer Stapel mit Leitartikeln und politischen Essays, der mir den Einfluss von Jacob und Wilhelm Grimm auf meine Kommentierung der deutschen Politik recht deutlich machte: Zu Kohl, Genscher, Strauß und Schäuble, zu Gerhard Schröder und Angela Merkel, zu Edmund Stoiber, Seehofer und Westerwelle gesellen sich da in meinen 25 Jahren als politischer Journalist ganz gern die Frau Holle, der Hans im Glück, der Froschkönig, der Teufel mit den drei goldenen Haaren und der getreue Heinrich.

    The Grimms’ Kinder- und Hausmärchen as a Product of Modernity Tama Te Puea Braithwaite-Westoby A thesis submitted for the degree of Master of Arts At the University of Otago Dunedin New Zealand 5 May 2015 Abstract In this thesis I investigate the extent to which the Brother Grimms’ Kinder- und Hausmärchen (KHM) can be considered as a document of modernity. This gives ground to argue that over the course of more than forty years between 1810- 1857 this collection underwent a series of editorial changes, which might be perceived as a consequence of modernity. This line of inquiry involves investigating the concept of modernity in the socio-cultural context of late eighteenth to mid-nineteenth century Germany. In essence, I understand modernity as a conceptual shift from old Europe to the emergence of the modern era, which occurs at a time during which the KHM were created. Focussing on the concept of modernity may yield new insight into the field on the Grimms’ Märchen and the period in which they were written. In particular, I wish to explore how the Grimms’ Märchenbuch may have functioned as a product of this shift. In the first instance, the story began in 1806 when the Brothers Grimm conceived the KHM under the shadow of the Napoleonic wars (1799-1814). The wars and other events around this period forced many to harbour more flexible views of the world than ever before in order to deal with the growing awareness of contingency, transience, loss of certainty and perpetual change. My thesis therefore aims to validate the claim that modernity may have played a vital role in shaping the Grimms’ views of the world and thus their Märchen.

Die Kinder- und Hausmärchen in der Übersetzung Die Sammlung der „Kinder- und Hausmärchen“ der Brüder Grimm ist bekannt- lich ein Welterfolg, der ohne Übersetzungen in andere Sprachen nie möglich gewesen wäre. Im Internet schreibt man heutzutage viel zum Thema „Mär- chen der Brüder Grimm in der Welt“. In entsprechenden Beiträgen wird häufig die Zahl der 160 Sprachen angegeben, in die die deutsche Märchensammlung angeblich übersetzt worden ist. Eine so hohe Zahl von Übersetzungen muss jedoch korrigiert werden, denn es ist einer der vielen Mythen, die um die „Kin- der- und Hausmärchen“ entstanden sind. In seiner Einleitung zu dem Kongress- band „Märchen, Mythen und Moderne. 200 Jahre Kinder- und Hausmärchen der Brüder Grimm“ schreibt Ehrhardt (2015: 5) folgendes: „Belegbar sind im Bestand der Kasseler Brüder-Grimm-Sammlungen jedoch nur Übersetzungen in etwa 70 Sprachen und Dialekte; alle anderen Zahlen und Meldungen ent- behren derzeit einer nachprüfbaren Grundlage“. Eine so präzise Korrektur des weitverbreiteten Mythos muss jedoch die Rolle der Übersetzung an sich nicht verringern. Die Grimmschen Märchen wurden sehr früh in andere Sprachen übersetzt (1816 ins Dänische, 1820 ins Holländische) und der Erfolg der englischen Übersetzung von Edgar Taylor (1823) ermutigte die Brüder zur Veröffentlichung der sog. Kleinen Ausgabe (1825) mit den fünfzig bedeutendsten und kindergerechtesten Märchen. Die Kleine Ausgabe, die ihre Entstehung der englischen Übersetzung verdankt, erfreute sich beim Publikum großer Beliebtheit und verhalf dann der Großen Ausgabe zum Durchbruch, die sich vorher sehr schlecht verkauft hatte. Ohne Übersetzung und ohne Übersetzer wären die ursprünglich deutsch- sprachigen Märchen nicht weltweit populär geworden.
