But, ere long, Edward, being anxious to again join his adherents, entrusted himself to the guidance of a faithless monk, who betrayed him at Llantrisant, and his fate soon afterwards was consummated beneath the blood-stained towers of Berkeley. The ruins, which are extensive, are chiefly early English and decorated, besides later buildings by Sir P. Hoby, erected about 1650. There is a curious crypt. called a refectory. Even in its desolation, Neath Abbey still looks imposing, though the state of the ruins reflects little credit on their owner. In a field adjoining the house of Court Herhert, recumbent beneath a rude cross-inscribed stone, may be seen the well-sculptured effigy of an ecclesiastic, holding the model of a church. Only a small portion of the CASTLE remains at present. It is said to have formed part of the possessions of Testyn ab Gwrgan, by whom it is supposed to have been originally built. It is certain, however. that Richard de Granville, if not the founder, materially improved it. BAGLAN is a village in the parish of its own name and in the Neath Union, half a mile from the Briton Ferry station, two and a half miles from Neath, situated near the sea. In this village is a well, noted for its medicinal qualities. There are also many collieries, tin-plate and fire-brick works. The living is attached to Abetavon vicarage, which is of the annual value of £154, and is in the gift of G. Llewellyn. Esq. The Rev. D. P. Morgan,M.A., of Jesm~ College, Ox:on, is the incumbent. The Vale of Neath can boast of the most beautiful ecenery and waterfalls in . The , from which it takes its name. flows through this picturesque district from its rise on the Brecknock Hills, and, receiving a number of small tributaries, descends rapidly through the deep ravines, making falls of considerable elevatio11 and great beauty.
