    Hendrickson and Minckley Cienegas of the American Southwest 131 Abstract Cienegas The term cienega is here applied to mid-elevation (1,000-2,000 m) wetlands characterized by permanently saturated, highly organic, reducing soils. A depauperate Vanishing Climax flora dominated by low sedges highly adapted to such soils characterizes these habitats. Harris Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County Science Series 42 September 15, 2015 Cover Illustration: Pit 91 in 1915 An asphaltic bone mass in Pit 91 was discovered and exposed by the Los Angeles County Museum of History, Science and Art in the summer of 1915. The Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History resumed excavation at this site in 1969. Retrieval of the “microfossils” from the asphaltic matrix has yielded a wealth of insect, mollusk, and plant remains, more than doubling the number of species recovered by earlier excavations. Today, the current excavation site is 900 square feet in extent, yielding fossils that range in age from about 15,000 to about 42,000 radiocarbon years. Beauv. includes four species in Russia: A. leptophylla and A. cruciata are restricted to the southern flank of the Russian Far East and two others, A. saccata and A. lindenbergiana occur mostly in the subartcic zone of Asia and the northern part of European Russia. Asterella cruciata is recorded for the first time in Russia. The study of the ribosomal LSU (or 26S) gene and trnL-F cpDNA intron confirmed the placement of Asterella gracilis in the genus Mannia and revealed the close relationship of A. leptophylla and A. cruciata, and the rather unrelated position of A. saccata and A. lindenbergiana. The phylogenetic tree includes robustly supported terminal clades, however with only weak support for deeper nodes. In general, Asterella species and M. gracilis from Russia show low levels of infraspecific variation. An identification key and species descriptions based on Russian specimens are provided, along with details of specimens examined, ecology and diagnostic characters of species. Резюме Род Asterella P. McHorse ABSTRACT Character-rich craniodental specimens are often the best material for identifying mammalian fossils to the genus or species level, but what can be done with the many assemblages that consist primarily of dissociated postcrania? In localities lacking typi- cally diagnostic remains, accurate identification of postcranial material can improve measures of mammalian diversity for wider-scale studies. Astragali, in particular, are often well-preserved and have been shown to have diagnostic utility in artiodactyls. The Thousand Creek fauna of Nevada (~8 Ma) represents one such assemblage rich in postcranial material but with unknown diversity of many taxa, including camelids. We use discriminant function analysis (DFA) of eight linear measurements on the astragali of contemporaneous camelids with known taxonomic affinity to produce a training set that can then be used to assign taxa to the Thousand Creek camelid material. The dis- criminant function identifies, at minimum, four classes of camels: “Hemiauchenia”, Alforjas, Procamelus, and ?Megatylopus. Adding more specimens to the training set may improve certainty and accuracy for future work, including identification of camelids in other faunas of similar age. For best statistical practice and ease of future use, we recommend using DFA rather than qualitative analyses of biplots to separate and diag- nose taxa. Edward Byrd Davis. Mazor1, John Olson2, Matthew Robison2, Andrew Caudillo2, and Jeff Brown1 1Southern California Coastal Water Research Project, Costa Mesa, CA 2California State University at Monterey Bay, Seaside, CA September 2019 Technical Report 1089 This report was prepared for the San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board. i EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Intermittent and ephemeral streams comprise a large portion of stream-miles in the San Diego region, yet tools to assess stream health have so far only been available for perennial and long- term intermittent streams, meaning that watershed assessments are incomplete — in some watersheds, substantially so. Managers therefore have only a limited ability to assess the effectiveness of their programs. Consequently, nonperennial streams, especially ephemeral streams, are often excluded from regulatory and management programs. To address this gap, researchers at the Southern California Coastal Water Research Project (SCCWRP) and California State University at Monterey Bay (CSUMB) have developed new assessment tools to assess the ecological condition of intermittent and ephemeral streams when they are dry. Although these tools require additional refinement with larger data sets than are currently available, they demonstrate the feasibility of quantitative ecological assessments that transcend hydrologic gradients. Biological indicators can quantify responses to stress in dry streams SCCWRP and CSUMB developed new bioassessment indices for dry streams that follow the successful approaches used in perennial and intermittent streams, such as the California Stream Condition Index (CSCI).
