By Daniel Spiller Contributing Writer Ben Affleck, just when I thought you couldn’t get any dumber, you go and do something like this… Affleck And totally redeem yourself! But seriously, Dumb and Dumber quotes aside, Ben Affleck’s directo- rial debut Gone Baby Gone is good enough to make you forget about his debuts participation in duds like Daredevil and Gigli. He commands the film as though it is already second nature to him. Like last year’s winner-of-all-that-is-good The Departed, Gone Baby Gone takes place in Boston. Patrick (Casey Affleck), along with his Gone girlfriend Angie (Michelle Monaghan), is a private investigator who is hired by the family of a young girl who has gone missing. Patrick has strong ties with the neighborhood locals, and thus an advantage over Baby the regular police when it comes to obtaining information. But the more Patrick discovers, the less he understands, and what constitutes morality takes hold as the central theme. So on paper, Gone Baby Gone looks just like an old-fashioned Gone detective story, and in a way, it is. It doesn’t do anything gimmicky or flashy; it just tells a straightforward narrative. On the other hand, it is within the story itself that the film gains OUR TAKE: its complexity. Predictability of the outcome is low because so few clues are given to help the audience in solving the mystery before the characters do. For example, at one point I had thought everything was figured out; the case was closed, done and done. In reality, we were only halfway through the movie, and twists aplenty lay ahead. But not the ridiculous, out-of-this-world kind of twists that leave you rolling your eyes. No, these are the good kinds of twists that you hope for in these kinds of stories. This particular story happens to be based on the novel by Dennis Lehane. This isn’t the first time one of Lehane’s novels has made it to the big screen; in 2003, Clint Eastwood directed the film adaptation of Mystic River. Both Mystic River and Gone Baby Gone seem to owe a lot to their original works because both tell such engaging stories. As mentioned before, this is Ben Affleck’s first outing as director, yet he avoids mistakes one might expect from a newbie. In fact, his style seems polished, professional and low-key. He doesn’t appear desperate to overdo anything just to make a name for himself; he plays it cool and straightforward, and it works out for the best. See Gone, page 21 Image Courtesy of Miramax Films Veara gives lively show The Shins electrify Atlanta fans By Sam Lawrence not an amazing band, but they By Jennifer Aldoretta Contributing Writer were respectable, and above all, fun Contributing Writer to watch. It is a ticket to fame and seen as the only way to make a living with your music. Most artist would accept a record deal without hesitating. Being an artist myself I fall into the same category, at least before conducting this research. As we know record labels tend to take a decent chunk of artists’ revenues. Goal of this the- sis is to find out ways how a modern-day artist makes money, and can it be done so that it would be better to remain as an independent artist. What is the difference in volume that artist needs without a label vs. with a label? Can you get enough exposure and make enough money that you can manage without a record label? Technology has been and still is the single most important thing when it comes to the evo- lution of the music industry. New innovations are made possible by constant technological development and they’ve revolutionized the industry many times. First it was vinyl, then CD, MTV, Napster, iTunes, Spotify etc.

  • Rolling Stone “Danger Mouse Looks Through a Label Darkly”
Danger Mouse Looks Through A Label, Darkly | Music News | Rolling Stone Page 1 of 2 Danger Mouse Looks Through A Label, Darkly Behind his "Dark Night of the Soul" collaboration with Mark Linkous and David Lynch by: Austin Scaggs The final product isn't exactly what Danger Mouse envisioned, but the cutting-edge producer breathed a heavy sigh of relief with the release of Dark Night of the Soul , a multimedia package he created in tandem with songwriter Mark Linkous (the creative force behind Sparklehorse) consisting of a record and a large-form book of photos commissioned from filmmaker David Lynch. For the album, Danger Mouse and Linkous created moody backing tracks, then offered them to 10 vocalists who were charged to write lyrics and vocal melodies (contributors include Iggy Pop, the Strokes' Julian Casablancas, the Shins' James Mercer, Suzanne Vega and Pixies' Black Francis). "We had no intention of making a star-studded record," says Danger Mouse, born Brian Burton. "It's just when we started thinking about these people we just thought, 'Well, of course they'd sound good on a record together.' " The catch, which Danger Mouse describes as "bittersweet," is that the CD mounted in Dark Night of the Soul package is completely blank. Buyers are slyly encouraged to use the recordable disc to capture the music from the Internet, where it is widely available as a free, though illegal, download. Danger Mouse's inability to package the music with the book stems from a long-standing contractual disagreement with EMI, who retainrights to some of his music.

  • While Crafting Songs for the Fray's Third Album
