Román se vyznačuje použitím mnoha žánrových konvencí, mezi nejvýznamnější z nichž můžeme zařadit konzervativní román nebo národní příběh, historický román a sentimentální román. Centrální román je postupně interpretován skrze optiku těchto tří žánrů a dále porovnán s dalšími relevantními romány z tohoto období, Self-Control od Mary Brunton, The Old English Baron od Clary Reeve a The Wild Irish Girl od Lady Morgan. Cílem tohoto srovnání je kontextualizace románu Jane Porter a pozorování podobností nebo rozdílů ve zpracování určitých témat či motivů. Nejdůležitějšími motivy je životní zkouška, ve které vyjde najevo charakter hrdiny, kontinuita, univerzálnost až jakási parabolická povaha historie, důraz na ctnosti a použití sentimentálních konvencí pro zobrazování pocitů postav. Této analýze předchází interpretace dvou autorčiných předmluv, z nichž novější (1831) tvrdí, že román, k němuž je připojena, je historický román vydaný ještě před tím, než se objevilo Waverley Sira Waltera Scotta, který je běžně pokládán za zakladatele tohoto žánru. Starší předmluva vydaná současně s románem v roce 1803 naopak zařazuje Porter mezi autory konzervativních románu namířených proti myšlenkám francouzské revoluce. Tento nesoulad mezi oběma předmluvami navzájem a navíc mezi textem románu, byl impulsem pro analýzu obsaženou v této práci. v Abstract in English The aim of this thesis is to interpret and categorize the lesser known novel Thaddeus of Warsaw by the Scottish author Jane Porter. The novel is characterised by the use of several genre conventions – most importantly those commonly found in the conservative anti-jacobin novel or national tale, historical novel and novel of sensibility. Porter’s novel is interpreted from all three perspectives and also compared to other relevant novels from roughly the same period: Self-Control by Mary Brunton, The Old English Baron by Clary Reeve and The Wild Irish Girl by Lady Morgan. The comparison aims at the contextualization of Thaddeus of Warsaw and the observation of similarities and differences in the approach to certain themes or motives. The most important motives is that of a trial that shows the character of the protagonist in action, continuity, universality and even a certain parabolic nature of history, an emphasis on virtue and the use of sentimental conventions to portray the emotions of characters. This analysis is preceded by an interpretation of two authorial prefaces. The new one (from 1831) claims that the work it comments on is a historical novel published even before Sir Walter Scott’s Waverley, usually considered the first historical novel. The older preface published alongside the novel in 1803 however characterizes Porter as a conservative, anti-jacobin author. This discrepancy between both prefaces and the main text of the novel formed an impulse for the analysis in the thesis. vi Table of contents Wilson Barbour's Bruce and Haryls Wallace: Complements, Compensations and Conventions In 1488 and 1489, John Ramsay co~ied Hary's Wallace and John Bar­ bour's Brnce into a pair of manuscripts. John Jamieson edited them as a pair in 1820.2 Before and after Jamieson, other readers felt a similar in­ clination to place the two poems side by side.3 This impulse is natural, for the Brnce and the Wallace are alike in several basic ways. I truly hope that we leave on 29th March with a no deal and thus trade on WTO terms while we seek a new Free Trade deal with the EU. May's negotiated withdrawal deal is terrible for the UK and would keep us in the Common Market, Single Market and still under the ECJ. We would be a rule taker and have no say on any rules the EU put in force. To my mind there are only two choices... either we remain in the EU or we leave with no deal. Accepting May's negotiated deal would make things far worse for the UK. May has consistently lied to us and frankly is damaged goods. The Conservative party also lied to us as did Labour when they ran on a manifesto that clearly stated we would lave the EU. In a future election we must do everything we can to remove those MP's that lied to us. Also I have to say on a personal basis I'd love us to just leave as that would mean we could then focus on measures that would improve things for the UK and stop all the useless discussions that are going on. While I have been documenting this for historical purposes I have to say I'm rather sick fed up with it all.

    The New College Porters Robinson Tower, where the Porters’ Lodge is situated today—Holywell Quadrangle, New College, Oxford Those in the know are well aware that the porters at New College are by far the best of any Oxford college, and worthy of many a New College Note. But this is not an essay celebrating them. Nor shall I be discussing that other famous porter of New College, William Porter (c. 1450–1524), warden from 1494 to 1520. The college’s ninth warden, Porter hailed from Newent, Gloucestershire. In 1470 he proceeded to New College as a theology scholar from Winchester College, and held a fellowship here until 1483. Eleven years later, he returned to us as warden, before ending his days as Precentor of Hereford Cathedral. He is certainly as well known to Brasenose College as he is to us in New College. In his will he left an important benefaction to 1 New College Notes 14 (2020), no. 5 ISSN 2517-6935 The New College Porters Brasenose (founded 1509), which included endowing a fellowship for a man from the county of Herefordshire, a so-called Porter’s scholar. Our library at New College is not celebrated for its holdings of late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century fiction;1 the strengths of our rare book holdings lie largely elsewhere. But New College Library does hold a hitherto unremarked cache of Porter books—seven books written by two sons and two daughters of another William Porter (1735–79), an army surgeon of Irish descent, whose five children, all in some way distinguished, were born during the 1770s in the city of Durham.

She made her contribution through the establish• ment of Sunday and day schools for the poor in the Mendip Hills of Somerset, and through the composition of "improving" books for rich and poor. These didactic works were vehicles for her social and religious philosophy, and Hannah More intended that they should be the means for conversion to these ideas.

    Przemysław Deles PLACES OF WORSHIP IN WARSAW IN THE AGE OF PARTITIONS IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE SOURCES - ROLE, CONTEXT, MEANING. TOWARDS AN ANALYSIS Places of worship are one of the most important elements of the urban struc- ture, often determining the cityscape and acting as juncture points in the spatial organization1. The present text is concerned with the role of churches and chapels in Warsaw and its vicinity in the period of partitions in the ac- counts of visitors from the British Isles and North America; the contexts in which they operated and the meaning ascribed to them. This article is based on a variety of sources: travel narratives, autobiographies, reportage, mem- oirs as well as analytical writing. The texts mentioned were published over the course of a century in a shifting political, social and religious environ- ment. The timespan reflects changes in: the contexts in which various places of worship appeared, the attitude of the author, as well as the nature of the descriptions. The sources document encounters with the city that occurred between the last partition of Poland in 1795, or, more specifically, 1804 (the year mentioned by the earliest text) and 1915, when the last Russian troops left Warsaw. One may wonder whether it is feasible to consider American and Brit- ish sources on an equal footing. However, it becomes clear from reading the 1 B. Żyłko, Introduction in W. The introduction provides a context for the thesis, exploring trends in the aesthetic thought of the period, particularly as they concerned women writers. The first chapter then shows how Reeve, reflecting her Old Whiggish upbringing, used romance to emphasise the importance of morality to the country. In doing so, she allotted women a wider socio-political function. Her use of the roles offered by romance and romance criticism was essential to this.
