This thesis aims to undertake a feminist revision of literary history, reclaiming and discussing some lost women writers. It is argued that novels by Scottish women in the early nineteenth century are of significant cultural interest, as well as having literary value in their own right. In the first chapter, there is discussion of the major feminist and historicist critical works which inform the debate in subsequent chapters and the specific writers selected for study are introduced. Scottish literary histories are surveyed, pointing up their under­ representation of women fiction writers of the early nineteenth century; nineteenth and twentieth century views of the same writers are compared. Each of the subsequent chapters includes brief biographical details of the writer(s) discussed and a consideration of modern and nineteenth century views of their writing, where this material is extant. As women writing in the early nineteenth century, the novelists discussed in this thesis were working within severe cultural constraints. They were expected to remain within the 'proper sphere' of the reputable woman. The simple act of publishing their 3 writings was considered by some enough to place them at the verge of that proper sphere. Often not only their writings, but also their personal character came under the scrutiny of the contemporary critics, hence their frequent preference for anonymity. The ways in which early nineteenth century women writers responded to the cultural constraints upon them are discussed throughout. Consideration is given in each chapter to the genres in which the novelists chose to work; their work tends to belong to genres considered too popular or feminine to hold significant literary value and this may account in part for their exclusion from literary history. Attention to genre also helps the reader to understand their works and further to recognise the ways in which writers transgress or even subvert generic conventions. This approach moreover serves to demonstrate the range and variety of women's fiction writing in the period. In each chapter there is a detailed examination of the novels themselves, and an attempt to locate the writers within traditions of Scottish and women's writing. The individual writers whose works are considered in Chapters Two to Six respectively and the genres within which their novels are positioned are as follows: Jane Porter and Eliza Logan, historical romance; Elizabeth Hamilton and Grace Kennedy, the didactic tradition; Mary Brunton, the courtesy novel; Susan Edmonstone Ferrier, the 4 novel of fashionable life and Christian Isobel Johnstone, whose novels are found to defy genre classification. The final chapter reiterates the cultural constraints within which the women were writing, before concluding that Scottish literary history is greatly enriched by the inclusion of early nineteenth century Scottish women novelists. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 Abstract This thesis examines the role of women at the Royal Institution of Great Britain in its first decade and contributes to the field by writing more women into the history of science. Using the method of prosopography, 844 women have been identified as subscribers to the Royal Institution from its founding on 7 March 1799, until 10 April 1812, the date of the last lecture given by the chemist Humphry Davy (1778- 1829). Evidence suggests that around half of Davy’s audience at the Royal Institution were women from the upper and middle classes. This female audience was gathered by the Royal Institution’s distinguished patronesses, who included Mary Mee, Viscountess Palmerston (1752-1805) and the chemist Elizabeth Anne, Lady Hippisley (1762/3-1843). A further original contribution of this thesis is to explain why women subscribed to the Royal Institution from the audience perspective. First, Linda Colley’s concept of the “service élite” is used to explain why an institution that aimed to apply science to the “common purposes of life” appealed to fashionable women like the distinguished patronesses. These women were “rulers of opinion,” women who could influence their peers and transform the image of a degenerate ruling class to that of an élite that served the nation.

I truly hope that we leave on 29th March with a no deal and thus trade on WTO terms while we seek a new Free Trade deal with the EU. May's negotiated withdrawal deal is terrible for the UK and would keep us in the Common Market, Single Market and still under the ECJ. We would be a rule taker and have no say on any rules the EU put in force. To my mind there are only two choices... either we remain in the EU or we leave with no deal. Accepting May's negotiated deal would make things far worse for the UK. May has consistently lied to us and frankly is damaged goods. The Conservative party also lied to us as did Labour when they ran on a manifesto that clearly stated we would lave the EU. In a future election we must do everything we can to remove those MP's that lied to us. Also I have to say on a personal basis I'd love us to just leave as that would mean we could then focus on measures that would improve things for the UK and stop all the useless discussions that are going on. While I have been documenting this for historical purposes I have to say I'm rather sick fed up with it all.

    The New College Porters Robinson Tower, where the Porters’ Lodge is situated today—Holywell Quadrangle, New College, Oxford Those in the know are well aware that the porters at New College are by far the best of any Oxford college, and worthy of many a New College Note. But this is not an essay celebrating them. Nor shall I be discussing that other famous porter of New College, William Porter (c. 1450–1524), warden from 1494 to 1520. The college’s ninth warden, Porter hailed from Newent, Gloucestershire. In 1470 he proceeded to New College as a theology scholar from Winchester College, and held a fellowship here until 1483. Eleven years later, he returned to us as warden, before ending his days as Precentor of Hereford Cathedral. He is certainly as well known to Brasenose College as he is to us in New College. Our library at New College is not celebrated for its holdings of late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century fiction;1 the strengths of our rare book holdings lie largely elsewhere. But New College Library does hold a hitherto unremarked cache of Porter books—seven books written by two sons and two daughters of another William Porter (1735–79), an army surgeon of Irish descent, whose five children, all in some way distinguished, were born during the 1770s in the city of Durham.

A paraphrase is given of most of the more difficult poems, but no single thread of interpretation can fully guide the explorer through the intricate paths of a symbolism where most of the figures of speech have a two-fold meaning, and some are employed systematically in a three­ fold, or even a four-fold sense. " Allegory addressed to the intellectual powers while it is altogether hidden from the corporeal understanding is my definition," writes Blake, "of the most sublime poetry." Letter to Butts from Felpham, July 6th, 1803. Such allegory fills the "Prophetic Books," yet it is not so hiddon from the corporeal understanding as its author supposed. An explanation, continuous throughout, if not complete for side issues, may be obtained from the enigma itself by the aid of ordinary industry.
