It aims to study how the tone systems are regionally and socially varied. Key words: tones, variation, Thai Song, Lao Song, Tai Dam, Black Tai ISO 639-3 language codes: soa, blt 1. Introduction Thai Song people have been addressed by various names such as Thai Song, Thai Song Dam, Lao Song Dam, Lao Song, Song, Tai Song Dam, Tai Dam or Black Tai. 1 The name “Thai Song” refers to people dressed in black costumes. These people migrated from Muang Thaeng (Myang Teng or Muoi) 2, Sipsongchutai (Sipsong Chao Tai) in the northern part of Laos. This location used to be under the Luang Prabang government (Sribusara 1987). The original settlement of Thai Song people in Thailand was in Phetchaburi province. Later on, Thai Song people moved to other provinces such as Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Suphanburi, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Sakhon, Samut Songkhram, Nakhonsawan, and Phitsanulok.

Method of Study The purpose of this paper is to use linguistic criteria as the base for identifying the ethnic groups on the Korat Plateau. The main reason for using linguistic criteria for collecting data and classifying the ethnic groups are 1) Language is normally a convenient, accessible, observable and objective symbol of group identification. The differences in the languages used by different groups of people in this area are generally quite obvious. It is therefore relatively easy for the people to answer the questionnaire about what language they and their neighbours speak in the home. 2) Language spoken in the home is generally a strong indicator of ethnic identification. If one has shifted the language spoken in the home, very often there is no tie to the former ethnicity. 3) Sometimes it is rather difficult to answer the question of which ethnic group one belongs to. It also is sometimes politically sensitive. 4) Even though language group and ethnic group are not identical, knowing about the languages involved can be a key to the understanding of ethnic groups. The ethnolinguistic data presented here is based on The Ethnolinguistic Map of Thailand I research project conducted by Suwilai and others at Mahidol University.

This results in a gap among communities, with the underdeveloped ones being considered lagging behind. The lifestyles of different Thai communities are already known to have derived from different historical backgrounds. This is because of the various historical events and evolution of different localities. In the past, the nation was formed by a united state power that governed all the towns, each of which had its own ruler, or governor, who reported to the capital. Such a governing system resulted in a great variety of ruling patterns in each region and locality. For instance, the lifestyles of the northeastern people in the past, before the Laan Chang kingdom, were derived from pre-historical inhabitants. Cultural characteristics from Jen-la, Tawarawadee, and Khmer had influenced their ways of life.

LANGUAGE ECOLOGY AND LANGUAGE PLANNING IN CHIANG RAI PROVINCE, THAILAND Simmee Oupra B.A. (English) Chiang Mai University, Thailand M.Ed. (TEFL) Chiang Mai University, Thailand Dip. (Research in Education) Edith Cowan University, Australia Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy In Linguistics Department of Linguistics Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences University of Adelaide, Australia January, 2009 CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION 1.0 Introduction This chapter describes the significance of the study. The chapter also outlines the aims of the study, followed by research questions, choice of the research methodology, organization of the research report, and limitation of the study. 1.1 Significance of the study Language death causes great loss to the world’s traditional knowledge, biodiversity and linguistic diversity. The causes of the loss are largely the results of economic development, political pressure, educational reforms and other forms of development (Crystal, 1997; Fishman, 1996; Lasimbang, Miller, & Otigil, 1992; Luengthongkam, 2002; Maffi, 2001a, 2001b; Nimmanhemin, 2004b). Being fully aware of the language loss problem, linguists played an important role in tackling it and employed methods based on the predominating theoretical linguistics. There have been a number of efforts, studies and research aiming to help prevent languages from dying out by recording them but languages are still dying at an alarming rate. The chilling fact is that by the end of this century 90 percent of the existing languages will disappear and Asia alone accounts for 32 percent (Ethnologue, 2004a; Maffi2004a; Matisoff, 1989). A few studies have noted that most of the languages used in this area are spoken and not written, and are passed on through oral traditions.
