Issue No. 1—2012/2013 F R O M T H E C H A I R M A N Dear Colleagues and Friends in FOBISSEA Schools, Welcome to the latest edition of the FOBISSEAN newsletter which is published three times per year. After six years holding the posts of Secretary, 1 st Vice Chair and for the last two years as Chairman, Mike Walton has recently stepped down from the Executive Committee. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mike for the commitment, time and energy he has given to the Federation. Mike’s thoughtful, intelligent and inclusive leadership has taken the Federation significantly forward as it seeks to modernise, grow and be- come a more influential educational voice for the region. Mike will remain a member Head of FOBISSEA and we look forward to seeing him again at future business meetings and conferences I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome Matthew Farthing as the new 1 st Vice Chair, Matt Mills as the Secretary and Gary Benfield as the new co-opted member for Professional Standards. They have all recently joined Peter Derby-Crook (2 nd Vice Chair), Val Thomas-Peter (Treasurer), John Jones (Co-opted member for Events) and myself on the Executive Committee of seven Heads. As you read through this newsletter you will get a real flavour for the vibrant and exciting educational op- portunities offered by FOBISSEA to the leaders, teachers and students in its schools. I have taken over the chairmanship of the Federation at a time of significant change and development. The challenge is to main- tain quality in all that we do as we continue to grow and expand. In the last edition of this newsletter we announced the first batch of 28 Affiliate Members to FOBISSEA. I am delighted that a further 20 educational organisations and suppliers have also been approved as Affili- ate Members since then and we extend a very warm welcome to them. Their details are included later in this newsletter. There is a lot going on and much to be excited about. However, I hope that students, staff and members of all of our school communities have an opportunity to rest over the Christmas break. The conference gathers together Heads of Schools and Senior Managers from around the region for educational discussion and debate, the exchange of good ideas and the sharing of best practices. This year the conference was organised in conjunction with EARCOS (East Asian Regional Council of Overseas Schools) in order to widen the range of pro- fessional development opportunities available for delegates. A total of 93 delegates from 37 FOBISSEA schools participated in this event supported by a further 31 exhibitors from educational organisations and suppliers. In addition to the Leadership Conference a Head’s Business Meeting and the FOBISSEA AGM were also held. The conference, which was extended by a half-day this year, offered a well balanced mix of keynotes speeches and morning discussion session. Thought provoking keynotes included a session on Safe- guarding, Business Continuity Planning and Change Leadership. It’s more important than ever to ensure that as Business Managers, we get the opportunity to network and share ideas and initiatives with other colleagues. The FOBISSEA Business Managers confer- ence provides this platform. Many issues have been discussed through email contact since the conference and it’s great to see the networking circle increasing. In September 2013, the conference will move to The Regents School, Pattaya where participants are confident that the conference will continue to grow from strength to strength. Lorna Wilson, Director of Business Administration (Dulwich College Suzhou) U15 A2 FOBISSEA Games 4 th - 6 th November 2012 Hosted by Dulwich College Shanghai In early November, Dulwich College Shanghai hosted the U15 A2 FOBISSEA Games. Six schools competed in the usual sports of swimming, athletics, basketball and football. It was a cold experience for BISV, BSM and JIS arriving from the Tropics, but at least the sun shone on us every day. The games were conducted in the spirit that embodies the FOBISSEA movement and it was pleas- ing to see such good competition, sportsmanship, friendship and fun from all competitors and coaches. We welcomed in The British International School Shanghai, Puxi to the federation, and it was great to see their boys win the basketball. The British International School, Ho Chi Minh City went with a well deserved win in the girls football. Dulwich College Shanghai won the remaining four events, but with all six schools sharing in very close competition with one another, and events going down to penalties, split seconds and centimeters. We look forward to seeing each other again at the U13 Games at Jerudong International School, Brunei in March. F O B I S S E A E V E N T S The British International School, HCMC had the honour of hosting the prestigious annual FOBIS- SEA Music Festival on 8 – 13 November 2012. There were 15 participating schools from around the region involving a total of 290 students and staff. The four days proved to be long and busy days, jam packed with rehearsals, workshops and ac- tivities. During the festival students were assigned to one major ensemble, either Festival Choir or Festival Orchestra and then filtered into smaller minor ensembles such as; Flute Choir, Clarinet Choir, Junior Girls’ Choir, Senior Girls’ Choir, Male Vocal Group, Senior or Junior Strings, Jazz Band and Percussion Ensemble. Students also participated in a variety of different workshops. Some of the workshops students were involved in, were African Drumming, iPad Orchestra, Folk Music, Country Dancing and New Orleans Band. Every evening the students either participated or observed an informal concert. On the first eve- ning, the school groups gathered together for the participating schools concert. Each school per- formed a piece of some variety and the concert had a fantastic atmosphere, with students relaxed and supportive of everyone’s performances. Performances varied from human drum kits and solo classical pianists, to combined choir and band performances from some of the larger schools. On the Saturday evening we invited a Vietnamese traditional ensemble to perform to the students and on the final evening the students and staff enjoyed a Rock Band night. The Gala Concert was a huge success, with 20 high quality pieces performed from 4 days of re- hearsals. The repertoire was varied and exciting with performances of Mozarts ‘Lacrimosa’, Eric Whitacre’s ‘Seal Lullaby’, Respighi’s ‘Pines of Rome’ and ‘Thriller/Heads Will Roll’. The concert was a testament to all of the student’s hard work; it was a truly wonderful musical experience, which all the students and staff were excited to be part of. Sarah James: Festival Director F O B I S S E A E V E N T S The Regent’s School Pattaya hosts the U15 FOBISSEA Games 16 th –18 th November 2012 saw The Regent’s School Pattaya, Thai- land, buzzing with activity as they played host to schools from all over Asia for the U15 FOBISSEA Games. Six schools competed – The Regent’s School Pattaya, ELC International School Malaysia, Harrow International School Beijing, Seoul Foreign School, The British School of Guangzhou and Kolej Tuanku Ja’afar. The games com- menced with swim- ming on the Friday morning with 49 heats, in which Seoul Foreign School came out victorious. After lunch the teams made their way to Rayong Athletics Sta- dium where the weather was on their side as they managed to escape the rain and get on with the track and field events. Here, Regents Pattaya came out on top. Eager to get back into the games, the weekend saw students compete in football and basketball matches that demonstrated just how much hard work pays off; predominantly so for Regents Pat- taya. The girls won both their Saturday football and their Sunday basketball tournaments. Regents Pattaya boys missed out only slightly as they walked away with gold after their basketball tourna- ment on the Saturday, but lost out to ELC International School in the intense final, where the victory was taken after extra time.
