UPDATE FROM THE FOBISIA EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Dear Member,

This academic year, the Games and Music events continued to successfully involve our students with competition and learning respectively outside of the school curriculum. Many other events as well have allowed our students to compete without the travel, such as the FOBISIA Short Story Competition and the DT Challenge. These online events started off very well and will no doubt continue to grow from strength to strength.

The calendar for CPD next academic year has been finalised and promises to provide another year of excellent opportunities for our staff. The CPD Executive have worked very hard to ensure that JAWS and CPD Conferences have been set in place before most schools had finished for the summer. The Executive have utilised technology too by holding regular meetings via Skype. The Committee members at the time were based from Beijing to Brunei and Skype Group Chat has been highly beneficial.

What’s new next year? Once again, with the utilisation of technology we have additional competitions starting where the students will not have to travel and can enter online. in Hong Kong will host the inaugural MFL Competition, will be hosting the inaugural Digital Coding Competition and the British International School Ho Chi Minh City will host the inaugural IB Enterprise Challenge. We look forward to seeing these new initiatives that will give more of our students the opportunity to be involved in FOBISIA events.

From the FOBISIA office we look forward to launching in the new academic year the re-vamped FOBISIA website. The website is through Finalsite, a company renowned for building school websites. It promises to bring the look and usability that is now common place amongst most of our membership’s school websites.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all staff within FOBISIA schools, their time and dedication to supporting events that enrich our students’ education. I would also like to say a big thank you to Gurmeet Kaur (FOBISIA Administrator) for her commitment to supporting us all. A fond farewell and thank you too to Julia Cope (FOBISIA CPD Coordinator) who’s family will start a new adventure in Seoul.

Enjoy your holiday wherever you may go, and see you back in Asia for the new academic year.

Best wishes,

Tania Donoghue CPD Executive Meeting via Skype. From left Mr Mick Farley (CPD Heads' Liaison and Head of Harrow International School Bangkok), Tania Donoghue & Mr. David Lousley (CPD Executive Member, Shrewsbury Executive Officer International School Bangkok.)

22—24 January 2014, Hosted by Jerudong International School, Brunei “Goodbye Delegates” by Megan Domas, Secretary-General of FOBISIA MUN 2014.

It is amazing to think that the time has flown by so quickly and that the conference is drawing to such a rapid but grand close. After so many months of preparation, the hours have just sped by filled with heated debate, excellent discussions, occasional insults and a lot, a lot of laughs. As part of the organizing team, I can confirm that there is only so much one can do to prepare for a conference. Ultimately, the biggest role in the success of a conference is the delegates, who act as both participants and judges. I was duly impressed and astounded by the quality of debate in all the committees, a product of exceptional research and passionate eagerness. I have to also commend the excellent work and dedication of each of the President and Deputy President Chairs in controlling the flow of debate with the right amount of professionalism and humour to make the committee rooms lively, entertaining and full of amusing surprises.

As an observer, I was quickly caught up with the debate and it was a constant struggle to remember to fill out my duties instead of being distracted by the intense discussions. Above all, I would like to express my wonder and gratification to all those numerous delegates who managed to step out of their comfort zone and in the process achieved more than they expected. The only disappointment that I have is that the conference occurred so quickly; looking back, the only change I would make to the organization of this conference would be to make the whole event much longer. Thank you once again to everybody, those who helped me in the running of the conference, the Directors, the student officers, the delegates, the admin staff, social staff, media staff and everybody else who have made this FOBISIA MUN 2014 conference an unforgettable experience.

I am honoured to have served as your Secretary-General and I hope that I will meet all of you again one day in the future.

THE FOBISIAN DATO PADUKA TIMOTHY ONG: BHAG

The esteemed and respected Y. Bhg. Dato Paduka Timothy Ong, founder and convener of the ASEAN 100 th Leadership Forum as well and acting chairman of the Brunei Economic Development Board, delivered a motivating and inspiring speech to the delegates offering valuable advice. He placed particular emphasis on the idea of having a ‘Big Hairy Audacious Goal’ (BHAG) and how it can be used to our advantage in affecting the future. As the weather throughout the morning seemed infinitely dreary and dull, it proved to be refreshing advice for the audience as his thought-provoking speech lifted the delegates’ mood amidst incessant rain and grey clouds.

Mr. Ong regards the MUN as a highly beneficial programme for young students and described it as being “an excellent opportunity that allows you to ask bigger questions on topics like poverty”; ar- guably the most important global issue today. He also believes that “it allows you to think imaginatively about the future” which in- spires our delegates to develop ambitions or even BHAG’s that work towards resolving global matters.

When asked about skills gained by taking part in MUN, he argued that “your ability to communicate clearly” and “speak on your feet” are the most important skills to obtain during the conference and utilise throughout your life. Delegates may also agree that it is the most challenging aspect of MUN.

During his talk, he also mentioned a number of books which he recommended to broaden the delegates’ global awareness of issues related to poverty. These were ‘The End of Poverty’ by Jeffrey Sachs and ‘Dead Aid’ by Dambisa Moyo as they “represent such different view points” and allow us “to look at things critically and have [our] own opinions.”

Furthermore, he emphasised the importance of global awareness and he feels it is important because “we live in an interconnected world” where an event that occurs in a certain place could affect multiple other countries, as well as the number of global issues such as terrorism and disease which affect every- one.

Lastly, as the MUN truly inspires and encourages admirable qualities in dele- gates, Mr Ong believes that they genuinely have the power to change the future of the world we live in. He stated that “the only problem is that some of us have forgotten that we can” but we’re sure that the delegates of this conference will not allow that to happen. FOBISIA DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY CHALLENGE This year has seen the successful introduction of the FOBISIA Design and Technology Creating Solutions Challenge. Due to the nature of Design and Technology and the difficulties associated with travelling and the large groups occupying different schools workshop facilities, the competition was based around posting challenges online that allowed students a week to research, design, manufacture and test their solutions within their own schools using the facilities and materials they are comfortable with. In order to make this a competition, students then had to submit a 5minute video clip highlighting the processes they had gone through in solving the posted challenge, along with how successful they had been.

A judging panel then viewed the video clips before selecting a winner. During the year 4 challenges have been under- taken, involving 7 schools, over 150 students across KS3-KS5 with fantastic results.

Congratulations must go to the following school winners:

Challenge 1 – Roll-a-Ball – Bangkok Patana School – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=469Ei6gKNxg

Challenge 2 – Water Rockets - Bangkok Patana School – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EbuMVm8zrQ

Challenge 3 – Cardboard Chairs – British International School HCMC - http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=rXLna1aNQrU

Challenge 4 – Green Transport - Bangkok Patana School- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnm2-eeLtXI

If other FOBISIA schools are interested in participating next year, please contact Mr Chandler at [email protected] . Although a Design and Technology competition, schools without Design and Technology facilities are still welcome to enter.

THE GREEN WAVE EXPERIENCE - The International School of Brunei

On the 22 nd May 2014, we went to Berakas Recreational Forest Reserve as it was International Forest Day in Support of The Green Wave .

The Green Wave is a global biodiver- sity campaign to educate children and youth about biodiversity. Each year The Green Wave will contribute to worldwide celebrations of the inter- national day for biological diversity (IDB) . It also supports other Na- tional, International and global tree planting initiative such as UNEP-led Billion Tree Campaign . The key mes- sages of the campaign are: children and youth around the world want a healthy, bio diverse future.

Secondly, children and youth around the world will unite and take action for biodiversity. Thirdly, children and youth are working towards the 2020 Aichi biodiversity target of reducing biodiversity loss. When we first arrived, all participants from the other schools were standing in a circle being lectured about The Green Wave . We joined them and were immediately given a quiz sheet about different types of trees. 3 local Bruneian schools were invited. To help, all participants were assigned to plant a tree, more if possible. All trees had to be planted specifically at 10am sharp. The trees that were planted would also be indigenous.

Overall, the experience was fun and educational. We learnt a lot about the different types of trees and how to plant a tree. Before leaving, we were generously given food and drinks. It was an enjoyable day and we would love to do this again!

FOBISIA U13 GAMES COME TO BRUNEI

Sport has always been an important part of The International School of Brunei (ISB). As a school, ISB has travelled near and far to countries such as , Korea, Vietnam and Thailand to take part in the annual Federation of British In- ternational Schools in Asia (FOBISIA) Games. From the gruelling selection process, through the intensive training to the arrival of the Games themselves, it has always been an exciting and rewarding part of ISB for both the students and the school as a whole. This year, ISB hosted the U13 Games from the 3rd to the 5th of April 2014.

An insight into this fabulous weekend: The weekend of Fobisia has probably been the toughest yet most rewarding and fun of my life so far. The Athletics competition was really tough as we were competing against some strong teams from across Asia who train for months and months both in school and outside to compete at these games. However, ISB did themselves proud and showed what they are made of coming away with a number of medals but most of all the knowledge that we competed and enjoyed every minute. Highlights were watching my friends win medals and push themselves further than they thought possible. Alexis and Maddie flew the flag for the girls winning medals on the track at a number of distances. The boys did well too with Shawn winning medals in both track and field and Iwan on the track.

Basketball was an exciting competition too. Although ISB took a little while to warm up, once we did there was no stop- ping us as basket after basket went in. Again the games were really physical for both the boys and girls but ISB stood strong and only narrowly missed out on the play offs.

However, friendships were made and much fun was had - after all, it is called the 'Friendly Games'.

An incredible weekend with many highlights!

Page 7 THE FOBISIAN FOBISIA SHORT STORY COMPETITION 2014

Bangkok Patana School was very proud to play host to the 2014 FOBISIA Short Story Competition. The theme for this year was ‘Magic?’ Students were allowed to interpret this ambiguous prompt in any way they chose – the result was an extremely diverse range of narratives that showed creativity, wit, flair and imagination.

Every school that entered the competition had to select only one story for Primary and one for Secondary. This meant that every submission to FOBISIA was an individual winner for that school. Congratulations to all finalists throughout the region!

There were outstanding contributions from many FOBISIA schools and the daunting responsibility for choosing overall winners went to our VIP, award winning children’s author Linda Newbery.

Linda was highly impressed by all the entries and her feedback should be an inspiration to all the budding young authors out there! First prize in Primary went to Jasper Meckel, from Alice Smith Primary School in Kuala Lumpur, for The Reflection of a Lifetime , the fantastical story of a father’s desperate ploy to find his missing son. There were two runners up, Kai Mit- suishi from Bangkok Patana for The Living Dead Warrior , a formative episode in the early life of Julius Caesar and Kristen Li from for The Chess Adventure .

For Secondary entries Linda Newbery stated that ‘this was VERY difficult to judge, as I felt that all the shortlisted stories were worthy of winning the prize. Well done to those who reached the final selection in a competition in which the standard was so high. I had the enviable but difficult task of choosing from six stories, each by a writer of great promise. For the winner, I’ve chosen ‘Dyslexia’, by James Bruce of . James has used various typographical tricks to show the difficulty his character has with the written world, and although this must have taken considerable effort, it’s more than a gimmick – it puts us, the reader, into the position of his narrator, faced with the printed word.’

The Secondary School Runners up were Miu Miu Chanya Leosivikul from Shrewsbury School for Listen and Rahmah Amal Mackie from Jerudong International School for 29th of February 2016 . The other short-listed entries were:

Primary School • Laura Noble, elc International School • Aaron Vanzyl, Bangkok International Preparatory and Secondary School • Harriet Clowes, British International School Phuket • Lucas Seaborn,

Secondary School • Audrey Teo, • Megan Heather-Maher, Bangkok Patana School • Maisie Proctor, St. Andrew’s International School, Bangkok By Keri Grimwood, Sally Flint and Grant Robertson, FOBISIA Short Story Coordinators, Bangkok Patana School

THE FOBISIAN FOBISIA U15 GROUP C GAMES AT THE BRITISH SCHOOL KATHMANDU

28 th -30 th November 2013 saw The British School in Kathmandu Nepal host it’s first ever group C FOBISIA games. Nepal has very limited facilities and ongoing political instability so was never able to host a games. Even this time we were very nervous about the possibility of Nepal’s elections resulting in disruption that may affect the programme. Fortunately everything passed off without a hitch!

Four FOBISIA schools and two local schools took part. St. Andrew Rayong Green Valley (StAGV), Kinabalu International School (KIS) and St. Stephens Bangkok (SIS) arrived in Kathmandu on Wednesday 27 th . The Games kicked off with the football competition. The travelling Schools were joined by the hosts The British School (TBS), Lincoln School (LS) and Kathmandu International Study Centre (KISC). LS won the boys football and SIS the girls.

Friday 29 th saw the hosts taking the athletic team trophy, StAGV 2 nd and LS marginally taking 3 rd over KIS. The afternoon saw, a non-traditional game in terms of FOBISIA. Rounders was played instead of swimming, which is not possible in Kathmandu in November (it is too cold and there are only outside, unheated pools!).

There were a lot of questions about the rules but all athletes had an enjoyable time in the end with the combined team of TBS/ KISC winning the rounders.

Saturday 30 th was basketball with some great games contested in the boy’s competition with St. Andrews International School Green Valley, Thailand taking first place despite a slow start. A lot of determination in the girl’s games with not much between all teams, St. Stephens Bangkok winning the gold in the end.

Thank you to all the travelling schools who took the brave leap to come to the Himalayas, the Kathmandu schools for participating and providing their basketball facility and also to all the sponsors who made these Games possible.

FOBISIA U13 GROUP B1 GAMES Discovery Bay International School, Hong Kong (DBIS) recently hosted the FOBISIA (Federation of British International Schools in Asia) B1 Primary Games from 18—20 March 2014, generously sponsored by Standard Chartered Bank. The participating schools with a total of nearly 300 students, and close to a similar number of parents, were from Kellett School, , Harrow Beijing, The British School Guangzhou, Seoul Foreign British School, The British School of Beijing and Dulwich College Suzhou.

The results throughout the Games were the best ever achieved by any of the DBIS teams at a FOBISIA Games. On day one they were placed first in athletics and first in swimming, on day two, four of their six football teams made the finals for gold and silver and on day three, the DBIS Under 11's team reached one of the three T Ball finals and went on to win gold. On the last night everyone attended a Gala Dinner in Auberge Hotel and DBIS were presented as the overall winners of the competition.

The feelings from so many of the visit- ing parents and coaches were summed up in the following comment by a parent visiting from Taipei who had experienced seven FOBISIA Games with her children:

‘One of the best FOBISIA Games – thank you. The weather was tough but all of the students were tougher – they sparkled with determination and fun.

We all had just the best time – thank you Discovery Bay - and what a great place to live and have a school!’

From 19th to 21st June, the Alice Smith School proudly hosted the 2014 Primary FOBISIA Games. Congratulations to all the amazing children who competed in a very successful event. Participating schools were Garden International School KL; Harrow Inter- national School, Bangkok; Bangkok Patana; International School of Jakarta; Tanglin Trust School, Singapore and of course, the Alice Smith School.

The Primary FOBISIA Games offers a fantastic opportunity for the children to compete at a high level of sports, make new friends, and understand the importance of teamwork when representing their respective schools. The organisation of the Games was excellent. All competition days ran smoothly, with a healthy competitive edge giving rise to new friendships being made. Hosting an event of this magnitude is a massive undertak- ing. The success of this wonderful event would not have been possible without the support from the Monaghan family, Ben Line Agencies, Transport Events Management Ltd, Big Dutch- man, Coca Cola and a team of dedicated coaches, staff and students plus the support from the parent body.

At the end of the three days, everyone was exhausted but had a good time.

“You guys have done an incredible job hosting this year. The time, care and energy you have put in have provided out- standing opportunities for so many children. Everyone at Gar- den really appreciates your hard work and our children have amazing memories which I'm sure will last a lifetime!” - Ian Deeth, Head of Primary PE, Garden International School.

“Just a quick note to thank and congratulate everyone who were involved in organising and executing a truly fantastic, exciting, memorable and wonderful FOBISIA 2014. I know you have been working for months on this and I must say I did not see a single flaw in the organisation and the execution. The competition was excellent and the enthusiasm from all chil- dren, coaches and supporters was a pleasure to see.” - Alice Smith School Year 5 Parent. “I thought the day went extremely well, so congratulations to all the KLASS team for putting on such a great day.” - Tim Lamb Head of Juniors, St. Christopher's International Primary School, Penang and guest at the Games.

elc INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL HOSTS THE FOBISIA PRIMARY GROUP B2 GAMES

The FOBISIA Primary Group B2 Games 2014 were hosted by elc International School, Malaysia at its Campus from June 5 th to June 9 th 2014.

With schools from Thailand, Brunei and Malaysia the turn-out of spectators was exceptionally good. What followed was 3 sun drenched days of 316 participants and coaches and between 260 and 300 spectators on any given day being passionately involved in the days’ activities.

The Games began with Swimming and Football followed by Tee-Ball on the second day with Athletics rounding off the 3 day sporting event. While dubbed “The Friendly Games”, all the schools showed plenty of competitive spirit.

Moving away from the traditional opening dinner on the first night, elc decided instead to host a BBQ at its Cyberjaya Campus, opening up the invitation to the parents and supporters. What a crowd turned up! The BBQ hosted around 550 guests made up of the various school teams, parents and supporters.

Thank you to all the schools and their students for participat- ing and making the 3 day event such a success. Keep training, stay focused, remain and maintain true sportsmanship values until we meet next time…

INTERNATIONAL SPORTS CHAMPIONS AT BANGKOK PATANA SCHOOL

Bangkok Patana School congratulates Head Tennis Coach Daniel Ahl for his Bronze Medal in the ITF World Team Championships in Florida, USA, and Primary PE Teacher Lyndsey Fraser for qualifying for the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship.

Having represented Great Britain in Tennis at the Under 18 level, England at Open level and recently in the over 35 and over 40 teams, Dan said it was still a very proud moment being selected for this year's Over 45 team to compete in the World Team Championships.

Coach Dan played in a four man team with each match having two singles matches and one doubles. Twenty four teams had entered and his team was drawn in a group with Mexico and Kazakhstan both of whom they beat comfortably 3-0 to progress to the last eight where they faced Chile. With the event being played on clay, Coach Dan said they knew it would be tough and so it proved with team GB edging the match 2-1 and winning the deciding doubles in three sets.

They then played long-time rivals France in the semi-finals, who once again proved too strong winning both singles in straight sets leaving Team GB in a bronze medal play off with Germany. Daniel’s team captain put us one match up in the play off before he took on their number 1 player. Although Daniel won the first set 7-6, he could not quite finish his opponent off losing in a three and a half hour match (6-7, 6-4, 6-4) to leave the doubles as the decider. Luck- ily the GB doubles team were in fine form and won in straight sets to claim third place.

“For us as a team to finish third in the World Championships was an ex- cellent result and something we were all thrilled with,” said Dan.

LYNDSEY FRASER- IRONMAN 70.3 Champion

Primary PE Teacher Lyndsey Fraser is rightly proud of her performance at the IRONMAN 70.3 in Putrajaya, Malaysia. The competition distance was a 1.9km swim, a 90km bike and a 21.1km run. The event was particularly difficult due to the heat which meant that after the swim and bike ride, the athletes were running in 40 degrees Celsius.

Lyndsey’s finishing time was 5 hours 01min (although the finisher photo says 5:27, the athletes were released in waves), which put her as first in her age group category and the second female overall. The win in her category meant that she has now qualified to compete in the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships in Mont Tremblant, Canada, which will take place in September 2014.

FOBISIA HEADS’ & SENIOR LEADERS’ CONFERENCE 2014 Bangkok Patana School, Bangkok, Thailand Friday 7 th November – Monday 10 th November 2014

26 May 2014

Dear Colleagues,

We are all excited to be hosting this year’s FOBISIA Heads’ and Senior Leaders’ Conference in the Kingdom of Thailand. The country has recently experienced significant political upheaval as the country seeks major electoral reforms. As I write to you the country is being governed by the National Council for Peace and Order, however in many terms life goes on as normal for most Thais, expatriate workers and visitors. Can I guarantee this political situation is going to be resolved by November’s conference date? Absolutely not! But I can say to you that this has been going on for well over a year now and we have had minimal disruption to the school programme, with only one day’s closure during this time. So it is full steam ahead for this year’s FOBISIA Heads’ and Senior Leaders’ Conference!

You will notice that this year’s FOBISIA Heads’ and Senior Leaders’ Conference is following the FOBISIA Business Meet- ing format as we are holding all of the meetings at the host school. As Bangkok Patana School is one of the largest schools in Asia, we have the space and facilities to cater and support a large professional conference. As a school head, I also think it is important to keep the focus in schools rather than hotels, that don’t have the student learning heart- beat. Speaking of students, you will see lots of students at the conference, leading tours, introducing key notes, or just helping you get to your next destination.

So in conclusion, at this year’s FOBISIA Heads’ and Senior Leaders’ Conference in Bangkok, things will be a little differ- ent as we share top quality professional development opportunities, meet colleagues over sumptuous meals, take in a free foot massage and be entertained by student performers whilst experiencing this year’s overarching Leadership Conference theme, ‘Thinking Outside the Box’.

Accommodation We have negotiated a special rate at the 5-star Banyan Tree Bangkok Hotel for the conference delegates http:// www.banyantree.com/en/bangkok/ . This offer will only be available to us until 30th June 2014. All daily rates are in Thai Baht.

Room categories Rates Deluxe Room - Single Thai Baht 4,300++ (approx. US$ 131++) Deluxe Room - Double Thai Baht 4,800++ (approx. US$ 146++) Banyan Tree Club Room - Single/Double Thai Baht 5,500++ (approx. US$ 167++) One Bedroom Suite – Single/Double Thai Baht 6,200++ (approx. US$ 180++)

The above room rates are quoted on a per room, per night basis inclusive of • Breakfast • 24 hours in-room internet access

Page 15 THE FOBISIAN

All schools are to make their own accommodation booking by completing the hotel reservation form in Appendix 1 and emailing it to: [email protected]

The hotel needs confirmation of your bookings as they are holding over 140 rooms for our conference. If you are un- sure who will be attending along with yourself, please indicate a name of any senior leader when making the booking. The names can be changed at a later date.

Can you get your PA/Administration to confirm your room bookings as soon as possible as the hotel wants to secure the rooms for us due to additional demand from potential other guests? This will be much appreciated. The bookings can be made via this email [email protected] and [email protected] .

Business Meeting We will have our Business Meeting on Monday 10 th November to allow for, and not to compromise, a focus on profes- sional development for ourselves and our Senior Leaders during the Conference on Saturday 8 th and Sunday 9 th Novem- ber.

Registration I attach the registration form for you to complete and confirm your attendance and participation. Details of how to make payment for the Conference Fee (US$650) is included in the registration form. Please ensure you pay all the bank charges for any transfers (on both ends). If you are uncertain whom will be attending indicate A.N. OTHER (1/2) on the registration form. There is also a section to indicate if your spouse will accompanying you (and the associated costs).

We need confirmation of who is attending from your school by Monday 30 th June 2014. Therefore please complete the Registration Form – Appendix 2 and email it to [email protected] .
