The journey of 60 years has been eventful, progressive and impactful in many ways. In 2018 the Malaysian English Language Teaching Association (MELTA) continued to undertake a wide range of activities supported by its vision and mission to be the leading Malaysian non-governmental education professional organisation. Based on a strategic plan to provide a comprehensive set of activities that benefit practicing teachers, academics, students, parents and corporate organisations, MELTA achievements in 2018 is remarkable in many ways. Broadly, these activities can be classified into the following categories; Academic and professional development conferences Research and development conventions Academic Journals and publications Workshops and seminars for teachers PROFESSOR DR. GANAKUMARAN Workshops and activities for students SUBRAMANIAM Corporate training programmes MELTA, President Social responsibility activities Recognition and commendation awards Teacher recognition awards Student focused events MELTA Chapters and outreach activities International and national partnerships Collaborative events with partners 5 the MELTA Malachi Edwin Creative Teacher Showcase Awards, and the MELTA Creative Student Teacher Showcase Awards, the Creative Higher Education Teaching Award and the MELTA President’s Award. In 2013, MELTA launched a major national award called the Raja Zarith Sofiah Award for CSR in English language Education. This award is given to non-education corporate organizations that have made outstanding contributions to the field of English language education in Malaysia. In 2018, the award was won by M-Suites Hotel, Johor. On the scholastic front we continue to publish two journals and a few academic publications– The English Teacher and The Malaysian Journal of ELT Research, the MELTA ELT Series, the MELTA-USM ELT in Southeast Asia series and the MELTA Annual. However, in 2018 MELTA published a commemorative issue called The MELTA Story, which tries to capture some of our 60 year story. One of the highlights of 2018 is the emergence of MELTA Chapters across many states in Malaysia including; Penang, Perak, Kuala Lumpur, Melaka, Johor, Terengganu, Kelantan, Sabah an d Sarawak. The above activities are examples of how MELTA continued to build on the strategies and plans enacted by the 2018-2020 MELTA committees. The report that follows this introduction will highlight the range of achievements made by the Association as a w hole and in particularly, by the various Bureaus of the Association. 2019 promises to be another eventful year for MELTA, as the Bureaus have in the pipeline many activities and events. We are ex tremely excited about hosting the 28th MELTA International Conference in Kuching, Sarawak from 13-15 August 2019. We invite you not only to keep connected to MELTA but to come forward to initiate and support even more relevant activities for the ELE community. 6 INTERNATIONAL AND NATIONAL PARTNERSHIP INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS MELTA currently has MOUs with 13 associate partners, made up of ELT organisations in several countries. They are as follows: Thai TESOL, Thailand KOTESOL, Korea KATE, Korea JALT, Japan JACET, Japan TEFLIN, Indonesia HAAL, Hong Kong ETA, ROC, Taiwan BELTA, Brunei IFT, Sri Lanka BELTA, Bangladesh ELTAI, India ELTAM, Mongolia However, MELTA did not renew the MOU for 3 of the associate partners namely LIA, Indonesia, PALT, Philippines and SLETA, Sri Lanka because these associations have not extended invitations to MELTA over several years. Since January 2018, MELTA has begun the process of renewing the MOUs that has expired and signed a new MOU with the following ELT organisations: 1. International Teachers’ Forum Sri Lanka (IFT) 2. English Language Teachers’ Association of Mongolia TESOL (ELTAM) 3. English Language Teachers’ Association of India (ELTAI) As part of the MOUs, MELTA sends its members to conferences/seminars/workshops organised by the associate partners. To qualify for this grant, members can visit our website. Successful applicant will represent MELTA and will be provided with accommodation for the duration of the conference, a confirmed presentation slot as well as a fee waiver. MOSES SAMUEL ( organized by HAAL) 12 ELTAI, India 13 IFT, Sri lanka Representation begins in 2019 14 ELTAM, Mongolia MELTA requires members who are interested to represent us at our associate partner conferences to submit an application form. Selection is based on the following criteria: possess an active 5-year MELTA membership, with priority given to life members submit a full paper to the MELTA committee for review and with the aim of having the paper published in one of the two MELTA journals or the MELTA Annual. 8 Moving Forward For International Partnerships, the following aspects were decided for the coming years. Develop a KPI for strong and sustainable partnership development Develop a strategy for collaboration with international partners Set strategies and targets for new partnerships Develop a clear and strategic communication plan for engagement with partners 9 NATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS Being an NGO, MELTA traditionally collaborates with public and private organisations in general and specific areas in English Language Education with the aim of realizing its vision in elevating the standard of teaching and learning the English language. Various partnership and joint programmes and projects have been successfully conducted with these organisations. New and upcoming programmes and projects are being negotiated for the benefits of learners, teachers and practitioners in the field of English Language Education.
