Dissenters' Schools, 1660-1820. HE contributions of nonconformity to education have seldom been recognized. Even historians of dissent T have rarely done more than mention the academies, and speak of them as though they existed chiefly to train ministers, which was but a very; small part o:f their function, almost incidental. Tbis side of the work, the tecbnical, has again been emphasized lately by Dr. Shaw in the " Cambridge History of Modern Literature," and by Miss Parker in her " Dissenting Academies in England ": it needs tberefore no further mention. A 'brief study of the wider contribution of dissent, charity schools, clay schools, boarding schools, has been laid before the members of our Society. An imperfect skeleton, naming and dating some of the schoolmasters, may be pieced together here. It makes no 'P'r·et·ence to be exhaustive; but it deliberately: excludes tutors who were entirely engaged in the work of pre paring men for the ministry, so as to illustrate the great work clone in general education. It incorporates an analysis of the. I 66 5 returns to the Bishop of Exeter, of IVIurch's history of the Presbyterian and General Baptist Churches in the West, of Nightingale's history of Lancashire Nonconformity (marked N), of Wilson's history of dissenting churches in and near London. The counties of Devon, Lancaste.r, and Middlesex therefore are well represented, and probably an analysis of any county dissenting history would reveal as good work being done in every rplace. A single date marks the closing of the school. Details about many will be found in the Transactions of the Congregational Historical Society, to which references are given. -

The primary argument is that while beliefs about death stemmed from the Reformation tradition, divergent religious reforms of Puritanism and Arminianism did not lead to differing approaches to death. People adapted religious ideas on general terms of Protestant Christianity and not specifically aligned with varying reform movements. This study links apologetics and sermons concerning spiritual death, physical death, and remedies for each to cultural practice through the lens of wills and graves to gauge religious influence. Readers are reminded of the origins of reformed thought, which is what seventeenth-century English theologians built their ideas upon. Religious debates of the day centered on the Puritan and Arminian divide, which contained significantly different ideas of soteriology, a key aspect of a good death in the English ars moriendi. -

Kent Clark California Institute of Technology ABSTRACT This working paper is a draft of the first three chapters of a biography of Thomas, 5th Baron, 1st Earl, and 1st Marquess of Wharton (1648-1715). It traces the development of young Thomas (Tom to his family and eventually to the political world of England) from his birth until his return from France in 1666. The reader may be relieved to know that the formidable array of genealogical notes in Chapter I will eventually be reduced into an appendix on the Wharton family and that the table of abbreviations covers the whole book, not merely the first three chapters. H. Keeble Keeble: Baxter and Orthodoxy 2 /40 1. The ‘Over-Orthodox Doctors’ 'No particular Words in the World are Essentials of our Religion'.2 This startling pronouncement was made by the Puritan divine Richard Baxter during a conference convened in London in late 1654 to define the limits of tolerable religious orthodoxy under the Protectorate. What lay behind these words was a deep-seated suspicion of creedal formulae, confessions and platforms which to Baxter’s mind simply ‘multiply controversies, and fill the minds of men with scruples, and ensnare their consciences, and engage men in parties against each other to the certain breach of Charity’. Since ‘the Christian world will never have Concord, but in a FEW, CERTAIN, NECESSARY things’, to insist on subscription to any form of words is a recipe for divisiveness. ‘The great cause of our uncharitable censures and divisions, hath been our departing from the Antient simplicity of Faith, and also from the sufficiency of the holy Scriptures, to be the Rule and Test of Faith’.3 ‘Did the Primitive church require Subscription to all our 39 Articles?’ he pointedly asked.4 This distrust of credal definitions of orthodoxy was a distinctive feature of Baxter’s inclusive churchmanship. Despite his inveterate disputatiousness and a temperament which could be impatient, irritable and severe, he worked tirelessly throughout his career to counter the ecclesiastical fissiparousness of the seventeenth century. -

Thomas, the eldest son of Eichard and Catherine Goodwin, was born at Eollesby, a village in the eastern part of Norfolk, within a few miles of Yarmouth, on the 5th of October in the year 1600. The long and prosperous reign of Elizabeth was then drawing to its close, and a considerable number of her subjects, especially in the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk, were desirous of obtaining a more complete reformation of the Church than that which had been effected by her father or her brother. They cherished some hope that in the expected reign of a Scottish king, educated under Presbyterian dis- cipline, they would see the English Church brought into closer re- lations and nearer resemblance to the Keformed Churches of Scot- land and the Continent. In these expectations they were bitterly disappointed. The ecclesiastical rule of Elizabeth had been oppres- sive to them, that of the Stuarts became intolerable. James, on his accession, is reported to have said, ' Do I mak the judges ? do I mak the bishops? then I mak the law and the gospel.' The Puri- tans, ill-treated by James's judges and bishops, were not disposed to regard with favour either his ' law ' or his ' gospel.' Thus arose the long conflict between the Stuarts and the Puritans. During the reign of Elizabeth, several things contributed to the prevalence of Puritanism in the eastern counties. Many of the Pro- testants of the Netherlands who were driven from their country by the Duke of Alva settled in the nearest maritime counties of England, and brought their arts and manufactures to the city and neighbour- hood of Norwich."^' Thoroughly imbued with Presbyterian principles, and holding them tenaciously as they had suffered for them severely, they became a source of frequent trouble to the bishops of that dio- cese. -

1 ACADEMICAL LEARNING IN THE DISSENTERS’ PRIVATE ACADEMIES, 1660-1720 A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Mark Burden English Department Queen Mary, University of London 2012 2 Abstract Previous assessments of the early academies of Protestant dissenters in England and Wales (1660-1720) have celebrated their tutors’ achievements in defying the Act of Uniformity and the Test Acts, and have argued that they pioneered a modern curriculum. Despite these views, there has been little scholarly investigation into the academies. This thesis evaluates the available sources for the first time, examining the political, philosophical, and theological controversies in which the academies were involved, as well as examining the lives and careers of their tutors and students in greater detail than has hitherto been possible. The introduction explores the reception of the academies from the late seventeenth century until the present day, exposing the paucity of evidence and the abundance of polemic which have characterised previous accounts. Chapter 1 provides a detailed examination of academies operated by nonconformists prior to the Toleration Act, reassessing the contribution of ejected university tutors, surveying attempted prosecutions, and highlighting political controversies. The second chapter extends the narrative to academies run by Protestant dissenters from the Toleration Act (1689) to the repeal of the Schism Act (1719); it contains the first-ever detailed analysis of the minutes of the London-based denominational Fund Boards, and a survey of the careers of former academy students. Chapter 3 re-evaluates the teaching of philosophy in the dissenters’ earliest academies, using newly-identified manuscript works by tutors and students to explore the study of logic, natural philosophy, and ethics. -

BREMER IT HAS BECOME fashionable for colonial historians to em- phasize the similarities between English and New England societies ofthe seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Scholars such as Timoth H. Breen and David G. Allen have demon- strated the persistence of English communal institutions and values in New World settings.^ Investigators of ideology have shown that much ofthe thought of America's eighteenth-cen- tury revolutionaries was inspired by the English Common- wealth tradition.2 Studies have demonstrated that throughout An earlier version of this paper was delivered to the Columbia University Seminar in Early American Historj'. English Book Owners in the Seventeenth Century a Work in Progress Listing
English book owners in the seventeenth century A work in progress listing How much do we really know about patterns and impacts of book ownership in Britain in the seventeenth century? How well equipped are we to answer questions such as the following?: • What was a typical private library, in terms of size and content, in the seventeenth century? • How does the answer to that question vary according to occupation, social status, etc? • How does the answer vary over time? – how different are ownership patterns in the middle of the century from those of the beginning, and how different are they again at the end? Having sound answers to these questions will contribute significantly to our understanding of print culture and the history of the book more widely during this period. Our current state of knowledge is both imperfect, and fragmented. There is no directory or comprehensive reference source on seventeenth-century British book owners, although there are numerous studies of individual collectors. There are well-known names who are regularly cited in this context – Cotton, Dering, Pepys – and accepted wisdom as to collections which were particularly interesting or outstanding, but there is much in this area that deserves to be challenged. Private Libraries in Renaissance England and Books in Cambridge Inventories have developed a more comprehensive approach to a particular (academic) kind of owner, but they are largely focused on the sixteenth century. Sears Jayne, Library Catalogues of the English Renaissance , extends coverage to 1640, based on book lists found in a variety of manuscript sources. The Cambridge History of Libraries in Britain and Ireland (2006) contains much relevant information in this field, summarising existing scholarship, and references to this have been included in individual entries below where appropriate. -
