Patterns of reproductive-mode evolution in doi:10.1111/zsc.12121 Old World tree frogs (Anura, Rhacophoridae). —Zoologica Scripta, 00, 000–000. The Old World tree frogs (Anura: Rhacophoridae), with 387 species, display a remarkable diversity of reproductive modes – aquatic breeding, terrestrial gel nesting, terrestrial foam nesting and terrestrial direct development. The evolution of these modes has until now remained poorly studied in the context of recent phylogenies for the clade. Here, we use newly obtained DNA sequences from three nuclear and two mitochondrial gene fragments, together with previously published sequence data, to generate a well-resolved phylogeny from which we determine major patterns of reproductive-mode evolution. We show that basal rhacophorids have fully aquatic eggs and larvae. Bayesian ancestral-state reconstruc- tions suggest that terrestrial gel-encapsulated eggs, with early stages of larval development completed within the egg outside of water, are an intermediate stage in the evolution of ter- restrial direct development and foam nesting. The ancestral forms of almost all currently recognized genera (except the fully aquatic basal forms) have a high likelihood of being ter- restrial gel nesters. Direct development and foam nesting each appear to have evolved at least twice within Rhacophoridae, suggesting that reproductive modes are labile and may arise multiple times independently. -

MESSAGE The Kerala State Biodiversity Board in association with the Biodiversity Management Committees - which exist in all Panchayats, Municipalities and Corporations in the State - had conducted a rapid Impact Assessment of floods and landslides on the State’s biodiversity, following the natural disaster of 2018. This assessment has laid the foundation for a recovery and ecosystem based rejuvenation process at the local level. Subsequently, as a follow up, Universities and R&D institutions have conducted 28 studies on areas requiring attention, with an emphasis on riverine rejuvenation. I am happy to note that a compilation of the key outcomes are being published. -

Lavanam: Fighting for Independence as a Boy and Uplifting Tribals as a Man! The late Mr Lavanam was honoured with the Jamnalal Bajaj Award in the category of ‘Constructive Work’. Mr Lavanam was a dynamic social activist. The son of Mrs Gora, who was an atheist and received Gandhiji’s recognition and respect, he was born to Brahmin parentage but married Hemalata, a Dalit girl, at a time when untouchability was highly prevalent. He did not seek a bread-winning job and 2 accepted voluntary poverty along with his parents. Hemlata was also actively involved in the welfare of women and has established and managed schools for underprivileged girls. In the year 2009, the late Mr Lavanam was honoured with the Jamnalal Bajaj Award in the category of ‘Constructive Work’. Mr Lavanam was interested in social work since he was 12. His earliest work was as a young volunteer in the Independence movement, when he acted as a courier, clandestinely passing messages to leaders. Subsequently, he was in Mahatma Gandhiji’s Ashram in Sevagram where he received basic training in Gandhian Philosophy of social work. He later worked with his father – who would conduct night classes in Dalit colonies and also organise social events where “untouchables” and upper caste people dined together. He imbibed the spirit of this kind of Gandhian activism from his father. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Amphibian diversity in the Western Ghats-Sri Lanka biodiversity hotspot is extremely high, especially for such a geo- graphically restricted area. Frogs in particular dominate these assemblages, and the family Rhacophoridae is chief among these, with hundreds of endemic species. These taxa continue to be described at a rapid pace, and several groups have recently been found to represent unique evolutionary clades at the genus level. Here, we report DNA sequences, larval and breeding data for two species of rhacophorid treefrog (Polypedates bijui and a new, hitherto undescribed species). Re- markably, they represent unique, independent clades which form successive sister groups to the Pseudophilautus (Sri Lan- ka) + Raorchestes (India, China & Indochina) clades. Gora joins Ananda College, Colombo as a Lecturer. 1927 Saraswathi joins Gora on September 26, defying the taboo that pregnant women should not see eclipse and views the solar eclipse in Colombo. Saraswathi views lunar eclipse at Vijayanagaram, Andhra Pradesh. September: Gora joins his alma mater P.R. College, Kakinada as Lecturer and Head. Gora removes his so-called sacred thread which is a caste symbol and has differences with his father on this. 1928 Eldest daughter Manorama (b. July 29) without any deformity even after Saraswathi views the eclipse. Gora is ex-communicated from his caste. Saraswathi Gora follows him. -

Myristica swamp tree frog December 17, 2020 In news Recently, the Rare Myristica Swamp Tree frog has been recorded for the first time north of the Shencottah gap in Vazhachal Reserve Forest in Thrissur. About Myristica Swamp Tree frog Myristica Swamp Tree frog is a rare arboreal species endemic to the Western Ghats that bears the scientific name Mercurana myristica palustris The frog was first described in 2013 from the lowland Myristica swamps of Arippa, near Kulathupuzha Reserve Forest, in the western foothills of Agasthyamalai. The current species was spotted by the researchers 170 km north of Arippa. Unlike the Myristica Swamp Treefrog found in the foothills of the Agasthyamalai, these frogs were found to be active throughout June and early July and has adapted to a non-Myristica swamp predominant with the plant Polyalthia fragrans Its Unique breeding behavior According to the researchers, these frogs are rare and elusive for the reason that they are arboreal and active only for a few weeks during their breeding season. During this season, there is a large aggregation of males that descend from the high canopy of the trees. The males vocalise in groups from the low perches in the swamps. They exhibit unique breeding behaviour. The breeding season, unlike for other frogs, starts in the pre-monsoons season (May) and ends before the monsoon becomes fully active in June. Before the end of the breeding season, the female frogs along with their male counterparts descend to the forest floor. The female digs the mud and lays eggs in shallow burrows in mud. -
