Granite (Building Stone) Quarry of M/s INFRA GRANITES LLP at Cherpulassery Village, Ottapalam Taluk & Palakkad District, Kerala. PRE-FEASIBILTY REPORT 1.0 INTRODUCTION OF THE MINING ACTIVITY M. A. Ashraf for M/s Infra Granites LLP, is proposing a (Building Stone) Quarry with Lease at Re Survey No. 81, 82 & 83 of Cherpulassery Village, Ottapalam Taluk, Palakkad District, Kerala for an area of 3.0757 hectares. The proposed quarry area is hill rock. In most parts of the quarry lease area, the rocks are exposed and also the granite (building stone) exposures are present / bordering to the lease boundary proving the occurrence of the granite (building stone). The highest elevation of the lease area is 105m MSL and lowest is 45m MSL. As the proposed area is hillock, the drainage of the lease area is towards east direction. The geological resources of granite (building stone) in m ining lease area are estimated to be 2205770MT. The Blocked Reserves and Mineable Reserve of granite (building stone) in mining lease area are estimated to be 935065MT and 1270705MT respectively. In the first years of plan period, total 1,00,000 Tons of granite (building stone) shall be quarried/mined. The balance mineral reserves and part of blocked resources shall be quarried after modifying the bench design in next five year period. Kerala experiences rainfall on duration of 3 to 4 months in a year and the quarry operations will be affected because of the rainy days. The objective of this study was to evaluate the contribution of the root cohesion of vetiver grass ( Chrysopogon zizanioides (L.) Roberty) on slope stabilization in erosion control along the right margin of the São Francisco river. -

Bronson, Commissioner of Agriculture Erythrina Gall Wasp, Quadrastichus erythrinae Kim, in Florida James Wiley, [email protected], Taxonomic Entomologist, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Divsion of Plant Industry Paul Skelley, [email protected], Taxonomic Entomologist, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Division of Plant Industry INTRODUCTION: Galls of the eulophid erythrina gall wasp, Quadrastichus erythrinae Kim 2004, were first collected in Florida by Edward Putland and Olga Garcia (Florida Department of Agriculture, Division of Plant Industry) on Erythrina variegata L. in Miami-Dade County at the Miami Metro Zoo on October 15, 2006. Erythrina variegata, also known as coral tree, tiger’s claw, Japanese coral tree, Indian coral tree, and wiliwili-haole, is noted for its seasonal showy red flowers and variegated leaves. It is an ornamental landscape tree widely planted in the southern part of the state. Erythrina is a large genus with approximately 110 different species worldwide. In addition to Erythrina variegata, the erythrina gall wasp has been collected on E. crista-galli L., E. sandwicensis Deg., and E. stricta Roxb. It is uncertain at this time how many species of Erythrina the erythrina gall wasp may attack in Florida. DISTRIBUTION: The erythrina gall wasp is believed to have originated in Africa, but this remains uncertain. It was described (Kim et al 2004) from specimens from Singapore, Mauritius, and Reunion. In the past two years, it has spread to China, India, Taiwan, Philippines, and Hawaii (Heu et al 2006; Schmaedick et al 2006; ISSG 2006). -

The present study is a case study of how the formation of sand bars affects the natural mangrove ecosystem and becoming a threat to its rich biodiversity of flora and fauna. The Kadalundi – Vallikkunnu Community Reserve located in Kozhikode and Malappuram Districts in Kerala State is the first community reserve of Kerala, declared in 2007 which spread across 1.5 sq. km. and this area includes Kadalundi bird sanctuary, mangroves and estuarine. These area mainly affected by numerous biotic interferences like over fishing, collection of oyster and mussels, mining of sand and lime and also retting of coconut. The formation of sand bars at the mouth of the river has resulted in the massive die back of the mangrove vegetation, especially that of Avicennia Marina which is one of the five species of mangroves found in the Kadalundi – Vallikunnu community reserve. The illegal utilization of land for coconut plantation, urbanization and dumping of urban waste near the mouth of the river had made the problem highly complicated. The present study highlights the need for urgent measures to be adopted from the authorities to ensure community participation for restoration of community reserve. -

The field survey was conducted during the year 2010-2012 to access the present status of this unique plant based craft as well as the condition of the artisans involved in this craft making. Data were collected through interview with elderly artisans of the area of study. The result revealed that making artifacts from Bena is exclusively the hand work of female folk belonging to SC (Scheduled caste) and ST (Scheduled tribe) communities. Most of these artisans are either daily wage labourers or marginal farmers while making such craft is their secondary occupation. They collect the raw material, i.e. Bena stem from the nearby field, process it and make around two hundred varieties of attractive craft items both for traditional use in socio-religious rituals and as modern life style accessories. These artifacts are appreciated for their intricate design and glazing golden yellow colour. The existing conditions of this folk craft as well as the artisans were analysed. -

De Wilde Sciences, Allahabad, Uttar under agro-shade net controlled condition. The selected healthy branches of Saraca asoca Roxb. De Pradesh, India Wilde was cut into 15 cm length having 4 to 5 nodes (with in thickness 0.5-1.5 cm).The base positions of cuttings were dipped in the 100,300,500 and 800 ppm of IBA (Indole-3-butyric acid), NAA (α- Neelam Khare Naphthalene-acetic-acid) and IAA (Indole-3-acetic acid) respectively for four hours along with a control College of Forestry, Sam (without treatment). After which the cuttings were planted in the polypots filled with rooting media Higginbottom University of Agriculture Technology & consists of sand, soil and farm yard manure (FYM) in the ratio of 1:2:1. Jawaharlal Nehru tropical botanic garden and research institute, Spice garden Munnar, Carmelgiri botanical garden, Vaidyaratnam P.S Varier’s Arya Vaidya Sala Kottakkal are some important places of the state to visit for the knowledge of medicin al herbs. Piper nigrum, Myristica fragrans, Elettaria cardamomum, Syzygium aromaticum, Saraca asoca are the valuable herbs having healing properties and also promote immunity against several diseases. Brhat Trayi extensively described Piper nigrum as appetizer, carminative and anti –microbial. Elettaria cardamomum is a well documented aromatic condament in Indian medicine and tradition. -
