GAUGE:

10 sts + 14 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) with MC 7.5 sts + 9.25 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in St st with 2 strands CC held tog When you match the in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

M1 (make 1) An worked by lifting horizontal thread lying between needles and placing it onto left needle. Work this new stitch through the back loop. ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and k them tog.

BACK With 2 strands of CC held tog, cast on 110 sts and beg with p row, work 7 rows in St st. Place first 7 sts on holder; continue across row with one strand of MC as follows: K 8, M1, (k 9, M1) 8 times, k 8, M1, k 8; place remaining 7 sts on holder. Work even on 106 sts until MC section measures 16". Shoulder Shaping Bind off 4 sts at beg of each row 22 times – 18 sts remain. Place sts on holder for back neck. FRONT Work as for Back until MC section measures 15". Placket Opening Work 50 sts, join 2nd ball of MC, bind off 6 sts, work remaining sts – 50 sts each side. Working both sides at same time, continue shoulder shaping as for Back. At same time, when placket opening measures 5½", bind off 3 sts at neck edge once, 2 sts once, and 1 st once. Side Trim Slip 7 sts from holder onto needle and continue working St st with 2 strands CC held tog until strip measures 1½" less than side edge. Bind off 2 sts at outside edge twice, then bind off remaining 3 sts. Repeat on opposite side. Sew trim to body.

FINISHING Sew shoulder seams.

Hood With RS facing and one strand MC, pick up and k 31 sts around neck opening. Mark center st for shaping. Work 1 row even in St st. Increase Row K to marked st, M1, k 1, M1, k to end of row. Repeat last 2 rows 3 times more – 39 sts. Work even until Hood measures 9", ending with a WS row. Row K to 2 sts before marked st, ssk, k 1, k2tog, k to end of row. Work 1 row even. Repeat last 2 rows 3 times more, then repeat decrease row once – 29 sts. WS Decrease Row P to 2 sts before marked st, p2tog, p 1, p2tog tbl, p to end of row – 27 sts. Bind off all sts. Sew seam at top of Hood.

Hood/Placket Trim With RS facing and 2 strands of CC held tog, beg at right placket base, pick up and k 76 sts evenly along side of placket, around Hood, and along side of left placket. Work 7 rows St st. Bind off all sts. Overlap trim at base of placket and sew down.
