SUSTAINABILITY 1. Objective The PSWC Sustainability technical event aims to give civil and environmental engineering students the opportunity to learn about sustainability principles and practices. Using engineering and design principles, students will make connections between concepts learned in classes and real-life applications.

2. Background This year’s sustainability event will focus on evaluating the environmental impact of UCLA’s very own Edwin W. Pauley Pavilion. Pauley Pavilion is an indoor facility that is the primary host for UCLA’s basketball, , and games. However, after such events, the confetti, food packaging, water bottles and other trash left behind cannot be ignored. Following the UC’s Sustainable Practices Policy, which establishes goals in nine areas of sustainable practices: green building, clean energy, transportation, climate protection, sustainable operations, waste reduction and recycling, environmentally preferable purchasing, sustainable foodservice, sustainable water systems, UCLA has set the goal to have zero waste to landfill, or 95% or higher diversion by 2020. While current situations may have derailed this plan, eventually achieving zero waste to landfill should still be one of UCLA’s priorities. Thus, it is important that we address the waste that is associated with the usage of Pauley Pavilion as the primary host facility for official UCLA sports games. In this year’s sustainability event, students will evaluate the usage of Pauley Pavilion and develop a plan with changes that are both cost-effective and sustainable for the future to help UCLA achieve its goal of zero waste.

Refer to the Technical Report Submissions and Presentation Guidelines.pdf FAQ section for any clarifications.

☼ Cover Page Must include name of institution, names of all team members, title of report, and the date submitted.

☼ Table of Contents Must have a page number assigned to the following sections. Subsections can be made and included if you so choose to do so.

☼ Current Impacts This section will outline the impacts made by the usage of Pauley Pavilion within a month. At minimum, you must include the following 3 sections. Some other topics you may consider are materials and water usage. Include any formulas, calculations, and references used. You may make any assumptions when calculating the current impact as long as the reasoning behind the assumption is explained in the discussion section. a. Waste b. Energy Consumptions c. Energy Emissions i. Transportation ii. Location and Facilities

☼ Potential Areas for Improvement and Alternatives This section must follow the following format for each area that can be improved. List a minimum of one alternative to the proposed potential areas for improvement.

Potential Area for Improvement:

Alternative 1 Cost or Savings Pros and Cons (+ if alternative costs more, - if alternative costs less)

Potential Area for Improvement:

Alternative 1 Cost or Savings Pros and Cons

☼ Plan to Implement Alternatives Your team will use your best judgement to construct a realistic timeline of maximum 5 years. For every 6 months, outline the goals, metrics, and outcome of that time period.

This section should be formatted as it is below. a. Phase 1 (Months 1-6) i. Goals ii. Metrics iii. Outcome

☼ Discussion Evaluate how to best achieve these goals. Discuss the conditions required for the timeline to succeed. Be sure to include any obstacles one may face if your plan were to be implemented. Provide any limitations that your plan has. Explain any assumptions you may have made in your calculations for current impacts.
