The significance of technical textiles has increased rapidly over the past few years. In alone the producti- on of technical textiles has grown by approx. 40% since 1990. During this time German companies have establis- hed the leading position in this segment with an internati- onal market share of currently 45%.

The Neckar-Alb region has always been the textile hub, and it is still home to many major textile compa- nies today. The region also has several higher education establishments as well as private and public research and Dr Thomas Lindner is the chair- development institutes. These include the Institute of man of the management board Textile Technology and Process Engineering (ITV) in Den- of Groz-Beckert KG and president kendorf, the Technology and Development Centre (TEZ) of of the German machinery and plant manufacturing association Groz-Beckert in Albstadt, the Technology Workshop (Tech- (VDMA). Linked For bundling regional competences and to stimulate groundbreaking innovations in the field of technical texti- Informed les, the Cluster Technical Textiles Neckar-Alb (techtex) was Innovative set up in February 2012 by IHK Reutlingen (Reutlingen Chamber of Commerce and Industry). Currently, 49 com- panies, research institutes and initiatives are participating in the cluster activities (status quo: 04/2015)

The main responsibilities of the cluster’s management are linking the stakeholders, providing textile relevant infor- mation as well as initiating new research projects inclu- ding the consulting of grants. The cluster’s management organizes joint booths at international textile trade fairs, practices business development by technology transfer and informs about recent topics in the textile sector and about general regulations, e.g. the EU-Textile-Labeling-Re- gulation. Workshops on future topics offer a platform for establishing contacts and for the initiation of research projects. Also participants from outside the region Neck- ar-Alb are very welcome to take part in the cluster.

Core-yarns (antistatic, antibacterial, with fire protection classification B1, conductive) and cut-protection and sensor textiles

At Techtextil 2015, artecs GmbH presents cut-protection and sensor textiles for the first time, that were developed in cooperation with other companies. artecs offers yarns with antibacterial or antistatic properties. In combination with Trevira CS, these yarns have also been assigned to fire protection classification B1. For the application in hea- table textiles, these yarns offer a good conductivity.

The yarn of artecs GmbH is called Protect-fil®. It combines a functional core with silver-plated continuous multifila- ments – adapted to the end number of the core yarn – and cladded fibres. The cladded fibres, depending on area of application and requirements, consist of natural fibres (such as cotton, viscose, linen), of chemical fibres (such as polyes- ter, polyamide, aramid, Trevira CS) or of glass fibers. Due the many possible combinations of different cladded fibres and cores, the different yarns – combined with intelligent bonding during textile production – offer almost endless possible applications.

Carbon-Preform made of highly drapeable Heavy-Tow Leno Woven Non-Crimp Fabrics The FTA Forschungsgesellschaft für Textiltechnik Albstadt mbH develops innovative textile structures, which shall enable composite part production with decisive advanta- ges. The carbon-preform shown on the booth was pro- duced by a newly developed and patented leno weaving technology of heavy-tow carbon yarns. These leno woven non-crimp fabrics (NCF) show remarkable properties:

1. Economic heavy-tow carbon yarns can be processed now on weaving machines that are much cheaper than NCF machines based on warp knitting technology. 2. The drapeability of the leno woven NCF is better than the one of NCF structures, where the spacings of rein- forcing yarns and auxiliary yarns are not corresponding to each other. 3. The static mechanical composite properties are on the same level as the ones made of state of the art NCF, due to the fact that the reinforcing yarns are not crim- ped. 4. The auxiliary yarn systems can be made of non poly- meric yarns, e.g. glass, to avoid problems with micro cracking induced by polymeric auxiliary yarns in case of dynamic loading. This can be done without significant reduction of the manufacturing speed. Contac FTA Forschungsgesellschaft für Textiltechnik Albstadt mbH Dr. Ing.
