    Three Shades of Blue: Air Force Culture and Leadership Bernadette Pothan Submitted in fulfilment of the requirement of the degree of Master of Philosophy University College, the University of New South Wales 2013 Three Shades of Blue: Air Force Culture and Leadership ABSTRACT The study explores unconstructive ideas of power in the military. In the thesis doctrine is seen to promote ideas of power over others under cover of the language of leadership. The study explains how Australian Defence Doctrine Publication 00.6: Leadership in the Australian Defence Force confuses ideas of command and leadership, and asserts that in doctrine unconstructive ideas of power have engulfed ideas of leadership. More than published text, doctrine is understood to describe ideas which have pervasive cultural meaning and impact. The thesis explores how acculturated myths of power are causally relevant to air accidents, decayed maintenance standards, and the prejudice borne by women in the Service. The so- called ‘warrior culture’ is interrogated as the rationalisation of unconstructive power and the aggregated risk which follows on its heels. The focus of the study is narrowed to the Royal New Zealand Air Force, and explicit attention is devoted to the ‘characters’ which give life to unhelpful elements of the ‘warrior culture’. The thesis unpacks the ‘characters’ (‘Aircrew’, ‘Maintenance Crew’, and ‘Support Crew’) and explores how unconstructive ideas of power are discernable in Air Force culture. ‘Aircrew’ are seen to infuse and dominate every aspect of Air Force life. ‘Maintenance Crew’ is a symbol for the Air Force maintenance culture, revealing the controlling influence and the practical repercussions of the ‘Aircrew’ myth.

But blue, in all its myriad shades and hues, is the color of serenity. Blue is soothing to the soul. Perhaps the most breath-taking sight I’ve ever seen was when I once stood in a high mountain meadow filled with tall, graceful aspen trees at the height of their golden glory. As it is with the sky, blue eyes come in many shades, from light silver-blue to bright aquamarine to soft cornflower blue. Because they are rare, blue eyes are often considered to be the most beautiful. Then there are the many shades of blue that can be found in the sea. Depending upon its mood, the sea can appear green, gray, or a deep, dark navy blue. Navy blue is a solemn, steadfast color. People respond with respect when you wear navy blue. Today indigo is also produced synthetically and available in various shades. A variety of plants, such as Indigofera species or Isatis tinctoria, provide the indigo dye. Indigofera species can be found all over the world. The dye is obtained from the processing of the plant's leaves.     Indigo, Magical Indigo! Indigo is one of the oldest dyes used for coloring fabrics and the one still used today to color blue jeans. Indigo dye comes from a plant. The beautiful blue dye is made from the leaves of the plant through a process of fermenta- tion. Indigo is grown in subtropical climates including some southern states of the United States. Throughout history indigo was revered and sought after as a valuable com- modity. Fabrics dyed with indigo were not only used for fashions but also for religious rituals and to distinguish social or political status. The procedure of dyeing with indigo has changed little throughout time. This distinctive blue dye still provides one of the most wondrous and rewarding dyeing expe- riences available to any dyer. Dyeing with indigo is unique compared to other dyes. In its natural state, indigo is insoluble in water. Therefore it must go through a process where it is ‘reduced’ and put into a liquid state with the oxygen removed. Although recipes for dye vats vary, all are based on reducing the indigo into a water- soluble form. In the ‘reduced’ state the indigo dye liquid is a yellow green color and in this form the indigo will be able to penetrate the fibers of the fabric. When the fabric is removed from the dye vat it is initially this same yellow green color, but begins to turn blue as the oxygen in the air reacts with the indigo. As the indigo oxidizes it becomes trapped within the fibers, making the dye permanent.

Despite its widespread use in the Mesoamerican artistic production and numerous studies devoted to understand the type of interactions between indigo and the host framework, its technology has not been completely unravelled yet. In this study portable non-invasive UV–vis refection spectroscopy is proposed as a robust method for in situ investigation of Maya blue pigments. Laboratory mock-ups of powder Maya blue have been prepared employing diferent synthesis procedures (varying the nature of: clays, indigo–clay ratios, heating temperatures and time). The goodness of the pre- pared Maya blue samples—namely the occurrence of indigo–clay interactions—have been probed by micro-Raman spectroscopy and related UV–vis spectral markers have been identifed. DFT calculations as well have been performed to deeply explain UV–vis profles. The set of spectral markers have been fnally exploited to interpret spectra recorded on Mesoamerican pictorial codices, through a multi-technique approach based on exploring the UV–Vis properties of the blue paint supported by the FT-IR vibrational study of the inorganic clays. The characterization of blue colours on pre-Hispanic and colonial Mesoamerican codices contribute to a better understanding of the compositional variabil- ity of these painting materials and to point out the existence of diferent technological traditions of colour prepara- tion in ancient Mesoamerica.
