Newman, Wing Heritage Officer 80 years have elapsed since the Battle of Britain. Most Canadians, including in the armed forces, have never heard of it. To many of those who have, it is a blip of history in an ancient, largely forgotten war. The question begs: so why do we bother to commemorate it? Because that single three-and-a-half-long month battle in summer 1940 decided more than the survival of Britain--the fate of the entire world and its 2 ½ billion people were at stake. September 1939 Nazi Germany fell upon Poland, enslaving and murdering its people, starting the Second World War, then over the next 10 months swept through Western Europe (neutral countries excepted) until only Britain was left standing. Britain was key to the world. If it was defeated, Germany would gain total dominion over Europe and be impossible to dislodge. Its armies would be free to strike at Russia, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Meanwhile, since 1936 Japan been waging a campaign to conquer the Far East, with an Hit by gunfire from the twin-engine German Heinkel He-111 bomber seen here, a flaming Royal Air Force Spitfire fighter flashes by the eye to seize all of Asia. The Comox Air Force Museum’s Guide to the Aircraft of the Heritage Air Park By Dan Brennan *All photographs found in this guide are subject to copyright and cannot be reused without the express written permission of the owner. Canadair CL-28 Argus Mark I Argus 10719 of 415 Squadron on maritime patrol. From Greek mythology, the “Argus” was an all-seeing creature with 100 eyes. This name was appropriate due to the numerous highly sophisticated sensing devices carried on board, with antennas everywhere. Note the large nose radome of the Mark I. Protruding from the tail is the MAD Boom, a Magnetic Anomaly Detector which detects the magnetic field surrounding a steel submarine. The Canadian-built, Canadair Argus was a unique hybrid that employed the wings, tail surfaces and undercarriage of the British designed Bristol Britannia transport aircraft, married to a completely new unpressurized fuselage of Canadian design and equipped with different American-designed engines. One of the most effective anti-submarine warfare aircraft of its day, the Argus was a mainstay for the RCAF in the maritime role. The principal difference between the Mark I and Mark II was primarily in the different navigation, communication and tactical electronic equipment fitted internally. Externally, the Mark II exhibited a redesigned smaller nose radome and additional ECM antennae above the fuselage. The Argus replaced the Lancaster and Neptune aircraft types and eventually, the Argus was itself to be replaced by the current Lockheed CP-140 Aurora aircraft. The Argus flew with the Maritime Proving & Evaluation Unit and the following Squadrons: 404, 405, 407, 415, and 449. -

Specific uses for said stores are identified throughout the Instructional Guide, within the teaching point for which they are required. Prior to instructing this lesson the instructor shall: review the lesson content, and become familiar with the material. prepare the slips of paper found in Annex A. If available a guest speaker may deliver this lecture. The speaker should be made aware of the requirements of the period. It is the responsibility of the instructor to ensure any information not covered is provided to the cadets through a question and answer session following the presentation. PRE-LESSON ASSIGNMENT N/A. APPROACH The interactive lecture method was chosen as it allows the instructor to make a semi-formal presentation of the material where the cadets can participate by asking or responding to questions and commenting on the material. For this lesson, this method is most effective as it matches well the taxonomic level of the material and is age-appropriate by virtue of its participatory nature. REVIEW N/A. OBJECTIVES By the end of this lesson the cadet shall be expected to identify the different elements of the Canadian Forces (CF), and the roles assigned to each. -

You would think that those two words would put a damper on the efforts of over thirty members of 51 Aerospace Control & Warning (Operational Training) Squadron (51 AC&W (OT) Sqn) during the 22 Wing Cares roadside stop held on Wednesday, December 11th, however, nothing could be farther from the truth! “Everyone loves to come out to support this initiative,” explains Major Andrew Lunn, Commanding Officer of 51 AC&W (OT) Sqn. With a full complement of instructors, students and staff in attendance – and even Santa - asking motorists to give generously to the North Bay Food Bank, they collected $2690.23 in donations and 1330 lbs of food for a total of 4020 lbs of food (1 dollar = 1 lb of food). The brain child of Tom Hedican, international renowned hockey coach, 51 AC&W (OT) Sqn’s Honorary Colonel emeritus and creator of Coach4Food in 2008, the program is now under the banner of My Team Cares and coordinated by Debbie and Heath Marson. 2019 marks the ninth year that 22 Wing has, once again, stepped up to support those in greatest need, showing North Bay how much we care. Bitter temperatures? Over thirty members of 51 Aerospace Control & Warning (Operational Training) Squadron (51 AC&W (OT) Sqn) successfully challenged both the COVID-19 virus and cold weather during the 22 Wing Cares roadside stop held on Tuesday, December 8th! This year, with the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of hockey sticks was introduced to promote physical distancing when approaching motorists who donated cash. “A truly Canadian innovation,” explained Lieutenant-Colonel Andrew Lunn, Commanding Officer of 51 AC&W (OT) Sqn. In an effort to encourage contactless drop offs, motorists placed non-perishable food items in the trunks of their vehicles so that awaiting volunteers could remove the bags in a seamless, coordinated manner. With a full complement of instructors, students and staff in attendance asking motorists to give generously to the North Bay Food Bank, they collected $2 593.20 in donations and 767 lbs of food for a total of 3 360 lbs of food (1 dollar = 1 lb of food).
