Article by: Captain Leah Pierce, Public Affairs Conducting a cross-country tour of Canada from 6 to 10 January, -General (Lt Gen) Marc Sasseville, Commander Continental US North American Aerospace Defense Command Region – 1st Air Force (CONR Comd), was accompanied by his deputy, Major-General Derek Joyce (RCAF). Arriving in North Bay, via Sudbury, on Tuesday, January 7th, 2020, after visiting 1 Canadian Air /Canadian NORAD Region Headquarters in , they departed on January 8th for to meet with the leadership at the Canadian Joint Operations Command, RCAF, Assistant Deputy Minister Policy and the Vice Chief of the Defence Staff. Why would the CONR Commander wish to leave sunny and warm Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, to visit the snowy and stormy Canadian Air Defence Sector? For those not familiar with the NORAD structure, CONR includes two defence sectors: the Western Air Defence Sector or WADS located at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington State, and Eastern Air Defence Sector or EADS located at Rome, New York. The answer? To learn more about air defence sector operations. While at 22 , Lt Gen Sasseville and MGen Joyce met with wing leadership, toured the CADS Ops Floor and visited with personnel at 21 Aerospace Control & Warning Squadron. Then, they visited Raytheon for a brief on the , toured the Mission Training System and visited with personnel at 51 Aerospace Control & Warning (Operational Training) Squadron. After a few coin presentations, Lt Gen Sasseville and MGen Joyce wrapped up their stay with a visit to the “Igloo” for a town hall with members of Detachment 2, . If the intent of Lt Gen Sasseville’s visit was to familiarize himself with CADS operations, issues and events, and to meet with wing and unit command teams, then … mission accomplished! 2 THE SHIELD / LE BOUCLIER FEBRUARY / FÉVRIER
