A Service of HOLY for

This service is during and the liturgical colour is purple signifying a penitential season of the year.

Lent begins on and continues to Palm . It is a time to prepare ourselves for the great events of and Day. Beginning with the wilderness experience of Jesus, Lent is an opportunity for us to examine our own lives and experience in the light of the message of and Easter Sunday.

Before the service begins, you may like to use the time to sit quietly and prepare yourself to meet God in this act of worship. You may find the following words helpful.

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are those whom mourn, for they shall be comforted

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.

Blessed are those who suffer persecution for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy , the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

7 RESOURCES FOR HOLY WEEK

We are offering services and resources during Holy Week this year. We have set this out below:-

Walks for Holy Week and Easter The Churches Together in Baildon invite you to take two ecumenical strolls this Easter time. Roy and Jean Lorrain-Smith have created two new prayer walks, one for Holy Week entitled the Graveyard Walk and the other for Easter week called the Easter Life Walk. Both are easy walking. In these covid times we cannot walk en masse, but we can walk with another person , and we would invite you to be paired for these walks with a member of a different church to your own. You are invited to register with Rev David Haworth by Thursday 25th March, and he will pair you up for the walk. You then agree a time with your ‘partner’, and off you go. David can be contacted at [email protected] or 01274 593570. Or you might like to do the walks with other members of your household. Copies of the walks will be available in a box outside St John's Church from Palm Sunday onwards.

Holy Week and Easter Trail We have created a short trail of images which show moments on the journey of Jesus to the cross and the new life of Easter. The trail begins on Browgate at the gates to , and then moves up to the Methodist Church cafe and then on to the lychgate at St John's Church. The trail will go up for Palm Sunday, 28 March with an Easter image to complete the set on Easter Day. The trail will stay up for 2 weeks.

Clergy in Baildon—Vicars V Facebook posts Clergy in Churches Together in Baildon have got together to serve up a taster and four course ‘meal’ in the form of conversations. They will be available for people to ‘tuck’ into the events of Holy Week. The taster will be released on our Facebook pages on Palm Sunday, then daily from to Sunday.

Good Friday—there will be a pre-recorded service for the Last Hour of the Cross available to view from 2.00pm on Good Friday. There will be readings by members of the congregations, hymns and anthems sung by St John’s Choir recorded virtually this year and reflections which we hope will take you through the terrible events of Good Friday. Available on our Facebook page and Youtube channel.

8 Easter Day—as announced last week St John’s Church will be open for public worship on Easter Day which is fantastic news. Obviously we will be strictly adhering to COVID regulations but it good to back in church once again. The services are:-

8.30am—a short Communion service without hymns 9.45am—Easter Communion Service 11.15am—Easter Family Communion Service followed by the Easter Egg Hunt. From around 12noon worksheets will be available from outside St John’s to lead you on a trail around Baildon Village to find letters to make a phrase. Once completed you are invited to come back to the Church Hall (double doors that open on to the playground) before 3pm to tell us the phrase you have found and collect an Easter Egg. Sounds like lots of fun with chocolate at the end!!

Don’t forget about the resources to help you in your journey through Lent, particularly:-

Lent Appeal – Clean drinking water is a basic human right. This should be a normal part of daily life for everyone, everywhere – but it isn’t. That's why the charity WaterAid is here. With your help, WaterAid is working with partners in some of the toughest places in the world. To- gether, they've already reached millions of people with clean wa- ter, decent toilets and good hygiene, enabling entire communities to un- lock their potential, break free from poverty and change their lives for good. Imagine if you had to travel miles each day to collect water that isn’t even clean and using this for your family for drinking, washing etc. and think how fortunate we are in this country. During Lent please think how we take for granted turning on the tap for fresh water and how many times you flush the toilet each and every day. Please donate and you will help many people have a safe future. Fun ways to give:  Give 20p/50p/£1 every time you fill the kettle, or flush the toilet or wash your hands.  Women and children have to walk 4km, 8km or even 12km each day for clean water. Take part in the Walk for Water Challenge. Challenge yourself to walk 12km during Lent, you can do either in one walk or several walks and then give a donation to Water Aid or get your walk sponsored. You can make a BACS donation to Baildon Parochial Church Council in the usual way, adding the reference WATERAID to your payment. 9 – We are offering a service of Night Prayer every evening at 9.30pm during Lent and Holy Week, live streamed onto Parish of Baildon Facebook.

Traidcraft - Celebrate the real meaning of Easter with The Real Easter Egg. Apart from a tasty Fairtrade chocolate Easter egg, you will receive a booklet containing the story of the first Easter; the final week of Jesus' life and the events of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sun- day. There's even a £200 prize competition inside! Also available in dark chocolate. To enjoy a real ethical treat this Easter why not order The Real Easter Egg? (Other eggs are available).
