Stand Hymn: How Great Thou Art 1 Kneel Reader We gather here on this Good Friday to keep vigil and pray with our Savior during the hours of His Passion. May the time we spend this afternoon draw us closer to the suffering Christ. In order to maintain a reverent pace while praying together, please pause at each slash mark (/). All Lord Jesus,/ you ask us to carry our cross each day./ We have not always followed Your teachings, Your way of life, and yet You love us without conditions./ Today we come to you in our weakness./ Give us courage to stand by You in Your agony, now and whenever a share in that suffering enters our own lives./ Help us to do the Father’s will,/ and make us selfless in our charity towards all. Reader Jesus said: “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me...” All Lord, help us to follow You. Rather, He emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross. All At the name of Jesus/ every knee must bow,/ and tongue confess/ that Jesus Christ is Lord,/ to the glory of God the Father. Reader Therefore God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name which is above every other name. So that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. All Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee! Reader In faith you conceived in your womb God and man, Jesus Christ, our Lord. All Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee! Reader Blessed Virgin, true Mother of the eternal Word, your own heart was pierced by a sword even while you did the will of the Father. All Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee! Reader Blessed Virgin, you stood at the foot of our Savior’s cross. All Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee! Reader You were assumed into heaven as a foreshadowing of our own destiny. Strengthen our faith so that, like Mary, we may ponder the mystery of our redemption and persevere until You call us to Yourself. We ask this through the same Christ, our Lord. Those who know me, these who know me like mere strangers have now withdrawn from me, those who were my dear friends have all forgotten me. Reflection Response Kneel Reader As we remember the Passion of our Lord, let us join ourselves with Him as He prayed the 22nd Psalm. My God, my God, why have You forsaken me? You are far from my prayer, from the words of my cry. O God, I cry out by day and You answer not; by night and there is no relief for me. All Lamb of God,/ You take away the sins of the world./ Have mercy on us. Reader I am a worm, not a man; the scorn of me, despised by the people. All who see me scoff at me. They mock me with parted lips, they wag their heads. All Lamb of God,/ You take away the sins of the world./ Have mercy on us. Reader I am like water poured out; all my bones are racked. They have pierced my hands and my feet; I can count all my bones. All Lamb of God,/ You take away the sins of the world./ Have mercy on us. 8 Reader They look on and gloat over me; They divide my garments among them, and for my vesture they cast lots. She enrolled in the University of Texas at Austin at age 16 to major in piano, but “accidentally” learned organ pedal technique while recuperating from a hand injury. By age 19, she had mastered the pedals; received a bachelor’s degree, and won a national organ competition. She later earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from UT. In 2010 she was honored by the American Guild of Organists for her achievements in performance, teaching, and sacred music.     1 A Celebration of the Word for Palm Sunday At an appropriate time, gather together to celebrate Palm Sunday and Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. A simple prayer space can be created for the entire Holy Week, starting today with a candle, crucifix, and/or palms / other plants available (or, children might create palm branches). If there is Holy Water in the home, the family may sign themselves when they gather with it. If the hymn is unfamiliar, you may find it on the internet (example: YouTube), shorten it, or simply move on to the other prayers. A leader should divide up the roles and adjust the service as necessary to make sure everyone is able to participate. The veiling of the images is a symbol of the deep withdrawal the Church experiences as we contemplate the Passion of the Lord. The Stations of the Cross are the only things left uncovered as we are invited to walk with the Lord on His journey that leads to His crucifixion and death. In that journey we are invited to offer our own sufferings to him. In doing so we can see that many of the emotions that we feel and have experienced in our life are the same as the Lord experienced on that Good Friday. We are called to be followers of Christ and be obedient to Him and act upon His Word. When we serve Him we also serve the Father. Christ was obedient to the Father and was submissive to Him. This is servanthood not slavery. It is voluntary, when we submit to the will of the Father. The Lord’s entire life was spent in relation to fulfilling the Father’s will. His human and Divine will working being oriented towards the Father’s Will. It is in submitting our hearts and minds to the Father that we imitate Jesus. It is not about checking off boxes or just obeying rules, our Catholic faith life is much richer, we are called to imitate and submit to the Father through the Son, inspired through the Holy Spirit.
