The Antiphonary of Bangor and its Musical Implications by Helen Patterson A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Music University of Toronto © Copyright by Helen Patterson 2013 The Antiphonary of Bangor and its Musical Implications Helen Patterson Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Music University of Toronto 2013 Abstract This dissertation examines the hymns of the Antiphonary of Bangor (AB) (Antiphonarium Benchorense, Milan, Biblioteca Ambrosiana C. 5 inf.) and considers its musical implications in medieval Ireland. Neither an antiphonary in the true sense, with chants and verses for the Office, nor a book with the complete texts for the liturgy, the AB is a unique Irish manuscript. Dated from the late seventh-century, the AB is a collection of Latin hymns, prayers and texts attributed to the monastic community of Bangor in Northern Ireland. Given the scarcity of information pertaining to music in early Ireland, the AB is invaluable for its literary insights. Studied by liturgical, medieval, and Celtic scholars, and acknowledged as one of the few surviving sources of the Irish church, the manuscript reflects the influence of the wider Christian world. The hymns in particular show that this form of poetical expression was significant in early Christian Ireland and have made a contribution to the corpus of Latin literature. Prompted by an earlier hypothesis that the AB was a type of choirbook, the chapters move from these texts to consider the monastery of Bangor and the cultural context from which the manuscript emerges. As the Irish peregrini are known to have had an impact on the continent, and the AB was recovered in ii Bobbio, Italy, it is important to recognize the hymns not only in terms of monastic development, but what they reveal about music. -

THE DIVINE OFFICE BRO. EMMANUEL NUGENT, 0. P. PIRITUAL life must be supplied by spiritual energy. An efficient source of spiritual energy is prayer. From Holy Scripture we learn that we should pray always. li In general, this signifies that whatever we do should be done for the honor and glory of God. In a more restricted sense, it requires that each day be so divided that at stated in tervals we offer to God acts of prayer. From a very early period it has been the custom of the Church, following rather closely the custom that prevailed among the Chosen People, and later among the Apostles and early Christians, to arrange the time for her public or official prayer as follows: Matins and Lauds (during the night), Prime (6 A.M.), Tierce (9 A.M.), Sext (12M.), None (3 P.M.), Vespers (6 .P. M.), Compline (nightfall). The Christian day is thus sanc tified and regulated and conformed to the verses of the Royal Psalmist: "I arose at midnight to give praise to Thee" (Matins), "Seven times a day have I given praise to Thee"1 (Lauds and the remaining hours). Each of the above divisions of the Divine Office is called, in liturgical language, an hour, conforming to the Roman and Jewish third, sixth, and ninth hour, etc. It is from this division of the day that the names are given to the various groups of prayers or hours recited daily by the priest when he reads his breviary. It is from the same source that has come the name of the service known to the laity as Sunday Vespers, and which constitutes only a portion of the Divine Office for that day. -

UNDERSTANDING WHEN TO KNEEL, SIT AND STAND AT A TRADITIONAL LATIN MASS __________________________ A Short Essay on Mass Postures __________________________ by Richard Friend I. Introduction A Catholic assisting at a Traditional Latin Mass for the first time will most likely experience bewilderment and confusion as to when to kneel, sit and stand, for the postures that people observe at Traditional Latin Masses are so different from what he is accustomed to. To understand what people should really be doing at Mass is not always determinable from what people remember or from what people are presently doing. What is needed is an understanding of the nature of the liturgy itself, and then to act accordingly. When I began assisting at Traditional Latin Masses for the first time as an adult, I remember being utterly confused with Mass postures. People followed one order of postures for Low Mass, and a different one for Sung Mass. I recall my oldest son, then a small boy, being thoroughly amused with the frequent changes in people’s postures during Sung Mass, when we would go in rather short order from standing for the entrance procession, kneeling for the preparatory prayers, standing for the Gloria, sitting when the priest sat, rising again when he rose, sitting for the epistle, gradual, alleluia, standing for the Gospel, sitting for the epistle in English, rising for the Gospel in English, sitting for the sermon, rising for the Credo, genuflecting together with the priest, sitting when the priest sat while the choir sang the Credo, kneeling when the choir reached Et incarnatus est etc. -

The Musical Life and Aims of the Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham a paper given by the Reverend Monsignor Andrew Burnham, Assistant to the Ordinary, at the Blessed John Henry Newman Institute of Liturgical Music, Birmingham. When the Holy Father visited Westminster Abbey just two years ago, his pleasure was evident as he encountered not only the splendour of the building but also its orderly musical tradition. It was an occasion in preparation for which considerable ingenuity had been expended – in that rather over-attentive way that Anglicans go about things – and, whereas you and I know that what the Pope would undoubtedly have preferred would have been the opportunity to sit in choir – on however splendid a cushion – and absorb the glory of a weekday choral evensong, what he got was something rather more bespoke. Pontiffs and prelates are never allowed to experience things as they actually are. Nonetheless, I am sure it was not lost on him that, greeted by a Latin motet written by an Irish Protestant composer, Charles Villiers Stanford, and an English anthem written by an English recusant composer, William Byrd, he was encountering a very sophisticated musical tradition. It is a tradition that has inspired not only Irish Protestants to set Latin texts, but also sceptics, devout and not so devout, to set canticles and anthems, and, in the case of Vaughan Williams, to put his innate atheism to one side and compile what remains the best of the English hymnbooks. There is a certain amount of evidence that, when the Holy See began to talk about inviting groups of Anglicans into the full communion of the Catholic Church, some in Rome expected to receive diocesan bishops, with their cathedrals, their cathedral choirs, their parish clergy, their parish churches, and the laity of the parishes. -

The news S accounts have been concerned with the radical changes, the upset of traditional practices, and the technical details of the re stored Holy Week services, but the real issue in the reform is the development of true holiness in the members of Christ's Church. This is the expectation of Pope Pius XII, as expressed personally by him. It is insisted upon repeatedly in the official language of the new laws - the goal is simple: that the faithful may take part in the most sacred week of the year "more easily, more devoutly, and more fruitfully." Certainly the changes now commanded ,by the Apostolic See are extraordinary, particularly since they come after nearly four centuries of little liturgical development. This is especially true of the different times set for the principal services. On Holy Thursday the solemn evening Mass now becomes a clearer and more evident memorial of the Last Supper of the Lord on the night before He suffered. On Good Friday, when Holy Mass is not offered, the liturgical service is placed at three o'clock in the afternoon, or later, since three o'clock is the "ninth hour" of the Gospel accounts of our Lord's Crucifixion. -

Singing the Prostopinije Samohlasen Tones in English: A Tutorial Metropolitan Cantor Institute Byzantine Catholic Metropolia of Pittsburgh 2006 The Prostopinije Samohlasen Melodies in English For many years, congregational singing at Vespers, Matins and the Divine Liturgy has been an important element in the Eastern Catholic and Orthodox churches of Southwestern Ukraine and the Carpathian mountain region. These notes describes one of the sets of melodies used in this singing, and how it is adapted for use in English- language parishes of the Byzantine Catholic Church in the United States. I. Responsorial Psalmody In the liturgy of the Byzantine Rite, certain psalms are sung “straight through” – that is, the verses of the psalm(s) are sung in sequence, with each psalm or group of psalms followed by a doxology (“Glory to the Father, and to the Son…”). For these psalms, the prostopinije chant uses simple recitative melodies called psalm tones. These melodies are easily applied to any text, allowing the congregation to sing the psalms from books containing only the psalm texts themselves. At certain points in the services, psalms or parts of psalms are sung with a response after each verse. These responses add variety to the service, provide a Christian “pointing” to the psalms, and allow those parts of the service to be adapted to the particular hour, day or feast being celebrated. The responses can be either fixed (one refrain used for all verses) or variable (changing from one verse to the next). Psalms with Fixed Responses An example of a psalm with a fixed response is the singing of Psalm 134 at Matins (a portion of the hymn called the Polyeleos): V. -
