    Spanish Art & Culture Julio Iglesias Julio Iglesias' Biography as found at his official website - www.julioiglesias.com Julio Iglesias was born in Madrid on 23rd September 1943 to Dr. Julio Iglesias Puga and Maria Del Rosario de la Cueva y Perignat. He shared his childhood with his brother Carlos. His father, Dr. Iglesias Puga, was born in Orense, Galicia. On his mother's side, his grandfather was Jose de la Cueva, a famous Andalusian journalist. He was a remarkable athlete, and he played goalkeeper for the junior Real Madrid soccer team. He wanted to be a professional soccer player, but he never abandoned his studies. He studied Law in the Complutense University of Madrid. On the night of 22nd September 1963, while returning from Majadahonda to Madrid about two o'clock in the morning with some friends, he suffered a very severe car accident which left him semi-paralyzed for more than a year and a half. The hope that he would walk again was very slight. To develop and increase the dexterity of his hands he started to play the guitar and write poetry. His personal will to live, and the great support of his family, especially of his father, who even abandoned his profession for more than a year to help his son's rehabilitation, produced a true miracle. After many months of very difficult recuperation Julio began to walk again. Once recovered, he resumed his studies and travelled to England to study English, first in Ramsgate and then went on to Bell's Language School in Cambridge.

    ARTICULOS OTOÑO 2020 BY GINA SHAW Juntos es mejor Cuando se le diagnosticó demencia a su esposo, la cantante Vikki Carr se convirtió en su cuidadora y aprendió lecciones valiosas sobre el amor y la salud. Fotografía por Randee St. Nicholas Durante casi 20 años, la tres veces ganadora del Grammy, Vikki Carr, disfrutó de una vida doméstica felizmente ordinaria con su esposo, Pedro De León, un médico de familia. “Nuestro tiempo juntos era increíble”, comenta la cantante. “De 5 a.m. a 7 p.m. atendía a sus pacientes; después, si teníamos algún evento, me decía: ‘Cariño, me ducho y estoy listo’. Y siempre lo estaba. Cuidó de mí”. Hasta que no pudo hacerlo más y entonces Carr intervino. La hermana de De León fue la primera en notar cambios en su conducta entre 2010 y 2011: se volvió olvidadizo, estaba confundido, y tenía problemas para prescribir recetas. “Ella era enfermera en su consultorio y estuvo con él durante casi 50 años, en la misma habitación todo el tiempo, así que ella lo detectó desde el inicio”, explica Carr. A principios de 2012, a los 82 años, De León fue diagnosticado formalmente con demencia. Pero Carr aún no lo aceptaba. “No podía ver lo que se avecinaba hasta que un día se sentó conmigo, me miró y dijo: ‘Te amo’, yo le respondí ‘Yo también te amo cariño’, pero entonces golpeó la mesa con el puño y me dijo enfáticamente: ‘Te amo y pase lo que pase conmigo, no quiero que nunca lo olvides’”. Carr, quien recibió el Lifetime Achievement Grammy de Latin Recording Academy en 2008, tomó un descanso del escenario para atender a su marido, quien murió el año pasado.

    A Pan-American Anthem, a 21st Century Troubadour The Venezuelan song “Alma Llanera”, premiered in Caracas more than a century ago, encapsulates a universal yearning: “I love, I weep, I sing, I dream”. These four essential and deeply emotional feelings can be felt by anyone, rich or poor, young and old. That’s what anthems are made of. Anyone, anywhere, can identify with an anthem, no matter the language. This is an album of anthems. Pan-American anthems in Spanish, Portuguese and English. Once upon a time in Latin America, “El Cancionero Picot” unified the continent with songs. This popular songbook was distributed by a company that sold an effervescent antacid called ‘Sal de Uvas Picot’. Radio stations from Mexico to Argentina broadcast a nightly music program, sponsored by Picot, featuring songs from across the continent. Listeners sang along to tangos, boleros, rancheras, pasillos, bambucos, valses and other popular Latin American anthems sung in different accents, but filled with emotions anyone could identify with. During those days, people tuned their radio on at night and listened to the latest songs from Mexico to Argentina. They listened and, thanks to the Cancionero Picot, sang along with the pop stars of the day. They sang along to “Alma Llanera”, a joropo from Venezuela glorifying life in the countryside; they sang “Nube Gris” a Peruvian vals, at one point more popular than Chabuca Granda’s “La Flor de la Canela”, another classic anthem from Peru. They sang along to “Historia de un amor”, a bolero written in 1955 by Panama’s composer Carlos Eleta Almarán, inspired by the passing of his brother’s wife.

Solo quería estar solo, lejos, y pensar, pensar… aunque seguramente acabaría emborrachándome para escapar de mis pensamientos. Llegué al coche. Lo había dejado abierto con la prisa y la fiebre, cuando mis labios se perdían entre sus fragantes cabellos, las manos temblando bajo el abrigo rojo. Comprobé que, milagrosamente, todo continuaba en su lugar, incluso el portátil, descuidadamente abandonado sobre el asiento trasero. Giré la llave en el contacto para salir como una bala marcha atrás, y entonces lo vi. Era un guante gris. Arrugado, casi oculto entre el asiento y el respaldo. Y no tuve que cogerlo para vislumbrar que también estaba manchado de sangre.     GUÍA “Como agua para chocolate” , de LAURA ESQUIVEL 1. AUTORA Laura Esquivel nació en Ciudad de México en el año 1950. Maestra y especialista en teatro infantil, antes de escribir su primera novela Como agua para chocolate , ya había tenido la oportunidad de componer numerosos guiones cinematográficos. En 1989 obtuvo un gran éxito con esta publicación primera, que fue llevada al cine por el director Alfonso Arau, partiendo del guión escrito por la propia Laura Esquivel. El relato de una historia de amor desde los fogones de una cocina conquistó al público y a la crítica que habló, no ya de realismo mágico, sino de la magia de la literatura o la literatura mágica al referirse a esta obra. Aquellas primeras ideas que apuntara en la obra que le dio fama, Como agua para chocolate , vuelven a aparecer en Íntimas suculencias (1998), una recopilación de cuentos que acompañan a recetas de cocina, donde la autora insiste en su máxima de que "Uno es lo que se come, con quién lo come y cómo lo come". Explicación del Titulo: "Como Agua para Chocolate" significa estar en punto de ebullición, hirviendo, como debe estar el agua para hacer el chocolate: “Tita estaba como agua para chocolate, porque hervía de rabia, se sentía mal y enojada con Rosaura, porque ésta quería que su hija la cuidara hasta que ella muriera. Tita no podía creer que su hermana obligara hacer a su hija, lo mismo que le hicieron a ella, arruinándole la vida. Por eso ella quería vivir hasta lo suficiente, para tratar de impedir que su hermana siguiera llevando a cabo esa tradición familiar, la que la había hecho a ella sufrir durante toda su vida.

Born in 1978 in the province of Álava in the Basque Country, made his entry at Avant Pétalos Grillados just 18 years old with Footsy: filmed on Super-8, it explores the fetishistic obsessions of a (SPANISH) FILM REVIEW socially repressed man. In May 2002 his second short-film Der Milchshorf (La Costa Lactea) is broadcasted in the TVE (Spanish National TV), where the introducer describes it as « the most Avant Pétalos Grillados weird short-film shown by this programme ». In 2004 Broca writes and directs Kinky Hoodoo (SPANISH) ROMAN-TIME Voodoo, showed at the Sitges and San Sebastian Festivals. Such talented and crazy personality could not become associated with Nacho Vigalondo caves in La Rioja settings for (check out Vigalondo’s film 7.35 de la mañana in the CinemaAttic Cuarantena 3).
