Mrs. Rufina Nageshyiya, 28, a women of Kathgaon village, Dumri, Gumla, W/O Mr. Binay Nageshiya is supported with Poultry farming for earning livelihood supported by CFD & DKA Austria.

Her family belongs to Scheduled Caste and marginal land holding family. The livelihood of her, husband and three of children from agricultural land of size 0.65 Acres is not sufficient for the whole year. It was able to fulfill the food need for only 5 – 6 months. Rest of the time, they usually migrate with family to work outside. She along with her husband used to move but she was feeling very unsafe there.

While village planning meeting with CFD staff, she urged for livelihood support and she was supported with 25 poultry birds (Dibyan variety – Ranchi Krishi Vigyan Kendra) which is considered as country poultry and grows at the weight of 5 Kg. The hen also gives at least of 210 eggs.

She is happy with these poultry birds as she has sold five of cocks in Rs.2500 and the eggs through JSKUPC Ltd. And now she is getting daily at least 12- 15/day which is also of income source of daily Rs.120 – 150. Thus, she expects that she would be having the income ranging from 16000 – 18000 yearly.

She wants to take this enterprise ahead of 100 birds so that she could get Rs.25000 each year as the need of the family is increasing with growth of children for their education, clothes etc.

Study & Research Innovation:

Program Documentation of Agrarian Prosperity Program (APP), Palkot, Gumla, supported by Caritas India and implementing partner organication i.e., Naya Savera Vikas Kendre (NSVK) which was carried out for the specific objectives:  Good agriculture practices,  Good quality photographs accompanying the studies and stories  Documentation of climate friendly agriculture practice  Documentation of traditional practices and innovation

A short preview of the study:

The innovation is carried out in 10 villages of Palkot block, Gumla, Jharkhand by Project Implementing agency “Naya Savera Vikas Kendra” and supported by Caritas India (CI) and Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund (SCiAF) amongst tribal communities. Majority of farmers are with small land holding and are at below poverty line due to agriculture dependency over variable and not in time rain fall with low soil profile which usually resulting into hunger, high poverty level, migration, dilapidation of forest by wood cutting, health degradation etc.

Under the program, climate friendly agrarian innovations have been carried out such as land leveling, Bunds, Gully Plugging, Gravity Water Flow, Ponds, wells for irrigational measures, vermin and waste compost, vermin wash, natural pesticide sprays, Seed Bank, Seed Preservation Process, use of appropriate equipments etc. The communities have been capacitated for collective innovation, farmers’ forum and mobilization for right and entitlement. The alternative and diversified livelihood options (goat, poultry, Pig) have been implemented for vulnerable – widow, differently able, orphan and Land less.

17 Application of Azole, vermin compost, SRI for Padddy cultivation and Organic Vegetable cultivation:

(Mrs. Kharia is harvesting Paddy - SRI, Azola, vermin compost & Mr. Kharia with Organic Tomato Farm) Mr. Bijay Kharia, a small land holding farmer in Village Kurum, with his cultivable land 40 decimal used to get survival of only four months through Kharif paddy cultivation for his five members family. Rest of days, he used to migrate along with family to earn livelihood. This was the level of poverty and survival process of a small land holding farmer before project innovation.

With project intervention, he got another 60 decimal of land as cultivable land through land leveling, went under agriculture training and exposure for organic farming (Azola, vermin composting, vermin wash, natural pesticide spray, SRI paddy cultivation process, seed preservation etc). Now, he is fully engaged in agricultural land for paddy cultivation, vegetable cultivation. His wife is trained and engaged for kitchen garden with organic compost.

The application of Azola gave nitrogen fixation, weed control whereas the Vermin compost, vermin wash, natural pesticide spray gave proper nutrition to plants by enriching the soil texture and SRI (Stratified Root Intensification) process of paddy cultivation gave optimum growth with minimum of water consumption/uses.

Presently, Mr Bijay Kharia along with his wife is earning sufficient paddy crop for round the year, Rs.2800 from vegetable cultivation, Rs.3000 from Pig Farming and now he has stopped his labour migration with these regular supports of institutions and adoption of good agriculture practices.
