Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, has its ghosts of previous peoples that are there no more, and of which only scant traces remain on site. As history goes, the annihilation of its erstwhile Jewish people, who comprised around a third of the population before the war, was both recent and brutally near-complete. It happened in the years 1941 to 1943, when nearly all the city’s Jews were murdered at Ponár (now Paneriai), by the Nazis and their enthusiastic local henchmen. There are diverse ways to “touch and feel” the living Jewish civilization that pulsated through the city’s streets for centuries. By “civilization” we refer to an array of cultures rather than any single one. The vibrant diversity of Jewish Vilna spans the gamut from the most piously religious prayer and study houses and yeshivas to the movements dedicated to modernist Yiddish culture (often affiliated to socialist and social-democratic movements) and to modern Hebrew culture (usually affiliated to the Zionist movement). The Lithuanian-language form Vilnius is the proper way to refer to the city’s present incarnation. But for its classical periods, and right up to the war, the English form Vilna is perhaps most appropri- ate, approximating the name of the city (in alphabetic order!) in Belarusian, Lithuanian, and Russian, and close to the Polish Wilno. In prewar Jewish usage, the notion ‘Vilna’ was itself spelled in three different ways, reflecting three of the Jewish cultures of the city. First, with the word-final Hebrew letter alef (giving Vílno, or in more casual pronunciation Vílne), an ancient Aramaic noun-ending form. And then, from around the turn of the twentieth century, the two competing modernist Jew- ish cultures — and the city became a major international center for both — introduced their own variations on the name of the city. The Yiddishists spelled it with phonetic Yiddish ayin at the end (giving Vílne). The Hebraists respelled the city’s name with the Biblical-style word-final hey, rendered in speech in the “Sephardic” (eventually Israeli) pronunciation, giving: Vílna. And with that, we return to the question of how to fathom today these lost terrains of culture? There are still survivors (alas, fewer with each passing day) of that prewar life. Alshammary* Abstract This study investigates the long-term and short-term relationships between capital market development and economic growth in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) for the period from January 1993 to December 2009. It employs a wide range of vector autoregression (VAR) models to evaluate the importance and impact of capital market development on economic growth. We used real GDP growth rates and None Oil GDP as proxies for economic growth and the stock market index (SMI), the bank credits to the private sector (BCP) and the broad money supply (M2) as proxies for the capital market development. The VAR models indicate a positive and significant long-term causal relationship between capital market development and economic growth. Granger causality tests show that economic growth Granger-cause capital market development and vice versa when using the real GDP growth rate variables. The study implications are as follows. Firstly, investment in real economic activities leads to economic growth. Secondly, the stock market might hinder economic growth due to its volatile and international risk sharing nature, low free-floating share ratio, number of listed companies and the domination of Saudi Individual Stock Trades (SIST) characteristics. Thirdly, policymakers should seek to minimise stock market volatility and fluctuations, increase both the free-floating share ratio and number of listed companies and shift investment domination toward corporate investors by considering its effect on economic growth when formulating economic policies. Fourthly, the banking sector might hinder economic growth due to its lack of small and medium enterprises lending and shareholder concentration issues.

    Ilan Pappé Zionism as Colonialism: A Comparative View of Diluted Colonialism in Asia and Africa Introduction: The Reputation of Colonialism Ever since historiography was professionalized as a scientific discipline, historians have consid- ered the motives for mass human geographical relocations. In the twentieth century, this quest focused on the colonialist settler projects that moved hundreds of thousands of people from Europe into America, Asia, and Africa in the pre- ceding centuries. The various explanations for this human transit have changed considerably in recent times, and this transformation is the departure point for this essay. The early explanations for human relocations were empiricist and positivist; they assumed that every human action has a concrete explanation best found in the evidence left by those who per- formed the action. The practitioners of social his- tory were particularly interested in the question, and when their field of inquiry was impacted by trends in philosophy and linguistics, their conclusion differed from that of the previous generation. The research on Zionism should be seen in light of these historiographical developments. The Zohar explains that the different ways words are arranged according to the aleph -bais symbolize the different aspects of divine providence. A series of words sometimes appears in alphabetical order, the first starting with an aleph , the second with a bais , and so forth. This arrangement symbolizes divine mercy. Sometimes, a series will appear in reverse alphabetical order, called tashrak , the first starting with a tav , the second with a shin , and so forth. This symbolizes strict justice. There is a dispute in the Gemora (Rosh HaShana 10b) regarding when the future Redemption will take place. One opinion is that it will take place in Nissan . The other is that it will take place in Tishrei . According to the Zohar , we can say that the question is whether the Jewish people will be redeemed because they will have earned it or whether the Redemption will be une arned, an act of divine mercy.

Theodor Herzl, a Jewish reporter originally from Vienna, Austria, has been very moved during the case and has written the manuscript of a book that calls for a Jewish national state.     Herzl and Zionism Binyamin Ze'ev Herzl (1860-1904 ) "In Basle I founded the Jewish state...Maybe in five years, certainly in fifty, everyone will realize it.” Theodor (Binyamin Ze'ev) Herzl, the father of modern political Zionism, was born in Budapest in 1860. He was educated in the spirit of the German-Jewish Enlightenment of the period, learning to appreciate secular culture. In 1878 the family moved to Vienna, and in 1884 Herzl was awarded a doctorate of law from the University of Vienna. He became a writer, a playwright and a journalist. Herzl became the Paris correspondent of the influential liberal Vienna newspaper Neue Freie Presse. Herzl first encountered the antisemitism that would shape his life and the fate of the Jews in the twentieth century while studying at the University of Vienna (1882). Later, during his stay in Paris as a journalist, he was brought face-to-face with the problem. At the time, he regarded the Jewish problem as a social issue Herzl at Basle (1898) (Central Zionist Archives) In 1894, Captain Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish officer in the French army, was unjustly accused of treason, mainly because of the prevailing antisemitic atmosphere. Herzl witnessed mobs shouting "Death to the Jews". He resolved that there was only one solution to this antisemitic assault: the mass immigration of Jews to a land that they could call their own. Thus the Dreyfus case became one of the determinants in the genesis of political Zionism. Herzl concluded that antisemitism was a stable Herzl with Zionist delegation en route to Israel (1898) and immutable factor in human society, which (Israel Government Press Office) assimilation did not solve.

Despite Theodor Herzl's proximity in Vienna, Freud remained so aloof from Zionism char he hardly ever expressed himself concerning individual or national Jewish identity. Although on rare occasions he did acknowledge his Jewishness, he renounced nationalistic ideas. One of Freud's dreams is a "royal road" ro his ambivalence roward Judaic traditions. The decisive encounter with Zionism came in January 1898, three weeks after Freud lectured ro the B'nai B'rirh Society in Vienna and only a few months after rhe First Zionist Congress convened in Basel. I hope that you will find it to be both inspiring and informative. In this edition we take a look at the role that music plays in our synagogue lives, focusing in particular on the ‘Umipnei Chatoeinu’ prayer, a festival prayer that has lent itself to some very well-known Cantorial masterpieces. I have also included an obituary for the legendary Chazzan David Werdyger, whose life story itself is profoundly inspirational and whose contribution to Jewish music is unparalleled in the post-war era. To portray his proficiency in both the worlds of Cantorial and Chassidic music I have attached his famous masterpiece Shema Yisroel as well as his recording of Talmud’s Chassidic composition of Lo Tevoshi from the Friday Evening Service. Finally, the ECA is looking forward to holding its annual convention in Budapest, the magnificent Hungarian capital. Booking is open and your attendance is highly recommended. Shavuot is of course the time that we received the Torah at Sinai. Throughout Jewish history the Torah has not been read as prose; rather it has been chanted as song. The verses in the synagogue are intoned melodically according to the appropriate leyning notes; the Mishnah and Talmud are meditated upon and memorized using the ‘learning steiger’ and even studies in ethics have their particular tunes in the study halls of the Yeshiva World.

    Studia Judaica 18 (2015), nr 2 (36), s. 241–269 doi:10.4467/24500100STJ.15.011.4602 SYJONIZM: NOWE SPOJRZENIA Artur Kamczycki Herzl’s Image and the Messianic Idea Abstract: Theodor Herzl (1860–1904) is credited for laying foundations of the political Zionism the aim of which was to be recognizable on the literal as well as visual level. As a result of this postulate Zionism promoted itself by means of vari- ous visual arts and viewed them as an important Zionist medium. In this way, the image of Herzl became an incarnation of Zionism and an expression of its ideas. His figure was a multilayered carrier showing the ideology’s evolution and provid- ing the point of departure for many motifs and iconographic themes employed by the movement. One of them is the so-called Messianic theme that can be derived from the Zionist projection of the leader’s image. Although Herzl is not directly portrayed as the Messiah, there are certain elements implied in his images that drove the development of his Messianic myth. Herzl’s image, personality, politics and his ability to wake up the Jewish masses from a “deep slumber” by bringing up their “hidden powers,” all evoked associations with the Messiah. Mythical and idealistic elements as well as emotions connected with this figure were mostly focused around the Messianic message.
