This year’s luminaries are composers J. Fred Coots & Robert Allen, mathematicians Richard Courant & Kurt Friedrichs, “father of talk radio” Barry Gray, game show host Monty Hall, baseball player Willie Mays, musician Don Mclean, composer Alan Menken, actor Richard Roundtree, playwright Robert Sherwood, transportation magnate and Glen Island Resort developer John Starin, actress Frances Sternhagen, and film pioneers Edwin & Gertrude Thanhauser. The New Rochelle Walk of Fame, installed in 2011 in Ossie Davis Park at Library Green, is a unique tribute to nationally notable individuals with distinct ties to New Rochelle. Each inductee is memorialized with a 20” x 14” full color historical interpretive sign telling his or her story in words and graphics. The Walk is a micro history of America in a nutshell as reflected in the lives of New Rochelle’s famous sons and daughters, representing the arts, business, politics, education, the media, entertainment and sports. The signs are strategically located in the gardens lining the Library Green pathway and were created and funded by former resident and historian Roderick Kennedy Jr., working in partnership with the City of New Rochelle and the Downtown Business Improvement District. A list of previous inductees follows below. Thank you, President Hennessy. t is a great honor to be asked to give the Commencement address I at my alma mater. Although I have two degrees from Stanford, I still feel a bit like an interloper on this exquisitely beautiful cam- pus. A person never really escapes his or her childhood. At heart I’m still a working-class kid—half Italian, half Mexican— from L.A., or more precisely from Hawthorne, a city that most of this audience knows only as the setting of Quentin Tarantino’s 2 Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown—two films that capture the ineffa- ble charm of my hometown. Today is Father’s Day, so I hope you will indulge me for begin- ning on a personal note. I am the first person in my family ever to attend college, and I owe my education to my father, who sacri- ficed nearly everything to give his four children the best education possible. My dad had a fairly hard life. He never spoke English until he went to school. He barely survived a plane crash in World War II. He worked hard, but never had much success, except with his family. When I was about 12, my dad told me that he hoped I would go to Stanford, a place I had never heard of. For him, Stanford repre- sented every success he had missed yet wanted for his children.

This year’s theme is “Be a Star in Someone’s Life.” The “Kick-Off” is the launching point of the campaign, designed to motivate staff members to begin thinking about contributing to their favorite organizations, or to consider new charities that reach out and help others. A Navy Color Guard will open the event with pomp and presentation of the colors in a glitzy Hollywood setting, in keeping with the “be-a-star” theme. The Library has invited as a motivational speaker Tom Morris Jr., a segment producer for “America’s Most Wanted,” a FOX television network crime show. With a bachelor’s degree in mass communications from Norfolk State University (1980), Morris has worked as a print and broadcast journalist, a communications strategist for the Prince Georges County Economic Development Corporation, and as an antiterrorist security specialist for an Embassy Task Group.
