For each Legislative Assembly electorate, details of the total primary and two-candidate preferred vote are provided. Where appropriate, a two-party preferred count is also included. The format for the results is as follows: First Count: For each candidate, the total primary vote received is shown. Percentage votes are calculated as a percentage of the formal vote for each electorate. Swing is calculated by subtracting the percentage vote received by a party at the 1997 election from the percentage received at the 2001 election. Where the parties contesting the district differ from the 1997 election, „ghost‟ candidates (indicated by “….”) have been included representing candidates not contesting the current election. As a result, all primary swings add to zero, subject to rounding errors. All votes for the 1997 election have been adjusted to take account of the redistribution. Final Count: Represents the two-candidate preferred count after the final distribution of preferences in an electorate. Two-candidate preferred percentages are calculated by dividing the two-candidate preferred vote for a candidate by the total formal vote. Two-candidate preferred swings are shown compared to the results of the 1997 election. Where the party composition of the final two candidates differs from the 1997 election (eg Braitling), a ghost candidate appears, and three swing figures are shown. Separate two-party preferred counts are also included in several electorates. All votes for the 1997 election have been adjusted to take account of the redistribution. Two-Candidate Preferred versus Two-Party Preferred Results The two-candidate preferred count for an electorate is defined as the final tally after the exclusion and distribution as preferences of votes from all other candidates. At each stage of the count, the candidate with the least votes is excluded, and his or her votes are distributed to candidates remaining in the count based on the voter's preferences as filled in on the ballot paper. To achieve victory, a candidate must receive more than 50% of the vote remaining in the count. The two-party preferred count represents a distribution of preferences between candidates representing the Labor Party and the Country Liberal Party. Candidates are again excluded based on lowest progressive vote, though at some point the second lowest candidate is excluded to retain candidates representing Labor and the Coalition. In most cases, the two-party preferred count will be the same as the two-candidate preferred count. The Northern Territory only carries out the formal distribution of preferences described above when no candidate achieves 50% of the primary vote. At the 2001 election, three seats had only two candidates and another 13 seats saw one candidate achieve 50% of the vote on the primary vote tally. Formal preference distributions were required in only nine electorates. A later two-party preferred distribution of preferences was carried out for information purposes in all electorates. This has been used in electorates with no preference count. In Arafura, Braitling and Nelson, the 2-candidate count involving Independents, and the later two-party preferred count, have both been used in analysis. Note that in the electorates with two CLP candidates, Arnhem and MacDonnell, CLP primary votes have been simply added together rather than a preference distribution performed. Labor's vote after preferences would have been slightly higher under a normal distribution of preferences. Indication of Political Party Affiliation Political parties are not registered in the Northern Territory and party affiliation is not shown on the ballot paper. However, the Northern territory Electoral Office collects data on the party affiliation of candidates and it includes affiliation in results. All affiliations shown are those used by the Electoral Office. Antony Green – ABC Election Unit 1 2001 Northern Territory Election Sitting Member Indicators An asterisk "*" is used to indicate any candidate who is currently a sitting member of the Legislative Assembly. In the case of John Elferink in MacDonnell and Paul Henderson in Wanguri, both are shown as sitting members despite the notional party status of their electorates changing because of the redistribution. In Braitling, Loraine Braham is shown as the sitting MP. However, her historical vote has been allocated to the Country Liberal Party candidate. Details of the redistribution The following table shows the notional party status and margin of all seats following the electoral redistribution, based on re-allocating votes from the 1997 election.
