  • Bad Girls: Agency, Revenge, and Redemption in Contemporary Drama
e Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy Bad Girls: Agency, Revenge, and Redemption in Contemporary Drama Courtney Watson, Ph.D. Radford University Roanoke, Virginia, United States [email protected] ABSTRACT Cultural movements including #TimesUp and #MeToo have contributed momentum to the demand for and development of smart, justified female criminal characters in contemporary television drama. These women are representations of shifting power dynamics, and they possess agency as they channel their desires and fury into success, redemption, and revenge. Building on works including Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl and Netflix’s Orange is the New Black, dramas produced since 2016—including The Handmaid’s Tale, Ozark, and Killing Eve—have featured the rise of women who use rule-breaking, rebellion, and crime to enact positive change. Keywords: #TimesUp, #MeToo, crime, television, drama, power, Margaret Atwood, revenge, Gone Girl, Orange is the New Black, The Handmaid’s Tale, Ozark, Killing Eve Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy 37 Watson From the recent popularity of the anti-heroine in novels and films like Gone Girl to the treatment of complicit women and crime-as-rebellion in Hulu’s adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale to the cultural watershed moments of the #TimesUp and #MeToo movements, there has been a groundswell of support for women seeking justice both within and outside the law. Behavior that once may have been dismissed as madness or instability—Beyoncé laughing wildly while swinging a baseball bat in her revenge-fantasy music video “Hold Up” in the wake of Jay-Z’s indiscretions comes to mind—can be examined with new understanding.

This version expands upon the issues of individualism under neoliberalism through an examination of ways that the protagonist portrays a neoliberal subjectivity. It has been accepted for inclusion in Neoliberalism and Media by an authorized administrator of OpenSIUC. For more information, please contact [email protected]. Selling Nostalgia: Mad Men , Postmodernism and Neoliberalism Deborah Tudor Fredric Jameson identified postmodernism as the “cultural logic of late capitalism” in his 1984 essay of the same name. Late capitalism, or neoliberalism, produces a society characterized by return to free market principles of the 19 th century and cultivates a strong return to rugged individualism. (Kapur) Postmodern cultural logic emphasizes visual representations of culture as a dominant cultural determinant. It is this framework that opens a discussion of Mad Men, a series that uses a mid century advertising firm as a filter for a history that is reduced to recirculated images. In Norman Denzin’s discussion of film and postmodernism, he examines how our media culture’s embodies neoliberal, postmodern notions of life and self.

  • The Cross-Country/Cross-Class Drives of Don Draper/Dick Whitman: Examining Mad Men’S Hobo Narrative
Journal of Working-Class Studies Volume 2 Issue 1, 2017 Forsberg The Cross-Country/Cross-Class Drives of Don Draper/Dick Whitman: Examining Mad Men’s Hobo Narrative Jennifer Hagen Forsberg, Clemson University Abstract This article examines how the critically acclaimed television show Mad Men (2007- 2015) sells romanticized working-class representations to middle-class audiences, including contemporary cable subscribers. The television drama’s lead protagonist, Don Draper, exhibits class performatively in his assumed identity as a Madison Avenue ad executive, which is in constant conflict with his hobo-driven born identity of Dick Whitman. To fully examine Draper/Whitman’s cross-class tensions, I draw on the American literary form of the hobo narrative, which issues agency to the hobo figure but overlooks the material conditions of homelessness. I argue that the hobo narrative becomes a predominant but overlooked aspect of Mad Men’s period presentation, specifically one that is used as a technique for self-making and self- marketing white masculinity in twenty-first century U.S. cultural productions. Keywords Cross-class tensions; television; working-class representations The critically acclaimed television drama Mad Men (2007-2015) ended its seventh and final season in May 2015. The series covered the cultural and historical period of March 1960 to November 1970, and followed advertising executive Don Draper and his colleagues on Madison Avenue in New York City. As a text that shows the political dynamism of the mid-century to a twenty-first century audience, Mad Men has wide-ranging interpretations across critical camps. For example, in ‘Selling Nostalgia: Mad Men, Postmodernism and Neoliberalism,’ Deborah Tudor suggests that the show offers commitments to individualism through a ‘neoliberal discourse of style’ which stages provocative constructions of reality (2012, p.

  • Adam Stier, Ties That Bind.Pdf
Ties That Bind: American Fiction and the Origins of Social Network Analysis DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Adam Charles Stier, M.A. Graduate Program in English The Ohio State University 2013 Dissertation Committee: Dr. David Herman, Advisor Dr. Brian McHale Dr. James Phelan Copyright by Adam Charles Stier 2013 Abstract Under the auspices of the digital humanities, scholars have recently raised the question of how current research on social networks might inform the study of fictional texts, even using computational methods to “quantify” the relationships among characters in a given work. However, by focusing on only the most recent developments in social network research, such criticism has so far neglected to consider how the historical development of social network analysis—a methodology that attempts to identify the rule-bound processes and structures underlying interpersonal relationships—converges with literary history. Innovated by sociologists and social psychologists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, including Georg Simmel (chapter 1), Charles Horton Cooley (chapter 2), Jacob Moreno (chapter 3), and theorists of the “small world” phenomenon (chapter 4), social network analysis emerged concurrently with the development of American literary modernism. Over the course of four chapters, Ties That Bind demonstrates that American modernist fiction coincided with a nascent “science” of social networks, such that we can discern striking parallels between emergent network-analytic procedures and the particular configurations by which American authors of this period structured (and more generally imagined) the social worlds of their stories.

The Presence of Performance and the Stakes of Serial Drama: Accrual, Transience, Companionship Elliott Logan MPhil (University of Queensland, 2013) BA, Hons (University of Queensland, 2009) BA (University of Queensland, 2007) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2018 School of Communication and Arts Abstract This thesis shows how performance is a critically neglected but crucial aspect of serial television drama as an art form. One of serial drama’s obvious storytelling attractions is its ability to involve viewers in relationships between characters over long periods of time. Such involvement takes place through a recurring structure of episodes and seasons, whose unfolding reflects the extensive, ongoing history through which interpersonal bonds form and develop, deepen and decay. The characters we watch onscreen are embodied and performed by actors. Television studies, however, has persistently overlooked screen performance, hampering appreciation of serial drama’s affinity with long-term relationships as a resource for aesthetic significance. Redressing such neglect, this thesis directs new critical attention to expressive stylistic relationships between serial form, screen performance, and the subject of companionship in some recent US serial dramas. The focus of that attention is a particular aesthetic quality: the provisional, which emerges through serial drama’s distinctive tension between permanence and transience. In the first chapter, I argue that the provisional is central to an affinity between screen performance, seriality in television drama, and companionship as an aspect of human life. Chapters Two and Three then show how the art of the provisional in particular series has been underappreciated due to television studies’ neglect of performance and expressiveness as dimensions of serial form in television fiction.

  • 1 Television As Psychical Object: Mad Men and the Value Of
Television as psychical object: Mad Men and the value of psychoanalysis for television scholarship Caroline Bainbridge Address for correspondence: Dept. Media, Culture and Language University of Roehampton Roehampton Lane London SW15 5SL [email protected] Abstract: Claims that Mad Men (2007-15) is an obedient postfeminist text overlook the drama’s images of both women and the history of feminism and its potential to impact on contemporary understandings of gender politics. Mad Men can be seen as a psychological object, helping viewers to explore links between their own experience and that of characters on screen as the narrative unfolds. Making links between the social re-emergence of feminist awareness, the drama’s representations of second wave feminism, and a psychoanalytic understanding of mourning, I suggest that that a return to psychoanalytic methodologies has the potential to enrich television scholarship. Author Biog: Caroline Bainbridge is Professor of Culture and Psychoanalysis at the University of Roehampton. Her books include The Cinema of Lars von Trier (2007) and A Feminine Cinematics (2008), co-edited volumes such as Television and Psychoanalysis (2013) and Media and the Inner World (2014), and curated special editions of journals such as Psychoanalysis, Culture and Society and Free Associations. She is film editor for The International Journal of Psychoanalysis. 1 With its associated opportunities for viewers to engage with television drama via a plethora of “on-demand” services, “new” television provides scope to re-visit questions about the psychodynamics of viewing experience in the context of television scholarship. This is demonstrated in debates about binge watching and its links to emerging interfaces of media consumption (Brunsdon, 2010; Jenner, 2015; Matrix, 2014; Perks, 2015).

A TEXTUAL ANALYSIS OF FEMINIST MOTIFS DETERMINED BY PRODUCTION VALUES IN MAD MEN By COURTNEY ALLESSIO A Senior Honors Thesis Submitted to the Department of Communication of Boston College Thesis Advisor: Dr. William E. Stanwood May 2011 ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First and foremost, I would like to thank my advisor, Dr. William Stanwood, who was with me for every step of this process. His dedication and unending support in this endeavor gave me the confidence to pursue and complete my work. I thank my friends who have helped me to work harder, stay calmer, and feel good when it was all over. To the creators of Mad Men, thank you. You are responsible for my Sunday primetime addiction and a good reason to write a thesis. And finally, I express my deepest gratitude to my family. You have always encouraged me to push myself to my outermost limits on with my quest for knowledge. iii ABSTRACT The textual analysis of season four, episode one of Mad Men entitled “Public Relations” study the productions values in terms of feminist motifs. By using social codes developed by Leed-Hurwitz and Barthes’ five systems of meaning in semiotics, observations are made about the elements of the mise-en-scène in relation to the gender roles present in the narrative.
