Walking on water The making of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s The Floating Piers

From June 18 to July 3, 2016, 100 kilometers east of Milan and 200 kilometers west of Venice, thousands of people will walk on water. The Floating Piers by Christo will deploy 70,000 square meters of shimmering yellow fabric above a modular floating dock system of 200,000 high-density polyethylene cubes to create a temporary, three-kilometer walkway across the surface of Lake Iseo, connecting the mainland to the islands of Monte Isola and San Paolo. The piers will be 16 meters wide and approximately 50 centimeters high, with sloping sides. Visitors will experience the artwork by walking from Sulzano to Monte Isola and over to San Paolo. The mountains surrounding the lake will also offer a bird’s-eye view of the project, revealing unnoticed angles and perspectives. The Floating Piers will be Christo’s first large scale project since Christo and Jeanne- Claude realized The Gates in 2005 and will draw upon Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s established history of projects in Italy, including Wrapped Fountain and Wrapped Medieval Tower in Spoleto, 1968; Wrapped Monuments in Milan, 1970; and The Wall – Wrapped Roman Wall in Rome, 1973–74. This book presents rich photographic coverage of Floating Piers alongside Christo’s sketches, models, documents and designs, revealing the process behind this water- borne work of art. Incorporating everything from approval procedures to the manu- Christo and Jeanne-Claude. facture of fabric and anchoring elements, it testifies not only to Christo’s unique The Floating Piers. Project for Lake Iseo, Italy, 2014–2016 creative imagination but also to the immense technical, bureaucratic, and logistical Photographs by Wolfgang Volz feats that allowed the concept to take float. Elevating a primarily illustrative, mass-production medium to the status of fine art, the woodblock revival set a formal precedent for Expressionism while democratizing an art for all. It has been almost a generation since Sebastião Salgado first published Exodus but the story it tells, of fraught human movement around the globe, has changed little in 16 years. The push and pull factors may shift, the nexus of conflict relocates from Rwanda to Syria, but the people who leave their homes tell the same tale: deprivation, hardship, and glimmers of hope, plotted along a journey of great psychological, as well as physical, toil. Salgado spent six years with migrant peoples, visiting more than 35 countries to doc- ument displacement on the road, in camps, and in overcrowded city slums where new arrivals often end up. His project includes Latin Americans entering the United States, Jews leaving the former Soviet Union, Kosovars fleeing into Albania, the Hutu refugees of Rwanda, as well as the first “boat people” of Arabs and sub-Saharan Africans trying to reach Europe across the Mediterranean sea. His images feature those who know where they are going and those who are simply in flight, relieved to be alive and uninjured enough to run. The faces he meets present dignity and com- passion in the most bitter of circumstances, but also the many ravaged marks of vio- lence, hatred, and greed. Opposite: Rio Bonito do Iguaçu, State of Paraná, Brazil, 1996 Innocence on the run A new edition of Salgado’s classic work The Children. Refugees and Migrants

In every crisis situation, children are the greatest victims. Physically weak, they are often the first to succumb to hunger, disease, and dehydration. Innocent to the work- ings and failings of the world, they are unable to understand why there is danger, why there are people who want to hurt them, or why they must leave, perhaps quite sud- denly, and abandon their schools, their friends, and their home. In this book Sebastião Salgado presents 90 portraits of the youngest exiles, migrants, and refugees. His subjects are from different countries, victims to different crises, but they are all on the move, and all under the age of 15. Through his extensive refugee project, what struck Salgado about these boys and girls was not only the implicit innocence in their suffering but also their radiant reserves of energy and enthusiasm, even in the most miserable of circumstances. From roadside refuges in Angola and Burundi to city slums in Brazil and sprawling camps in Lebanon and Iraq, the chil- dren remained children: they were quick to laugh as much as to cry, they played soc- cer, splashed in dirty water, got up to mischief with friends, and were typically ecstatic at the prospect of being photographed. The photographs do not try to make a statement about their subjects’ feelings, or to spell out the particulars of their health, educational, and housing deficits. Rather, the collection allows 90 children to look out at the viewer with all the candor of youth Sebastião Salgado. Children and all the uncertainty of their future. As urban living intensifies in density and numbers, the city landscape expands both outwards and upwards. Architects and urban designers craft new and experimental structures while also investigating existing buildings for potential reinvention or expansion. In particular, the roof of a building, once a perfunctory structural element, is now a city space in and of itself, beloved for the capacity to eke out further room for living or to craft inspiring refuges away from the bustle of the metropolis. This international selection of urban rooftops catalogs a new urban dimension. Through over 50 bars, restaurants, temporary art installations, and gardens, it testi- fies to the variety of intelligent and exuberant designs that grace city summits from Sydney to Hong Kong, Oslo to Chicago. At the turn of the 20th century, architecture took an imaginative leap. As new con- struction materials and technologies met such far-flung stimuli as the Far East, XL Nirvana, and the unleashed unconscious of Freudian psychoanalysis, buildings by the likes of Gaudí, Horta, Hoffmann, Loos, and Mackintosh instilled structure with the sinuous lines of nature, surfaces with a fairy tale shimmer, and spaces with an ethereal wash of light or shadowy, mysterious hush. In this dramatic portfolio, architectural photographer Keiichi Tahara travels across Europe to present the finest examples of this Art Nouveau architecture. From the glamorous facade of the Grand Hotel Europa to the elaborate sweep of a staircase or the perfect poise of a single chandelier, Tahara captures the intricate details as much as the holistic spatial effects of these ambitious, marvelous structures. With an eye attuned to the style’s organic detailing, he surveys its floral patterns, vine-like balus- trades, and the soft, hollow interiors that seem to summon us into some primordial place. Drenched in sunshine or draped in dramatic shadows, Tahara’s pictures excel in evok- ing not only the unrivalled aura of these buildings but also the particular, fin-de-siècle spirit of their age, caught on the axel of a century, and characterized by reflection and yearning, as much as technological, philosophical, and political advance. Gala dinner Salvador Dalí’s surrealist cookbook Facsimile edition of a great classic! “Les diners de Gala is uniquely devoted to the pleasures of taste … If you are a disciple of one of those calorie-counters who turn the joys of eating into a form of punishment, close this book at once; it is too lively, too aggressive, and far too impertinent for you.” —Salvador Dalí

Food and surrealism make perfect bedfellows: sex and lobsters, collage and cannibal- ism, the meeting of a swan and a toothbrush on a pastry case. The opulent dinner par- ties thrown by Salvador Dalí (1904–1989) and his wife and muse, Gala (1894–1982) were the stuff of legend. Luckily for us, Dalí published a cookbook in 1973,Les diners de Gala, which reveals some of the sensual, imaginative, and exotic elements that made up their notorious gatherings. This reprint features all 136 recipes over 12 chapters, specially illustrated by Dalí, and organized by meal courses, including aphrodisiacs. The illustrations and recipes are accompanied by Dalí’s extravagant musings on subjects such as dinner conversa- tion: “The jaw is our best tool to grasp philosophical knowledge.” All these rich recipes can be cooked at home, although some will require practiced skill and a well-stocked pantry. Men love girls who love girls 125 years of faux lesbian fantasy photography

Straight men have always had a thing for lesbians, or more correctly, for essentially straight women willing to do other women for their viewing pleasure. When a man sees two women together there’s no jealousy that another man’s getting the woman he can’t, as with heterosexual porn, just the joy of everything he likes times two, and the unshakable fantasy that women that wild would surely invite him to join in. Yes, it’s unrealistic, but that doesn’t make it any less popular, and photographers have been documenting these faux lesbian couplings for over 100 years. Lesbians for Men is the first photo book to acknowledge such photos are created to fuel male fantasy, to explore the reasons, and to trace their origins back to 1890, and forward to the present day. Over 300 photos, in black & white and color, celebrate the obliging women who’ve kissed, fondled, and fulfilled men’s lesbian cravings, in images created for pornogra- phy as well as “fine art.” Contemporary photographers include Nobuyoshi Araki, Guido Argentini, Bruno Bisang, Bob Carlos Clarke, Ed Fox, Ren Hang, Petter Hegre, Richard Kern, Will Santillo, and Kishin Shinoyama. Subjects range from simply affectionate to everything two women can do when they want to please male viewers as much as each other. In 1945 Bob Mizer began taking photographs of strapping young men on Muscle Beach in Venice, California. In December of that year he formed the Athletic Model Guild to market his photos, and “physique photography” was born. Before Mizer there were bodybuilders and men who photographed them, but AMG photos, even those of the same men, were different, subtly provocative, discretely aimed at a gay audience. They weren’t nude, but showed as much as the law allowed in 1945. In 1951 Mizer launched Physique Pictorial, America’s first indisputably gay maga- zine, bringing his photos of top bodybuilders to grateful readers worldwide. By the late ’50s Mizer had photographed over 1,000 men, moving from the beach to his quirky Los Angeles studio, where he introduced props including Greek columns, Roman headdresses, rear projection, and famously, his mother’s glassware, for theat- rical Hollywood effect. In 1957 he published a catalog featuring all his men, titled 1000 Model Directory. In 1968 a second 1000 Model Directory followed, with the men photographed in the intervening years. The little 98-page books became instant collectibles, but the photos were so small, 12 to a page, that they were as frustrating to view as they were titillating. Gift of the Kay Nielsen Memorial Fund Night visions A fine art portfolio of Kay Nielsen’s sumptuous A Thousand and One Nights XXL In the late 1910s, in a Europe ravaged by World War I, Danish illustrator Kay Nielsen put the finishing touches on his illustrations ofA Thousand and One Nights. The results are considered masterpieces of early 20th-century illustration: bursting with sumptuous colors of deep blues, reds, and gold leaf, and evoking all the magic of this legendary collection of Indo-Persian and Arabic folktales, compiled between the 8th and 13th centuries. In the financially strapped postwar climate, however, publishers retreated from Nielsen’s project and the publication never happened. A rising star, Nielsen moved on to other work, and the spectacular pen, ink, and watercolor images of this world heri- tage classic remained under lock and key for 40 years. Published just once in the 1970s, the illustrations were rescued from oblivion after Nielsen’s death in 1957 and are now held by the UCLA Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, the Art Institute of Chicago, and in two private collections. Published for the first time ever in five colors including gold, this unique presentation Cover not final of fine art prints revives all 21 strikingly beautiful illustrations reproduced directly from Nielsen’s original watercolors−the only complete set of his beloved illustrations Kay Nielsen’s A Thousand and One Nights Noel Daniel to have survived. Opposite: Quai des Orfèvres, 1er arrondissement, 1910 Paris promenade Eugène Atget’s unique city portrait

A flaneur and photographer at once, Eugène Atget (1857–1927) was obsessed with walking the streets. After trying his hand at painting and acting, the native of Libourne turned to photography and moved to Paris. He supplied studies for painters, architects, and stage designers, but became enraptured by what he called “docu- ments” of the city and its environs. His scenes rarely included people, but rather the architecture, landscape, and artifacts that made up the societal and cultural stage. Atget was not particularly renowned during his lifetime but in the 1920s came to the attention of the Dada and Surrealist avant-garde through Man Ray. Four of his images, with their particular fusion of mimesis and mystery, appeared in the surreal- ist journal, La Révolution Surréaliste, while Ray and much of his artistic circle pur- chased Atget prints. His fame grew after his death, with several articles and a mono- graph by Berenice Abbott. Several leading photographers, including Walker Evans and Bill Brandt, have since acknowledged their debt to Atget. This fresh TASCHEN edition gathers some 500 photographs from the Atget archives to celebrate his oustanding eye for the urban environment and evocation of a Paris gone by. When German photographer Peter Lindbergh shot five young models in downtown New York City in 1989, he produced not only the iconic British Vogue January 1990 cover but also the birth certificate of the supermodel. The image didn’t just bring revered faces together for the first time; it marked the beginning of a new fashion era and a new understanding of female beauty. Coinciding with his major retrospective at the Kunsthal in Rotterdam, The Nether lands, this book gathers more than 400 images from four decades of Lindbergh’s pho- tography to celebrate his unique and gamechanging fashion storytelling. Raw and seductive at once, his trademark monochrome pictures are marked by a romantic and narrative vision which brought a new vision and artistry to the fashion world. Whether in single portraits or poetic compositions of figure and landscape, the imag- ery is inflected by cinematic language and by a play with female archetypes as his sub- jects adopt the guise of dancers, actresses, heroines, and femme fatales. At the same time, Lindbergh brings a humanist approach to photography, privileging natural and authentic beauty in an era of pervasive retouching, capturing spirit and personality as much as looks, and celebrating the elegance and sensuality of older women. In a testimony to Lindbergh’s illustrious status in the fashion world, his images are contextualised by commentaries from such runway royalty as John Paul Gaultier, Peter Lindbergh. Nicole Kidman, Grace Coddington, Cindy Crawford, and Anna Wintour, who chose A Different History of Fashion Thierry-Maxime Loriot Lindbergh to her first US Vogue cover. Twisted brilliance The complete catalogue of Egon Schiele, 1909–1918

Over the course of his short life, Austrian artist Egon Schiele (1890–1918) blazed a turbulent Expressionist trail. A child prodigy, young rebel, and chronic provocateur, XL he caused uproar among the establishment with his contorted lines, distorted bodies, and explicit eroticism and continues to startle to this day with his unflinching images of himself and his nude, splayed subjects.

Schiele reveled in stylistic freedom and shock. In the twilight years of the Austro- Complete Paintings Hungarian Empire, he swiftly abandoned classical figuration for a distorted and exag- 1909-1918 gerated physicality that rendered emotional and sexual truth rather than refined beauty ideals. His subjects are elongated, angular, and twisted. Ribs protrude from skeletal forms. Fingers and limbs contort, skin is sickly yellow, and eyes are dark afraid. The body becomes the locus of human drama and anguish. Schiele’s only reprieve was the promise of sex. Like no other early 20th-century artist, he laid geni- talia bare, bringing some of the most candid renderings of the vagina in Western art history, as well as scenes of masturbation and lesbian sex. Schiele’s life ended with the same drama and emotional turmoil that defined his work, dying of Spanish influenza in 1918 just after his pregnant wife Edith succumbed Schiele to the same pandemic. His legacy, despite the brevity of his life, is exceptional. His influence can be traced through the work of countless 20th-century masters, from Egon Schiele. Francis Bacon and Otto Muehl to Julian Schnabel, David Bowie, and Tracey Emin. Complete Paintings, 1909–1918 Tobias G. Microbial marvels Ernst Haeckel, the 19th-century pioneer who captured the artistic beauty of the natural world

Ernst Haeckel (1834–1919) was a German-born biologist, naturalist, evolutionist, artist, philosopher, and doctor, who spent his life researching flora and fauna from the XXL highest mountaintops to deepest ocean. A vociferous supporter and developer of Darwin’s theories of evolution, he denounced religious dogma, abandoned an early career in medicine, authored philosophical treatises, gained a doctorate in zoology, and coined scientific terms which have passed into common usage, including ecology. Haeckel’s colossal legacy has fascinated, and polarized generations. But what was at the heart of his extraordinary life’s work? Rather like his intellectual forebear, Ernst Alexander von Humboldt, Haeckel was motivated not only to discover but also to explain. To do this, he created hundreds of detailed drawings and watercolors, of his Haeckel findings which he published in successive volumes during the 20th century, including several marine organism collections and the majestic Kunstformen der Natur (Art Forms in Nature), which could serve as the cornerstone of Haeckel’s entire life project. Like a meticulous visual encyclopedia of living things, Haeckel’s work was as remark- able for its graphic precision and meticulous shading as for its understanding of organic evolution and cellular development. From bats to the box jellyfish, lizards to lichen, and spider legs to sea anemones, he emphasized the essential symmetries and order of nature, and found biological beauty in even the most unlikely of crea- Ernst Haeckel tures. In this book, we celebrate the scientific, artistic, and environmental importance of Haeckel’s work, with a collection of prints from several of his most important tomes on marine biology, including Die Radiolarien, Monographie der Medusen, Die Kalkschwämme, and Kunstformen der Natur. Back in the days when the information age was a distant dream and the world a more mysterious place, National Geographic began its mission to reveal the wonders of XL history, popular science, and culture to eager audiences around the globe. Since that 1888 launch, the world has changed; empires have risen and crumbled and a galaxy of information is today only the click of a mouse away. But National Geographic endures; its calm, authoritative voice is respected as ever amid the surfeit of data in our daily lives. In this new anthology, TASCHEN and National Geographic gather the magazine’s best infographics of the past 128 years. Through seven sections—History, The Planet, Being Human, Animal World, World of Plants, Science and Technology, and Space —we encounter the rise and fall of the Roman Empire, the mysterious origins of the Easter Island statues, Cleopatra’s Alexandria and a history of Hawaiian surfboarding, all distilled in expert, accessible graphic form. We discover how our genetic patterns have been pieced together over the years or how hip-hop emerged as a cultural heavy- weight; we get to grips with global warming, and explore our ever-expanding study of an ever-expanding universe. With an essay by Nigel Holmes, charting the evolution of National Geographic over the decades and its pioneering use of graphics, as well as four fold-outs mimicking National Geographic Infographics original pull-outs or inserts in the magazine, the book stands as a defining record Julius Wiedemann Hardcover with fold-outs, 9.7 x 14.6 in., of one of the world’s best-known publications as much as it is a beautifully presented 480 pp. repository of discovery and learning. Opposite: The Young Fool and the Sea, 2010. © Jamie Hewlett Gorilla thriller Inside the mind of Jamie Hewlett

From the legendary Tank Girl to live-action animations with art-pop noisemakers Gorillaz, dabblings with Chinese contemporary opera to an exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery, artist Jamie Hewlett is one of the most energetic figures of contemporary pop culture. With influences ranging from hip hop to zombie slasher movies, Hewlett emerged in the mid 1990s as cocreator of the zeitgeist-defining Tank Girl comic. With then- roommate, Blur frontman Damon Albarn, he went on to create the unique cartoon band Gorillaz, a virtual pop group of animated characters, which recorded four studio albums and mounted breathtaking live spectacles. Since then, Hewlett has continued to collaborate with Albarn on projects including an elaborate staging of the Chinese novel Monkey: Journey to the West by Wu Cheng’en, complete with circus acrobats, Shaolin monks, and Chinese singers. In 2006, he was named ’Designer of the Year’ by the Design Museum in London, and in 2009, Hewlett and Albarn won a Bafta for their Monkey animated sequence for the Beijing Olympic Games. More recently, an exhibition of prints at the Saatchi Gallery in London demonstrated an exciting new direction in Hewlett’s practice. This new TASCHEN edition, Hewlett’s first major monograph, illustrates this thrill- ing creative journey with over 400 artworks from the Tank Girl era through Gorillaz Jamie Hewlett and up to the present day. Through stories, characters, strips, and sketches, we trace Julius Wiedemann Hardcover, 9.8 x 12.5 in., 392 pp. Hewlett’s exceptional capacity for invention and celebrate a polymath artist who 978-3-8365-6093-1 refuses to rest on his laurels, or to be pigeonholed into a particular practice. $ 59.99

Sound art An unprecedented collection of artists’ record covers from the 1950s to today

Since the dawn of modernism, visual and music production have had a particularly intimate relationship. From Henri Matisse’s Music (1910) and Hugo Ball’s sound poem “Karawane” (1916) to Wassily Kandinsky’s visual “chords,” the 20th century saw ever more fertile exchange between sounds and shapes, marks and melodies, and different fields of composition and performance. In this unique anthology of artists’ record covers, we discover the rhythm of this par- ticular cultural history. The book presents over 600 album and record covers given the artistic treatment from the 1950s through to today. Ordered by artist, the covers reveal how modern, postmodern, Pop Art, street art, and conceptual practice have all informed this collateral field of visual production and supported the mass distribution of music with defining imagery that swiftly and suggestively evokes an aural encounter. Along the way, we find Jean-Michel Basquiat’s urban hieroglyphs for his own Tartown record label, Banksy’s stenciled graffiti for Blur, Damien Hirst’s synecdoche skull for The Hours, and a skewered Salvador Dalí butterfly on Jackie Gleason’s Lonesome Echo. The covers are featured with succinct analyses and each with a fact sheet listing Art Record Covers Julius Wiedemann the artist, performer, album name, label, year of release, and information on the origi- Hardcover, 11.5 x 11.5 in., 552 pp. nal artwork. What’s wrong in Tinseltown? The dark side of Los Angeles, 1920–1960

In the years following World War I, Los Angeles was a city transforming itself from a backwater town to a gleaming metropolis of the future. But along the way, a tarnished patina began to coat its ever-more glamorous façade. As thousands flocked to the city with their dreams and desires, so too came get-rich-quick schemes, phony religions, organized crime, and rife corruption. A visual history like no other, this book brings together images from archives, museums, newspaper photo morgues, private collections, and the author’s own extensive image library to reveal the true grit, grime, and sheer horror stories of Los Angeles of the 1920s to 1950s. Through the back alleys, gin joints, roadhouses, casino barges, tattoo parlors, gambling dens, nightclubs, and the most brutal crime scenes, we uncover a city crawling with murder and mayhem. From the headline Black Dahlia case to unscrupu- lous cops and mayors, this is the flip side of the Southland that inspired journalists, pulp fiction scribes, and Filmland scriptwriters in their creation of noir.
