An appeals court has agreed with an Ohio woman who argued her parking citation should be tossed for lack of a comma. Andrea Cammelleri says she shouldn’t have been issued a citation in 2014 based on the wording of a new law enacted by the village of West Jefferson. The law was intended to prevent vehicles from being parked on city streets longer than 24 hours. The law, as written, says it is illegal to park on a village street “any motor vehicle camper, trailer, farm implement and/or non- motorized vehicle for a continued period of twenty-four hours.” The law should clearly have read “motor vehicle, camper.” But since the comma was missing, Cammelleri argued that her pickup truck did not fit the description and was not applicable. The village says the law’s meaning is clear in context, but Judge Robert Hendrickson of the 12th Ohio District Court of Appeals vacated the charges against Cammelleri, saying, “If the village desires a different reading, it should amend the ordinance and insert a comma.” Dateline: Pennsylvania A race track at the Presque Isle Downs & Casino is making changes to prevent wild deer from inadvertently competing. Officials were forced to cancel several races on Sunday, June 28, when a deer ran in front of horses during the day’s fourth race. Races were also canceled on Monday and Tuesday. “We’re taking this very seriously,” casino vice president and general manager Jeff Favre told reporters. “The last thing we want is a jockey or horse to get hurt due to deer.” A group of five deer interrupted a race on June 22 as well, prompting officials to cancel several races. The track plans to remove nearby bushes and trees in an attempt to keep animals away. In addition, the fence around the track will be raised, and start time on races has been pushed forward to 3:05pm, which will avoid racing at dusk when the deer are more active. a

Garlic makes everything shitty about this sometimes insensitive, destructive and dark world we live in just a little bit brighter and more tolerable. Fired from your job? Eat some garlic . Getting a divorce? Extra garlic on your pizza. Hate your kids? Garlic butter on everything. But garlic isn’t just for binge eating and junk food. Apparently, it can be used in a variety of healthy dishes and hosts properties that could even help your ailing body by treating nasty things like the common cold, flu, low blood sugar and high blood pressure. You know what else kicks ass? Lavender. Lavender smells fucking wonderful, looks gentle and beautiful, and is also used medicinally and spiritually. Norwegian folklore encourages you to put lavender in your pillow case at night if you’ve been experiencing nightmares. Versatile and aromatic, lavender is the sexy partner to garlic’s genius, and the Los Ranchos Growers’ Market (6718 Rio Grande NW) knows how to get down with both. This weekend they will host the annual Garlic and Lavender Festival on Saturday, July 11, SATURDAY from 7am to JULY 11 1pm. In previous years the Los Ranchos Village festival has been Hall a huge success, 6718 Rio Grande NW and offers alibi.com/e/151476 informational 7am to 1pm booths, classes, face painting and, of course, lavender and garlic. here’s something sexy and dangerous about robed occultists performing rituals for old Tgods in the moonlit desert. With the arrival of my digital invitation to this weekend’s public performance of the O.T.O.’s Rite of Mars comes a flood of mental images provided by Hollywood films I’ve seen growing up: hooded figures silhouetted by firelight—long shadows lying in the sand like serpents, disembodied voices droning incantations in dead languages. Of course this is all fantasy. I’ve been to these sorts of things before, and what they don’t show you in Eyes Wide Shut is the scene after the ritual, when the cultists have to go home and throw their robes in the wash before taking the dog out to pee. Under the masks are usually people like the rest of us. But I have to admit a touch of excitement as I drive to the home of Soror Luz, a representative of the local encampment of the Ordo Templi Orientis. The O.T.O. may be one of the most famous occult fraternal organizations of this century and the last, thanks largely to the influence of its one-time leader, Aleister Crowley—the infamous drug- fiend, sodomist and blasphemer. Crowley (which rhymes with “holy” and not “bowely,” as Ozzy would have you believe) was also one of the greatest minds to come out of the 20th century. His influence blasted through popular culture, leaving the ’60s in its wake (Timothy Leary really did claim to be the reincarnated Crowley, and you can find the old sod’s head poking out between Sri Yukteswar and Mae West on Sgt. Pepper . As for the myth that he fed Aldous Huxley his first mouthful of peyote ... the results are still out). Crowley joined the O.T.O. in 1912, back when it was still just another pseudo-Masonic magical order-cum-boys club. Within a couple of years, he was running the show and had implemented his own home-grown religion Rites of Mars performanced by Heart of Blood Thelema as the official creed of the order. As with all initiatory magical groups, there the Subtlety or Force Encampment, and she is a distinct odor of secrecy floating around the tells me there are a couple dozen active The Rites of Eleusis: The O.T.O.’s shadowy center. FOOD | F lash in the pan Chao Down Traditional Asian soup for the soul

BY ARI LEVAUX

early every Asian language includes a word for a certain rice-based gruel that’s Nubiquitous across the world’s largest continent, found virtually anywhere rice is grown. The dish often goes by congee, its Chinese name, and many rice cookers even have a “porridge” or congee setting. This humble bowl of steaming goodness can make for a delicious meal in its own right, but at the same time, it is a blank slate that’s able to go in almost any culinary direction. It is also medicine, craved during times of sickness, hangover or other malaise by those who have grown up with it. Like mom’s chicken soup, congee is a warm, rejuvenating embrace.
