In children’s literature, for example, the relationship between the two age groups tends to be romanticized, featuring their mutual interests in nature, animals, fantasy and storytelling. In this chapter, we explore how the two categories meet in the award-winning drama TV series Mad Men. The aim is to scrutinize the link between childhood and old age, by analyzing how the relationships between a young girl, Sally Draper, and her elderly relatives are played out. Exploring key scenes, we show how the companionship between children and the elderly is constructed as rewarding for both parties, yet as provocative and challenging rather than romantic and harmless. -

Former FCC chairman Newton N. Minow, in a 1961 speech, once called TV “a vast wasteland” of violence, formulaic entertainment, and commercials. Television has come a long way since then, and critics such as Andy Greenwald now call our current moment of television production “the golden age of TV.” While television shows containing the elements Minow decried decades ago still exist, alongside them we now find television characterized by complex plots, moral ambiguity, excellent production value, and outstanding writing and acting performances. In this class, our discussions will center around, but not be limited to the aesthetics of prestige TV, and how AMC’s Mad Men and TBS’s Search Party conform to or subvert this framework. Students will learn to visually analyze a television show, and develop their critical reading and writing skills. By the end of the semester, students will be able to make substantiated arguments about the television show they have seen, and place it into greater social and historical context. They will also learn how to conduct formal research through the use of secondary sources and other relevant material to support their theses, analyses and arguments. -

THE CIRCUITRY OF MEMORY: TIME AND SPACE IN MAD MEN by Molly Elizabeth Lewis B.A., Honours, The University of British Columbia, 2013 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL STUDIES (Film Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) August 2015 © Molly Elizabeth Lewis, 2015 Abstract Memory is central to Mad Men (Matthew Weiner 2007-15) as a period piece set in the 1960s that activates the memories of its viewers while also depicting the subjective memory processes of its protagonist Donald Draper (Jon Hamm). Narratively, as much as Don may try to move forward and forget his past, he ultimately cannot because the memories will always remain. Utilizing the philosophy of Henri Bergson, I reveal that the series effectively renders Bergson’s notion of the coexistence of past and present in sequences that journey into the past without ever leaving the present. Mad Men ushers in a new era of philosophical television that is not just perceived, but also remembered. As a long-form serial narrative that intricately layers past upon present, Mad Men is itself an evolving memory that can be revisited by the viewer who gains new insight upon each viewing. Mad Men is the ideal intersection of Bergson’s philosophy of the mind and memory and Gilles Deleuze’s cinematic philosophy of time. The first chapter simply titled “Time,” examines the series’ first flashback sequence from the episode “Babylon,” in it finding the Deleuzian time- image. The last chapter “Space,” seeks to identify the spatial structure of the series as a whole and how it relates to its slow-burning pace. -

Race, Religion, and Rights: Otherness Gone Mad Abstract Inevitable yet often unnamed, the looming political radicalism of the late 1960s acts as something like a silent partner in the Mad Men narrative, relying on viewers' historical knowledge of the social tension outside Sterling Cooper to underscore the contrived nature of the world within it. Just as the series spans the period between the emergence of liberal and radical white feminist discourses, it also bridges key moments in the civil rights movement, from the boycotts, otv er registration drives, and sweeping oratory of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., to the assassinations of civil rights leaders and activists; rioting in Watts nda other cities; and the emergence of a black power movement. -

Sisterhood in the '60s: Joan, Peggy, and a Feminist Awakening Abstract The period between World War II and the women's liberation movement was marked by palpable tension over social changes and gender ideology-an aspect of the postwar era well-known to historians but usually overlooked in the mass media. Television shows such as Leave It to Beaver (1957-1963), Father Knows Best (1954-1960), and The Adventures ofOzzie and Harriet (1952-1966) imagined a time that never existed, presenting the nation's women as domestic and suburban, happily embracing their roles as homemakers and submitting to their husband's authority (Coontz, 2000). -

La construcción de los personajes masculinos en esta ficción ha dado lugar a una extensa literatura analítica; pero no tantos han sido los textos que abordan los personajes femeninos como indispensables. Es interesante explorar más en profundidad los arquetipos que yacen tras las mujeres principales de Mad Men: Joan, Betty y Peggy, y también tras las secundarias Rachel Menken, Sally y Megan Draper, todas ellas de relevancia para la imagen de la mujer en la ficción actual y para entender nuestra propia época. Esta comunicación pretende estudiar los personajes femeninos de Mad men en un momento en el que debido al prestigio de esta serie han surgido otras ficciones que miran hacia la misma década aportando personajes femeninos que se suman al imaginario serial, como las protagonistas de Pan Am; la británica The Hour; o Masters of Sex. Introducción El cine y las series de televisión ofrecen la posibilidad de la reconstrucción del pasado, por lo que ayudan a la percepción del mismo en la memoria colectiva (Erreguerena, 2013: 181). Los tiempos pasados, así como la imagen que conservamos de ellos ayudan a definir los roles sociales y las dinámicas y relaciones del presente. Por ello es importante ver como la multipremiada serie Mad Men aporta su perspectiva a la imagen de las mujeres en la década de los 60: La serie no retrata sólo la América de esos años, retrata el germen de la sociedad actual, por tanto también es un retrato de nuestros orígenes, de nuestras raíces, de nosotros mismos, con nuestros vicios y virtudes. -

He finds her in a commune, and he puts on a good show to appear more accepting than her mother, but the following day he insists she return home. She refuses. He tells her, “I know everyone your age is running away and screwing around, but you can’t, you’re a mother,” and when she still refuses, he picks her up and tries to carry her towards a truck as she struggles in his arms and demands he let her go. -

Therefore, correspondingly, the Madison Avenue advertising agency at the heart of AMC’s Mad Men set in the midst of America’s post-war economic boom becomes a locus of power circulation and increasingly fluid notions of identity, as the characters work at the common goal of enticing people to buy their clients’ wares, affecting the actions of each other within the office, as well as affecting the public in the bigger picture. -

À travers la fictive agence de publicité Sterling Cooper & Partners et de son charismatique directeur artistique, Don Draper, la série personnifie la culture corporatiste des cols blancs et les nouveaux défis encourus par l’homme de l’organisation dans les années soixante. Basée sur la méthode de l’historicisme, cette analyse historique met en évidence la manière dont Mad Men incarne cette décennie à partir des sources populaires telles que les romans, les films ou les magazines. Ce type de documents sont pris par les créateurs de la série comme l’expression des certaines valeurs et attitudes des années soixante mais aussi bien comme outil pour la critique des idées consacrées. Mad Men nous permet de comprendre la manière dont la révolution des techniques publicitaires se déroule dans le décor d’une société où les grands enjeux restent encore non résolus.
