  • Brisbane Comedy Festival Returns in 2020
MEDIA RELEASE Tuesday 26 November 2019 BRISBANE COMEDY FESTIVAL RETURNS IN 2020 Brisbane Comedy Festival enters its second big decade in 2020, playing in more venues, welcoming more international stars, promoting more local talent and bringing more laughs than ever before. A highlight of the international comedy calendar, Brisbane Comedy Festival 2020 returns for its 11th year with a bumper line-up of 85 acts playing in 14 performance spaces across five Brisbane venues from 21 February to 22 March, 2020. Brisbane Powerhouse is comedy central, hosting performances and gigs across its iconic New Farm space – from its rooftop to its storeroom – with Brisbane City Hall and Newstead Brewing Co again throwing open their doors to entertainers. Joining the fold for the first time are two new Fortitude Valley venues: the old-world charm of The Tivoli and the shiny newness of Fortitude Music Hall. The month-long festival of fun and frivolity begins with the popular Brisbane Comedy Festival Opening Gala, hosted by a soon-to-be-revealed act who will attempt to corral the comedic chaos of more than 9 comedians at Brisbane City Hall on Friday 21 February. The festival again shines the spotlight on top Queensland talent including Mel Buttle, Steph Tisdell, Becky Lucas and Matt Okine; local collectives Act/React, Brisburned and Politics in the Pub; and the dazzling return of a ‘90s icon – Agro with Jamie Dunn. Grin, giggle and guffaw with a slate of national comedy heavyweights such as Dave Hughes, Peter Helliar, Fiona O’Loughlin, Nazeem Hussein, Frank Woodley, Sammy J and the duo we never knew we needed: Paul McDermott and Steven Gates.

  • October 2008 Comedy Channel Highlights
www.comedychannel.com.au OCTOBER 2008 HIGHLIGHTS THE MERRICK & ROSSO SHOW WORLD PREMIERE Thursday October 2 @ 8.30pm Continues Thursdays at 8.30pm Merrick and Rosso are back on the box where they belong, with the keys to the Foxtel car - and enough fuel in the tank to really cause some chaos! They’ll finally return to their broadcasting birth place at The Comedy Channel with THE MERRICK & ROSSO SHOW. So what’s on the cards for the new show? Each week the boys will front up before a live studio audience with their unique take on anything and everything. From what’s happening in the world of news to the big questions: Can you deep fry a watermelon? On THE MERRICK & ROSSO SHOW, celebrities will make regular guest appearances from in-studio interviews to recorded comedy pieces to show you a side of them never before seen. Into the mix will go plenty of studio audience interaction and more mayhem and stupidity than is legal in three states. For perhaps the first time, Merrick Watts and Tim Ross will truly focus the energy and excitement of their legendary sell-out live comedy shows and bring that force to the electric television. It’s hotter than Gordon Ramsay’s kitchen, is sure to top Brendan Nelson’s approval ratings and it’s ‘wronger’ than an Austrian family get-together. THE MERRICK & ROSSO SHOW will allow nobody to be immune from their parodies and sketch comedy. Finally, as Merrick and Rosso are keen to point out, “Put simply, the show is Morcambe and Wise meets The Star Wars Christmas Special at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting during The French Renaissance… on a weeknight.” Buckle up Australia, for a riotous half hour of THE MERRICK & ROSSO SHOW.

  • PETER HELLIAR Comedian/Writer/Director/Broadcaster/Presenter
PETER HELLIAR Comedian/Writer/Director/Broadcaster/Presenter Peter Helliar has been one of Australia’s favourite comedians since his first appearance on our TV screens as a core cast member on the Logie Award winning Rove back in 1999. Pete has performed stand up for more than twenty years, selling out shows right across the country, where he makes the difficult business of being funny look dead easy. Now the Gold Logie Nominee is making people laugh four nights a week on Network Ten’s The Project, the beloved show where the news is delivered differently. A man of many talents, Peter created and co-produced two series of the award winning It’s A Date for ABC TV, and How to Stay Married for Network Ten which premiered in 2018 and will return in 2020. He has directed episodes of both shows. He is also the author of the much loved children’s book series, Franky Fish which is published by Hardie Grant/Egmont. In 2018, Frankie Fish was voted one of Australia’s Top 50 kids books in the annual Better Reading Top 50 Kids Books poll and Frankie Fish and the Sonic Suitcase was shortlisted for the ABIAs for Book of the Year for Younger Children in 2018. Peter Helliar used to be Strauchanie and his French accent has not improved. “Give Peter Helliar a stage, a microphone, some bright lights and a captive audience and he shows why he is one of the nation’s favourite comedians” Sunday Mail “Wonderful… a bizarre revelation” The Age, Melbourne “Peter Helliar makes the difficult business of being funny look dead easy.

ROVE MCMANUS BIOGRAPHY Rove McManus moved from his native Perth to pursue a career as a stand up comedian in Melbourne in 1995. After hundreds of gigs and a stint on community television Rove landed a chance to show off in front of the nation with nine late night episodes of his own tonight show, rove on Channel Nine in 1999. When Nine decided that they didn’t want another series the Ten Network gave Rove and his production company, Roving Enterprises, another shot with ten episodes in late 2000. Rove Live is now a high profile fixture on the Ten Network’s prime time schedule as well as on TV3 in New Zealand. In 2002 Rove was nominated for the Gold Logie and Rove Live won the Logie for Most Popular Light Entertainment Program. In 2003 Rove took out three Logies, including Most Popular Presenter, Most Popular Light Entertainment/Comedy Program and the coveted Gold Logie for most popular personality on Australian television. He repeated the trick in 2004 and 2005, picking up all three awards including the Gold Logie in each year. Roving Enterprises has produced a number of programs apart from Rove Live, including the sketch comedy program Skithouse and the AFL Football program, Before The Game. Roving has also produced the ARIA Awards since 2002. In 2005 Roving produced Seriously Forty, celebrating forty years of the Network Ten which Rove co-hosted with Bert Newton. Rove returned to his roots in 2005 with a national tour of his brand new show Rove McManus Stands Up performing to more than 35,000 across Australia and New Zealand.

  • PETER HELLIAR Comedian/Writer/Director/Broadcaster/Presenter
PETER HELLIAR Comedian/Writer/Director/Broadcaster/Presenter Pete first came to the nation’s attention in 1999 as a cast member of Rove, Rove McManus’ ill-fated first series on the Nine Network. When the show went to Network TEN in 2000, Pete went with it, becoming an integral part of the Logie Award winning variety show until it wound up at the end of 2009 after ten historic years on Australian TV. In 2003, Pete took on Australian Rules football with After The Game, which became Before The Game in 2004. The following year Pete created Bryan Strauchan, Collingwood rookie and instant superstar. “Strauchanie” created an AFL sensation, picking up the code’s Personality Of The Year Award, getting his own car in the Grand Final Parade, and even being immortalised on his own official AFL Footy Card and winning Best On Ground at the 2009 EJ Whitten match. All the while Pete has been working as a stand up, touring to sold-out houses in Australia and New Zealand as well as hosting his own radio shows for Triple M and 2Day-FM and guesting regularly on Nova. Writing has always been at the centre of everything Pete has done as a comedian. After Rove was cancelled by the Nine Network in 1999, he started work on some film ideas, and in 2009 Pete found himself on the set of his very own feature film. In 2010 I Love You Too, produced by Princess Pictures and starring Brendan Cowell, Peter Dinklage, Yvonne Strahovski and Megan Gale was released.

  • 2019 BIOGRAPHY "There Are Passive Stand-Ups and There Are Active Ones
“There are moments that have you laughing out loud and then suddenly gasping as you choke back tears…this was one of the better evenings I will spend in a theatre this year.” AUSTRALIAN STAGE ONLINE, Review for Hold The Pickle, 2011 “Rachel Berger is well known as a comedian, a performer who delivers rapid-fire lines with assertive and acerbic virtuosity. In Hold the Pickle, however, she leaves the microphone behind to paint an intimate portrait of her parents' life story, and by extension her own cultural heritage. Scores of characters come to life, each crafted with affection and wry observation. But this is no mere sentimental nostalgia trip, and Berger's honesty in exploring the gamut of family life is a key factor in the success of Hold The Pickle.” COMEDIAN THE AGE, Melbourne ACTOR MC “She could make the Sphinx crack a smile.” THE SUN HERALD, Sydney PRESENTER “She’s brave, funny, clever and best of all, human.” THE SUNDAY AGE, Melbourne WRITER "Berger, queen of stand-up satire and dominatrix extraordinaire of audiences." THE AUSTRALIAN 2019 BIOGRAPHY "There are passive stand-ups and there are active ones. Berger is one of the latter ... but there's still a centre to the act too. She's sharing her observations with us rather than pounding out the gags." TIME OUT, London “Experience this hour of machine gun delivery and ricocheting thoughts, and you realise she must be as pumped as an AFL footballer.” STAGE LEFT RACHEL BERGER is one of Australia’s most highly regarded, adept, and adaptive comedic talents, working variously as a comedian, broadcaster, novelist, columnist, agitator and television entertainer.
