Pt. Bansi Dhar Nehru Was Born in 1843 at Delhi
The firm foundation of the Mughal empire in India was laid by a Uzbek Mongol warrior Zahiruddin Mohammand Babar, who was born in 1483 in a tiny village Andijan on the border of Uzbekistan and Krigistan after defeating the Sultan of Delhi Ibrahim Lodi in the battle of Panipat which took place in 1526, The Rajputs soon thereafter under the command of Rana Sanga challenged the authority of Babar, but were badly routed in the battle of Khanwa near Agra on 16th March, 1527. Babar with a big army then went upto Bihar to crush the revolt of Afgan chieftains and on the way his commander in chief Mir Baqi destroyed the ancient Ram Temple at Ayodhya and built a mosque at that spot in 1528. Babar than returned back to Agra where he died on 26th December 1530 dur t o injuries received in the battle with Afgans in 1529 at the Ghaghra’s is basin in Bihar. After Babar’s death his son Nasiruddin Humanyu ascended the throne, but he had to fight relentless battels with various rebellious chieftains for fight long years. The disgruntled Afghan chieftains found Sher Shah Suri as an able commander who defeated Humanyu in the battle of Chausa in Bihar and assumed power at Delhi in 1543. Sher Shah Suri died on 22nd May 1545 due to injuries suffered in a blast after which the Afghan power disintegrated. Hymanyu then taking full advantage of this fluid political situation again came back to India with reinforcements from Iran and reoccupied the throne at Delhi after defeating Adil Shah in the second battle of Panipat in 1555. -

Central Administration of Akbar The mughal rule is distinguished by the establishment of a stable government and other social and cultural activities. The arts of life flourished. It was an age of profound change, seemingly not very apparent on the surface but it definitely shaped and molded the socio economic life of our country. Since Akbar was anxious to evolve a national culture and a national outlook, he encouraged and initiated policies in religious, political and cultural spheres which were calculated to broaden the outlook of his contemporaries and infuse in them the consciousness of belonging to one culture. Akbar prided himself unjustly upon being the author of most of his measures by saying that he was grateful to God that he had found no capable minister, otherwise people would have given the minister the credit for the emperor’s measures, yet there is ample evidence to show that Akbar benefited greatly from the council of able administrators.1 He conceded that a monarch should not himself undertake duties that may be performed by his subjects, he did not do to this for reasons of administrative efficiency, but because “the errors of others it is his part to remedy, but his own lapses, who may correct ?2 The Mughal’s were able to create the such position and functions of the emperor in the popular mind, an image which stands out clearly not only in historical and either literature of the period but also in folklore which exists even today in form of popular stories narrated in the villages of the areas that constituted the Mughal’s vast dominions when his power had not declined .The emperor was looked upon as the father of people whose function it was to protect the weak and average the persecuted. -

It brings a hitherto unrecognized period of artistic accomplishment to light and studies the transformations within painting culture in the multicultural Anglo-Mughal society of Delhi. Rather than being fixated on the continuum of Mughal painting over centuries, this dissertation suggests that the art of the late Mughal period should be studied on its own terms as a response to immense socio-political and cultural changes. At its core this study is concerned with dissolving the stylistic barriers between Mughal and Company painting in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. I take up the question of what the term ‘late Mughal painting’ entails and discuss how the term privileges the notion of a court centric culture of painting in an era when the Mughal court was only one of many venues of artistic expression. On the other hand, I highlight the inadequacy of the term ‘Company painting’ to address the variegated nature of works produced under East India Company patronage in this period. -

AMANBAGH Excursions Bhangarh Twelve kilometres from Amanbagh, the wonderful, intriguing ruined city of Bhangarh is a medieval site of great archaeological – and folkloric – importance, its splendid ruins widely believed to be haunted. Built in the late 1500s by Jaipur royal Diwan Madho Singh – younger brother of Maharaja Man Singh, Akbar the Great's general – this now uninhabited city once teemed with magnificent bazaars, a palace, gardens, temples and bathing pools. Legend has it that, a generation after its completion, it was deserted overnight after being cursed by an evil court magician, Selu Sewra, who had unsuccessfully attempted to seduce Bhangarh’s virtuous and beautiful queen. Today Bhangarh is a National Heritage Site and though it is often hailed as one of India's top-ten sites, very few tourists manage to include it in their itinerary. Mornings and late afternoons are a perfect time to visit this deserted city – an amazing setting for photography, meditation and yoga. We can organise visits to Bhangarh, either to tour the ruins or to practise yoga on one of the temple platforms at dawn with a vegetarian breakfast. Transport is via car or jeep; alternatively, you could combine trekking with Bhangarh as your final destination. It is also a favourite winter location for lunchtime picnics. Ajabgarh village, fort, temple and mosque Ajabgarh’s finest attractions are its fort and its old temple. Dedicated to Shri Raghunathji, the temple was built in 1635, and features a 24-pillar open courtyard and a marble façade. This temple once housed idols of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita, bejewelled with precious stones that fell victim to thieves some time ago. -

Following the 1989 Begley & Desai book Taj Mahal: an Illustrated Tomb, the flourish of scholarship that would expectedly follow a complete epigraphical catalog never arrived. Despite being well-known and universally cherished as indicated by the Taj Mahal’s recognition as a UNESCO world heritage monument and as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, there is insufficient research directed towards the inscription program specifically. -

[Photo 1003/(896)] Lodi Garden, located on Lodi Road between Safdurjung’s Tomb and called Lady Willingdon Park, after the wife of the then British Viceroy. Khan Market in south Delhi, covers an area of 90 acres and is dotted Post-Independence, it was more appropriately renamed Lodi Garden with beautiful monuments and tombs. Buzzing with joggers and and was redesigned in 1968 by J.A. AGRA YAPILARINDA ÇİÇEK ÜSLUBU Ali Fuat BAYSAL* ARAŞTIRMA Öz Hindistan, tarihî özelliklerinin yanında, farklı ırk, kültür ve dinleri bünyesinde barın- dıran yapısıyla eşsiz zenginliğe sahip bir ülkedir. Özellikle dini grupların çeşitliliği, süs- leme üzerinde etkili olmuş ve bu durum süsleme sanatı ile ilgili bir zenginliğin oluşma- sını sağlamıştır. Din ve tezyînat arasında yakın ilişki bulunmasından dolayı her inanç grubu kendi dini anlayışı çerçevesinde ibadethaneler inşa etmişler ve bu mekânları yine inançları çerçevesinde süslemişlerdir. Babürler Dönemi içerisinde Hindistan coğrafyasında özellikle Agra’da Türk izleri ta- şıyan pek çok yapı inşa edilmiştir. Şah Cihan’ın iktidarı süresince inşa edilen yapıların tezyînatında XVI. yy. Osmanlı nakkaşlarından olan Kara Memi üslubunun benzeri bir çiçek üslubu dikkat çeker. Bu yapılar içerisinde en meşhur olan Tac Mahal’dir. Osman- lıların başta mimari olmak üzere diğer sanatlarda kendi kültür ve sanatını tanıtmada baskıcı bir anlayıştan ziyade uygulama yapılan yörenin kültürel özelliklerine saygı ve hassasiyet gösterdiği malumdur. Indian Subcontinent, 1750–1947 Tania Sengupta [CHAPTER KEYWORDS: India; Pakistan; Bangladesh; Burma; Ceylon (Sri Lanka); Britain; France; British Raj; prison; railway station; market (bazaar); bungalow; veranda; cutcherry (office); zilla sadar; cantonment; Neoclassicism; Indo-Saracenic; New Delhi; Edwin Lutyens] [CHAPTER ABSTRACT: The Indian subcontinent under colonial rule from the mid-eighteenth to mid-twentieth centuries witnessed the establishment of British economic and political dominance, suppressing other European powers, and consequently creating a long-term negative balance of the subcontinent’s trade with Europe and loss of its political sovereignty to Britain. Starting with Bengal around the mid-eighteenth century, the British gained territories across India, Ceylon and Burma over the nineteenth century. British colonial rule consisted of creating a ‘military fiscal’ state with agricultural revenues used to fund British wars worldwide. It also exploited cash cropping and plantation economies along with political control. In the full-blown imperial era (starting in 1858, following the Indian Mutiny of 1857), the colonial administration developed major institutions and other forms of infrastructure, accompanied by Victorian health and sanitary regimes, to organise and control its subjects’ lives. Following numerous peasant uprisings and increasingly including the middle classes, Nationalist resistance to British rule had intensified by the early twentieth century. This opposition, along with the war-impoverished British economy, finally led to the independence of the nations of the Indian subcontinent in the late 1940s. Colonial sociocultural encounter from the late eighteenth century involved the confrontation of European Enlightenment ideals with those prevalent in the Indian subcontinent. Early colonial travellers and Orientalists engaged in the study of Eastern cultures viewed the East as an exotic but decaying civilisation.
