Since 1863 we have strived to ensure equality of opportunity in education for talented children who have lost their fathers or mothers and have limited financial means. We aim to first provide them with care and, then, with a bright future. With 156 years of deep-rooted history, the Darüşşafaka Society provides equal education opportunities to nearly 1.000 children, selected through examinations across Turkey, through secondary school to their graduation from high school. We predicate our education on care and warmth, and accompany our children throughout their journey to universities in Turkey or abroad. We also provide scholarships for students to complete their university education. Our students gradually climb up the steps in their careers, becoming academicians, civil servants, doctors, lawyers, journalists, scientists and more. We work to transform the talent of each student into a valuable resource of the future, thanks to your support. Dedicated to principles, progressing towards the future The number of donors and donations play an essential role in raising modern- day individuals who adhere to Ataturk’s principles, and are life-long learners and critical thinkers. The history of Darüşşafaka Society dates from the Ottoman Empire and the early days of the Turkish Republic. Throughout its existence, the Society has sustained its mission through donations from benevolent individuals, including Zübeyde Hanım, the mother of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, and Makbule Atadan, his sister. Playing a crucial role in the history of Turkey, the Society considers each donation, regardless of the amount, as a commitment to its mission and, as such, the Society is accountable. 4 Darüşşafaka Society Annual Report 2019 Chairman’s Message Dear Students of Darüşşafaka, Esteemed Members and Partners, In 2019, we continued our mission of equality of opportunity in qualified education, and the last 12 months have seen many accomplishments and achievements. Administrative Matters Since the chairmanship of the Board Of Directors is significant in terms of the sustainability and institutionalization of the Darüşşafaka Society, the term of office has been limited to six years (3+3) and included in the internal regulations. Subsequently, in 2019, there was a change of seat within the governance of the Society. In April 2019, I took over the Chairmanship of the Darüşşafaka Society Board of Directors from Mr. Talha Çamaş, who carried out his duties with great dedication and success. We are embarking on an innovative process of development based on these ongoing projects. I will relinquish this duty, which has been entrusted to me when the General Assembly selects the right person and team. For now, together with my colleagues on the Board of Directors, we undertake this duty with a common sense of responsibility and devotion. As Darüşşafaka Society, we do not compromise on our corporate governance. Rather, we take firm steps towards a sustainable structure based on plans and goals by renewing our strategic plans every five years. In the second half of 2019, we built on the previous term’s strategic objectives. We determined our road map for the 2020-25 term and informed our stakeholders regarding the main principles. The new strategic plan is based on three primary matters: “Education,” the “Individual” and “Sustainability.” 6 Darüşşafaka Society Annual Report 2019 Chairman’s Message As a Non-Governmental Organization and a “home of compassion,” we emphasize care, improvement and attention for our “people,” mainly our teachers while remaining focused on our primary mission of equality of opportunity in qualified education. Under the umbrella of science and knowledge, We have gained strength, especially with the our main priority is, and always has been qualified success of the “81 Provinces, 81 Students” project, education. THESIS ISLAM IN MODERN TURKEY (1938-82) flBSTRflCT THESIS SUBMITTED FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF MLOSOPHY IN ISLAMIC STUDIES BY AIJAZ AHMED UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF DR. SAYYIDAHSAN READER DEPARTMiNT OF ISLAMIC STTUDISS ALI6ARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY ALIGARH (INDIA) 20Di STff^o % ABSTRACT In tenth century, the Turks of central Asia had converted to Islam and by the eleventh century they began to push their way into South-Eastern Russia and Persia. The Ottoman State emerged consequent to an Islamic movement under Ghazi Osman (1299-1326), founder of the dynasty, at Eskisehir, in North- Eastern Anatolia. Sufis, Ulema and Ghazis of Anatolia played an important role in this movement. For six centuries the Ottomans were almost constantly at war with Christian Europe and had succeeded in imposing the Islamic rule over a large part of Europe. The later Sultans could not maintain it strictly. With the expansion of the Ottoman dominions the rulers became more autocratic with the sole aim of conquering alien land. To achieve this the rulers granted freedom and cultural autonomy to his non-Muslim subjects and allowed the major religious groups to establish self governing communities under the leadership of their own religious chiefs. The recent work is spread over two parts containing eight chapters with a brief introduction and my own conclusions. Each part has four chapters. Part I, chapters I to IV, deals with the political mobilization of the Turkish peasants from the beginning of the modernization period and to the war of Independence as well as the initial stages of the transition to comparative politics.
