ENKA PRIMARY SCHOOL PARENT STUDENT HANDBOOK Introduction and Welcome Dear ENKA Families,

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year!

This parent handbook provides you with comprehensive information about our academic programs and our assessment processes, as well as details about the day-to-day functioning of the school that you need to know.

As you know, apart from meeting all MEB requirements, we are an IB World school and our child- centered approach to teaching and learning is based on the IB Principles and Practices. We aim to help children to become responsible, balanced, and engaged members of the community both within the school and in the wider world, and to teach them the learning skills that they will need in future life. We encourage you to work with us in achieving these goals and to become active participants in our school community.

I hope this handbook answers most of your questions about the school and its programs and is of use to you and your child. Please also look at our new website regularly where you can find information including the latest updates of this and other documents, but if you have any remaining questions please ask me, the Principals, or the teachers. We are here to help.

Wishing you all the best for a successful year!

Richard Bartle School Director and Advisor to the Executive Commi ee

If you do not report your child's illness or absence, we will make every reasonable effort to contact you to assure your child's whereabouts and safety.

Any contagious illness your child contracts must be reported to the school nurse immediately. A doctor’s note should accompany your child upon returning to school. With a doctor’s note your child’s absence will be recorded as excused absence in the system.

Our practices related to the duration/numbers of absences are regulated by the Ministry of Education Regulations. ENKA PRIMARY SCHOOL PARENT STUDENT HANDBOOK 6. Library ENKA Schools have three libraries: the Pre-School Library, the Primary School Library and the Middle School- High School Library in an integrated library system that blends traditional print resources with a variety of electronic collections and services. Our goal is to assist students in becoming competent, critical, and ethical users of information with an enthusiasm for reading and learning by integrating the library program fully into the IB curriculum.

The libraries are designed to accommodate small groups, individual readers, and large group instruction. Facilities feature cozy areas for quiet reading, teaching areas for student research, and areas for electronic device usage. The libraries have large book collections in Turkish and English as well as mother tongue materials, and a large array of electronic resources including eBooks, eMagazines, databases, and educational videos are also available. Students and parents may borrow materials from the libraries for two weeks and we ask parents to come outside of regular class hours. Materials that are lost or damaged will incur a replacement cost. Beginning in Middle School there is a small fee for late materials with the objective of encouraging responsibility, understanding of shared resources, and aiding preparedness for college life.

Our electronic resources and our library catalog may be accessed from home through our library catalog homepage: h ps://ENKAlibrary.folle destiny.com. The library is a bilingual teaching area with both native Turkish and English librarians to assist students. Primary School Library The Primary School Library, located on the second floor of the primary school building, is a spacious, bright facility. This new purpose built space has been designed with flexibility of instruction needs in mind, and provides the possibility of a variety of educational activities to take place. The collection is comprised of a variety of digital and print resources to support IB as well as leisure reading and personal interests. The library digital collection and print collection database may be accessed through our catalog homepage: h ps://ENKAlibrary.folle destiny.com. The Destiny app has been installed on student iPads to provide access to our catalog, and students receive instruction for using this tool.

Every week students have two 40 minute literacy blocks where they may access the library. Each student may borrow four books at time. We encourage students to check out library material in a variety of languages. Additionally, teachers and teacher librarians plan collaborative lessons in a flexible schedule to integrate research and information literacy skills into the IB curriculum.

ENKA PRIMARY SCHOOL PARENT STUDENT HANDBOOK 7. Assessment Various assessment tools are used in order to assess student learning and to guide future progress. Student work is being continually monitored. All stages of learning process are followed through pre-assessments, formative assessments and summative assessments. Pre-assessment plays an important role in identifying students’ existing knowledge, interests and learning styles. In addition, student understanding is assessed with a variety of tools and strategies such as rubrics, report cards, checklists, entry-exit cards, brainstorming, mind maps, presentations, observations. The school assesses student learning to help students learn be er; inform students, teachers and parents about student learning as well as improve the curriculum. Data from assessment are shared with related parties through parent information sessions, parent-teacher conferences, student-led portfolio conferences and wri en reports.

Parents are sent their portfolio conference times in advance. Except very important excuses (such as a doctor’s report or a flight ticket), no change will be made to portfolio conference days and times.

Parents come to the portfolio conferences with their child. Programs are subject to continuous supervision by staff and the administration. At the end of the year there is a holistic assessment which guides us in developing our studies and to improve our programs. The Ministry’s and other international education consultants’ inspections also help us improve our programs.

We wish our students to learn more about themselves. We want to help students find solutions to their problems; develop self-respect and an understanding of what they do. Our program enables them to find and control their own way, to have everything they learn become a part of their knowledge and existence.

Student achievement is described by grades received for wri en work, exams, homework, and projects. Students need to fulfill class, course, and lab hours requirements and to take exams. Grades used to describe achievement are on scale of 1–5.

We evaluate not only knowledge but also behavior, comprehension, interpretation, application, analysis, and synthesis. The psychological qualities of the students such as their learning potential, interests, and a itudes are considered. Assessment tools such as an inventory of interests, and a itude are also used. Assessment is carried out in order to see the progress the students have made in acquiring knowledge, skills, vision, a itudes, and behavior.

We also consider participation in class, scientific a itudes and behavior, observation, inquiry- research, scientific thinking, the ability to take responsibility, participate in group-work, and share knowledge. Quality and Quantity of Assessments Teachers give exams and make students do projects and tasks in order to determine the performance taking into consideration the general principles of assessment, general outcomes ,and standards in the curriculum of subjects.

Achievement of students in the special education program is assessed taking into consideration the exams and tasks regarding determining their performances and individualized education programmes.

In Grades 1-3 student achievement is determined through application of the assessment principles set out in the curriculum, by taking into account the developmental stages of the learners as well as the student engagement in learning experiences that are implemented under the guidance of the teacher. Student achievement is shown by using the terms “very good”, “good”, and “needs to improve.”

In Grade 4, student achievement is assessed according to the scores students get on the exams and learning activities.

In requirement of the government regulations in grade 4 students are given 2 exams in every subject. The exam questions and the answer keys are prepared by the grade level teachers.

Parents of students who don’t show up to an examination or fail to turn in their projects on time need to inform the school administration in writing of the reason within 5 working days from the date of the examination or the deadline.

ENKA PRIMARY SCHOOL PARENT STUDENT HANDBOOK Exams and assignments done in order to determine student performance are assessed on a scale of 100 points. Assessment results are wri en in the teacher grade charts in points, and then converted into a scale of 5 and recorded on the report-card.

Grades and scales of points are as follows:

POINTS GRADES SCALE 85-100 5 Excellent 70-84 4 Good 55-69 3 Average 45-54 2 Pass 0-44,99 1 Fail

The semester point, year-end point, year-end success point, and diploma point are determined over a scale of 100 points; and the semester grade and the year-end grade are determined over a scale of 5 according to the provisions of the Regulation. In the five-grade system, success is indicated with four descriptors whereas failure is expressed with one descriptor. Academic Honesty As an IB World school, ENKA Schools promotes academic honesty at all grade levels by explicitly and implicitly teaching the skills, values and understandings of the IB Learner profile, specifically what it means to be an inquirer, principled, knowledgeable and a thinker.

The school will help students develop necessary awareness and instruction in order to prevent them from resorting to academically dishonest behaviors.

If a student is caught in the act of academic dishonesty or his/her work is deemed to be not original/authentic, first of all, the work of the student will be considered as invalid. Secondly, the student will be asked to complete the Academic Honesty Reflection Form by the teacher of the lesson in which the academic dishonesty occurred and will submit the form to the school administration to be kept in the student folder. Finally, the student will be asked to redo the work/assignment. Student Responsibilities • To know what academic honesty means as well as which a itudes and behaviors constitute academic dishonesty • To be familiar with and respect the school’s academic honesty policy • To cite sources appropriately (writing a bibliography, using a footnote, using quotation marks etc.) • To be aware of the consequences of academic dishonesty and not ignore/condone or help with academic dishonesty • To create authentic work • To utilize as many resources as possible when doing research • To respect the work of others • To respect the learning of others • To undertake never to view or alter academic records or documents where this would be a dishonest act

ENKA PRIMARY SCHOOL PARENT STUDENT HANDBOOK Discipline Policy The discipline policy was developed to raise individuals who are sensitive to environmental and other human-related problems by helping every ENKA student foster individual, social, and global citizenship awareness.

The following procedures are implemented at ENKA Primary School.

Level 1-Moderate Misbehavior • The teacher meets with the misbehaving student, and informs the school administration and the counseling Department. • The teacher informs the parent of the issue. • If the Counseling Department and/or the involved teacher/s deem it necessary, teachers of the student are asked to observe and follow up on the student. • Teachers and/or the Counseling Department who follow up on the student invite the parent to school and inform them of the course of action that will be taken. • For recurring misbehavior, the student meets with the school administration, and signs a contract. • The school administration invites the parent to school for a meeting. The parent is asked to cooperate with the school in helping the student improve his/her behavior. • When the decisions made at the meetings held with the student and the parent are not followed, the recurring moderate misbehavior is moved to the category of severe misbehavior.

Severe Misbehavior – Behaviors that put the safety of a student and of others at risk • The teacher who experiences/witnesses the misbehavior informs both orally and in writing the school administration the student and the incident. • The school administration meets with the student/s and the involved teacher/s to get a detailed account of the incident. The student is not sent back to the classroom. He or she is kept in the administrative office. • The school administration calls the parent and invites them to the school. The student is sent home with his/her parent without waiting for the end of the school day. Safe Learning, Values, and Expectations Students at ENKA Schools are expected to behave in a manner that contributes to a safe school environment with an emphasis on learning. A set of common core values has been established to guide us in our pursuit of learning at ENKA Schools;

• Respect • Fairness • Responsibility • Personal Best

Our goal is to help students become aware of behaviors which hinder learning for the students themselves and their classmates, to have the students take responsibility for their own actions, and for students to modify their behavior to conform to the expectations that promote a positive learning environment.

Broad categories of behaviors that negatively affect the learning environment have been defined and each classification elicits a particular response by the school’s administration and the Student Support Team. All members of the ENKA community have the right to teach and learn in an environment free from any fear. Students that behave dangerously will be removed from the area and away from other children immediately. Follow-up procedures will address the issue in an a empt to help the student behave in ways consistent with the school’s core values and expectations.

Students who display repeated pa erns of behavior which are contrary to the school’s core values and hinder learning or are unsafe for others are referred to the school’s leadership for problem- solving intervention. Follow-up procedures will be considered by the school’s Student Support Team headed by the School Principal.
