New Polish Films: WITH SENSE AND SENSIBILITY Andrzej Wajda’s School: THE MASTER AND HIS TRAINEES “Peter and the Wolf”: SECOND OSCAR FOR A FILM MADE IN SE-MA-FOR STUDIO Russia, Afghanistan and Belarus: IN POLISH DOCUMENTARIES „PETER AND THE WOLF” Polish Cinema 2008 THE TRAGEDY OF PRISONERS OF WAR, THE MISERY OF THEIR FAMILIES ANDRZEJ WAJDA’S “KATYŃ” Polish Cinema 2008 editorial “Kino” monthly , a journal providing a perceptive and original insight into various aspects of the film industry, has accompanied Polish cinema for over forty years now. In line with this tradition, in this special English language issue, we present a selection of articles published in “Kino” in the last year. They include reviews, interviews, as well as articles concerning the history of Polish cinema and opinion columns. However, we focus on the most interesting Polish feature films (of which 41 have been made there between the beginning of 2007 and May 2008), as well as documentary and animated films of the last year. Some of them could be seen at various international festivals, where they received numerous awards. The most prestigious award, an Oscar, came to the short animated film, “Peter and the Wolf”, which is a British-Polish co-production, directed by Suzie Templeton and made in the Studio Se-Ma-For in Łódź. On the other hand, the most awarded Polish film was “Tricks” by Andrzej Jakimowski, which till April 2008 received 12 awards, including at the festivals in Gdynia, Venice, Tokyo, Mannheim, Sao Paulo and Miami. However, what counts more than awards is the fact that Polish viewers have regained pleasure in watching Polish films. -

Phone: 624-5707 General Course Description The course presents contemporary Polish cinema from 1945 to the present. Concepts will be studied in their historical, political, philosophical, and aesthetic perspective. We will examine the important national themes in modern Polish cinema, relating them to the history of Poland and Eastern Europe. The main trends (schools, movements) in Polish cinema will be examined such as the so-called PolishSchool and the Cinema of Moral Concern. The works of most important modern Polish film-makers will be examined, including the works of Andrzej Wajda, Andrzej Munk, Agnieszka Holland, Roman Polanski, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Wladyslaw Pasikowski, Leszek Wosiewicz, and Ryszard Bugajski. Films to be examined may be divided into three general groups 1. Films representing post-war history and, more specifically, films covering important social and political transformations, but made after the fact. These are sometimes called revisionist films in search of historical truth, previously distorted by political ideology. 2. Films dealing with World War II. We will look at different ways in which the war is treated by film-makers over the course of the post-war period. 3. The final group of films is chosen purely on the basis of artistic merit. The role of film as an art form will be examined during the different periods of the post-World-War-Two era. -

Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu Kwinto, Siara i Yanek Drzazga – o antroponimach w wybranych filmach Juliusza Machulskiego Juliusz Machulski jest jednym z najpopularniejszych reżyserów polskiego kina – jego utwory rozpoznawane są przez kolejne pokolenia widzów1, a fil- mowe cytaty nie tylko krążą w rozmowach wiernych fanów Seksmisji, ale stanowią już nawet pewnego rodzaju „dobro narodowe”2. Kultowość dzieł Machulskiego to wszakże rezultat połączenia kilku czynników: świetnej, w niektórych wypadkach niemal legendarnej gry aktorów, umiejętności natury warsztatowej autora, a także jego szczególnego podejścia do językowego kształtu dialogów. Okazuje się bowiem, że wspomniany reżyser (i zazwyczaj także scenarzysta swoich filmów) może pochwalić się niebywałym słuchem, co pozwala mu na wprawne komponowanie wypowiedzi bohaterów i uzyska- nie – by posłużyć się sformułowaniem Marka Hendrykowskiego – wysokiego wskaźnika „cytowalności”3. Jako bystry obserwator (i „podsłuchiwacz”) rze- czywistości Machulski podchodzi do potocznej polszczyzny bez dystansu badacza, ale za to z ciepłem i humorem, których przecież w codziennym poro- zumiewaniu się nie brakuje. Nazwisko Machulskiego najczęściej bywa łączone z komedią, a więc spe- cjalnością reżysera (elementy tego gatunku przenikają nawet ukradkiem do innych jego filmów, z założenia niekoniecznie komediowych). 1 42.347 Dr. Stallbaumer-Beishline Film Review Essay Assignment Holocaust Films: “Imagining the Unimaginable” The average American's most extensive exposure to the Holocaust is through popular filmic presentations on either the "big screen" or television. These forums, as Ilan Avisar points out, must yield “to popular demands and conventional taste to assure commercial success."1 Subsequently, nearing the successful completion of this course means that you know more about the Holocaust than the average American. This assignment encourages you to think critically, given your broadened knowledge base, about how the movie-television industry has treated the subject. Film scholars have grappled with the unique challenge of Holocaust-themed films. Ponder their views as you formulate your own opinions about the films that you select to watch. Annette Insdorff, Indelible Shadows: Film and the Holocaust (1989) "How great a role are films playing in determining contemporary awareness of the Final Solution? . How do you show people being butchered? How much emotion is too much? How will viewers respond to light-hearted moments in the midst of suffering?" (xviii) How do we lead a camera or a pen to penetrate history and create art, as opposed to merely recording events? What are the formal as well as moral responsibilities if we are to understand and communicate the complexities of the Holocaust through its filmic representations? (viii) The need for popular reception of a film inevitably leads to "melodramatization or trivialization of the subject." (46) Hollywood/American filmmakers' "universalization [using the Holocaust to make statements about contemporary problems] is rooted in specific social concerns that seek to avoid burdening a basically indifferent public with unbearable facts of the Nazi genocide of the Jews. -

Kamila Żyto Department of Media and Audiovisual Culture University of Łódź Film in the Shadow of History Józef Lejtes and Polish School National history has always been one of the crucial topics in Polish cinema. Almost from the beginning of its existence films have been de- picting storms of historic changes. Why does the situation look like that? The answer could be either obvious or not easy at all. At first, it is worth to realize that Polish history was cruel, painful, dramatic and complicated, which is of course not a convincing, final argument. Many countries expe- rienced cruelty of fate, were forced to struggle for their independence, suf- fered from inconveniences of wars. But expectations and the role attributed to fine arts deeply rooted in national variant of romanticism are typically “Polish”. Creating and upholding national identity, which for years was in danger of disappearing, seems to be considered as an act of courage and the way of manifesting patriotism. As a result, one of the main aims of literature, painting and then, from the beginning of 20th century, cinema was to support “spirit of Polish character”. Paradoxically, or maybe as a con- sequence of “being on duty”, film directors quite often rebel against roman- tic paradigm and instead of paying tribute to the motherland by guarding national unity, they were trying to deconstruct and show the weakness of national mythology, which was glorifying lonely and utopian heroism of individuals. As a result, film directors, whose works will be discussed as case studies, were in some respect the heirs of literary heritage of romanticism aware of its power and long lasting influence. -

Wieczór z Homerem, inaugurujący cykl spotkań Warszawskiego Towarzystwa Filologiczne go, opisał w „Tygodniku Powszechnym”, gdzie na przełomie lat 1952 i 1953 ogła szał krótkie teksty krytyczne pod pseudonimem Patryk. Używając pseudonimu Martha czynił to samo w paxowskim tygodniku „Dziś ijutro” - jego twórcy okryli się wkrótce niesławą, przejmując po śmierci Stalina krakowski tytuł - i właśnie tam recenzował kolejne spotkanie filologów, tym razem poświęcone poezji Horacego. Ale tembr artykułu nie był już tak entuzjastyczny, jak poprzednio. Herbertowi spodobał się pomysł głośnej lektury wierszy rzymskiego liryka w wielu przekładach (nie zawsze najlepszych, jak zaznacza), zabrakło mu jednak stosownego komentarza, który po łączyłby wybrane teksty, choć recytację wierszy Horacego poprzedziło „słowo wstęp ne” samego Kazimierza Kumanieckiego... Ale młodemu Herbertowi, zawsze ironizującemu na temat filologów z „watą w uszach” - skądinąd bardzo przez niego cenionych, zwłaszcza -
