Terry and Wayne met in a most interesting, unusual way—online by way of ICQ, a chat room which focuses on one-on-one conversations. That, happily, led to their marriage, now going on sixteen years. They’ve lived here since 2002 and Wayne’s sister, Mari Sorrell now also lives in the Park. Between Terry and Wayne, they have two sons, two daughters, nine grandchildren, two cats named Jin and Tiglet, and their current baby, a very lovable dog, Bella, short for Isabella. oday, upon a bus, I saw a very beautiful woman and wished I were as beautiful. When suddenly she rose to leave, I saw her hobble down the aisle. TShe had one leg and used a crutch. But as she passed, she passed a smile. Oh, God, forgive me when I whine. I have two legs; the world is mine. I stopped to buy some candy. The lad who sold it had such charm. I talked with him, he seemed so glad. If I were late, it'd do no harm. And as I left, he said to me, "I thank you, you've been so kind. It's nice to talk with folks like you. You see," he said, “I'm blind." Oh, God, forgive me when I whine. I have two eyes; the world is mine. Later while walking down the street, I saw a child I knew. He stood and watched the others play, but he did not know what to do. I stopped a moment and then I said, "Why don't you join them dear?" He looked ahead without a word. I realized, he couldn't hear. Oh, God, forgive me when I whine. I have two ears; the world is mine. With feet to take me where I'd go. With eyes to see the sunset's glow. With ears to hear what I would know. Oh, God, forgive me when I whine I've been blessed indeed, the world is mine.

ow delightful it has been to learn about our neighbors in the Park through the “Spotlight on IITS Residents” series of articles. Speaking for myself, I love being able to connect Hstories with faces. What has come through loud and clear is what interesting, beautiful folks live here. The whole series reminds me of the following story. There once lived a man whose life reflected the maxim, “We teach by what we are, not by what we say.” They say he was a wonderful listener. One little-known story about him stands out as a parable epitomizing the inner beauty which he radiated. A word of clarification which, to me, makes the story all the more tender, loving and beautiful: To the best of my knowledge, this man is not a smoker though I know not and it matters not. A Parable There lived in a certain country a (relatively) young man whose heart was filled with a beautiful, non-judgmental love which he radiated everywhere he went. And there lived in that same country a ninety-some-year-old woman whose time on earth was drawing to a close. The younger man was a dearly cherished friend to her. He came to see her regularly to take her to a place of beauty and peace. Each time, as they quietly communed together, she would reach into her purse, pull out, unwrap from its cellophane, and light . . . a CIGAR (!!!) which she shared with her friend, each taking a few puffs and passing it to the other. (Let me explain, dear reader, that this brought the woman special joy and peace because she lived in a retirement home where smoking—especially cigars—was definitely, definitely not acceptable!) After a time, he would step out of the car, extinguish the light of the cigar in the gravel, hand it back to her, and she would rewrap it, place it carefully back in her purse— until their next visit when the loving ritual was repeated. And so it was that the lady experienced a quiet, gentle love— and knew that she was accepted for who and what she was. And she was greatly blessed. And so we think of those friends, family, neighbors and —yes, even strangers—who love and accept us—just as we are—and, at the same time, celebrate us for what they see we can be and are becoming. And so we are greatly blessed, and we give thanks!

t was Special, it was Heartfelt, it was Lovely, the way Cal-Am made our ladies feel so appreciated this past Mother's Day. Actually, the date was IMay 8, just one day before Mother's Day. The clubhouse was delicately decorated for the occasion, and we were surprisingly greeted by harpist, Re- becca Cosas, who played relaxing music to the delight of us all. There were several tables from which we helped ourselves to treats provided by our host. At the front left side of the hall, stood two massage therapists, ready to accommodate anyone who desired their services. I can personally attest to their ability to relieve stress and make you feel very relaxed. Just when I thought it was time to leave, our Park Manager, Julie Sanders, announced that there was to be a drawing for door prizes. Four lucky ladies were presented with thoughtful gifts. I believe that everyone who attended really felt a little "Special", and we send our "Thanks" to Cal-Am for remembering us on "Our Day".

For all my "Golden" year Friends & Residents Submitted by Nancy Fields ometimes looking back at years gone by, our first love, our first kiss, marriage, our first child, baby's first tooth, first home, first fight, first loss and so many memories lost with Stime. Looking into the mirror and seeing that shy girl who wanted to be a woman so much, but never wanted to grow old. Here we are, they call it the "golden years"... golden with friends, golden with life and golden with knowing "I've got a mansion just over the hilltops, in that great Land where we'll never grow old and one day yonder I will never more wonder but walk on streets that are purest Gold." Well, I believe this poem tells us just how beautiful our "golden" years are. When I read it I just knew that we are all beautiful. Enjoy!

"Old things are more beautiful" Old things are more beautiful than many things brand new because they bring fond memories of things we used to do. Old photographs in albums love letters tied with lace recapture those old feelings that new ones can't replace. Baby shoes, a teddy bear, a ring that Grandma wore, are treasures waiting there behind a door marked "Nevermore". Old things are more beautiful, more precious day by day. Because they are the flowers we planted yesterday. 12 Author: Clay Harrison ISLAND IN THE SUN SENTINEL JULY, 2015 E For Advertising Info Call or email: House Cleaning License #L15000068415 DY & LIZ’S Customized Cleaning & Services, LLC Dy & Liz’s Customized 727-484-7488Over 25 years of experience Dy (727) 269-1024 Cleaning & Services, LLC [email protected] (727) 242-4597 Call for a free estimate today!

The biggest lie I tell myself is… “I don’t need to write that down, I’ll remember it.” Wouldn’t it be great if we could put ourselves in the dryer for ten minutes; come out wrinkle- free and three sizes smaller! Last year I joined a support group for procrastinators. We haven’t met yet! I don’t trip over things, I do random gravity checks! I don’t need anger management. I need people to stop pissing me off! Old age is coming at a really bad time! Lord, grant me the strength to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the friends to post my bail when I finally snap! I don’t have white hair, I have “wisdom highlights”. I’m just very wise. My people skills are just fine. It’s my tolerance to idiots that needs work. If God wanted me to touch my toes, he would’ve put them on my knees. The kids text me “plz” which is shorter than please. I text back “no” which is shorter than “yes”. I’m going to retire and live off of my savings, Not sure what I’ll do that second week. When did it change from “We the people” to “screw the people”? Even duct tape can’t fix stupid… but it can muffle the sound! Why do I have to press one for English when you’re just gonna transfer me to someone I can’t understand anyway? Of course I talk to myself, sometimes, I need expert advice. Oops! Did I roll my eyes out loud? At my age, “Getting lucky” means walking into a room and remembering what I came in there for.

ou know the best of intentions sometimes is not enough. We have a great community here. When we came here, we thought everyone here was pleasant. I never realized the Yundercurrent that was rumbling. To my knowledge, function workers are volunteers. No money paid, just people that start out with good intentions. The work is over and beyond ones expectations, all done freely. Sometimes it is overwhelming. Is it really worth the dis- agreements and giving up people who could remain friends? The Golden Rule says we should “treat others as you would like to be treated”. I like everyone here. We all have something to offer. Separation of great minds never works unless understanding comes with it. I’m outside all of the cliques (I hate that word). Yes, walking in to a big room and some never smile or say hello; yes, it kind of hurts but I always try to forget it and spread happiness around. I haven’t met anyone here I don’t like; I realize we’ll never be close friends like back in the day. But a smile goes such a long way. I’m just saying, Love goes a long way. Sometimes love is just that little smile. Remember, I’m just saying!

Men’s Breakfast Submitted by Richard Oliver, #184, 727-726-0637 n May 21st, the “Men of the Hood” met at Farmer Boy Res- taurant for their monthly breakfast gathering. The restaurant Owas as nice as the last time we met there. The menu imitates the name, “Farmer Boy” as the meals were large enough to satisfy the appetites of any farm hand, gearing up for a day’s work in the north 40. The food was exceptional and cooked so that all the meals were served at the same time. The waitress was a jolly lady who was quick with retorts. She made us laugh. The conversation centered around Larry’s broken arm and the hot day weather. Larry said he had to wait until all swelling went down. Once it did, the

Of course, this led to stories at how others had broken limbs, etc. Some were funny, some not so. The heat brought tales of childhoods spent in the climes of the frozen north. The stories encompassed such topics as: Ice skating and how it differs from roller skating, cutting block ice on ponds for the ice man. Yes, the Ice Man did cometh in those days; ice fishing through holes cut in the ice and ice boating. There were 10 in attendance, Larry, Wayne, Ed, Jim, Bill, Gene, Paul, John P., John O. and Richard. As you can see men, there are no heavy metal-physical topics discussed, just good old light talk and lots of camaraderie. Come and join us the next time. We meet the third Thursday of the month. You will find a sign-up sheet in the club house.

CLE CIR Birthday Celebration for Curtis Juffs Submitted by: Richard Oliver

n May 29th, six neighbors gathered at 132 Caribbean, the home of Curtis Juffs. Rose and Richard Oliver, Bill and Marcia Shiels, Gene and Lee OEcker were there for a surprise birthday party. It was Curtis’ 98th birthday. Curt’s caregiver, Elaine, had orchestrated the whole party unbeknownst to him. For those that do not know him, Curtis has lived here for over 28 years. He is a soft spoken, erudite, stately gentleman. Upon his wife’s death, his home became his haven. The only time he could be seen around the park was at 5:00 AM. At that time, he would take his solitary walk around the perimeter of the park. Twenty-one months ago, he fell in his home and broke his hip. His rehab was extensive. Upon release from rehab, he needed assistance at home. Elaine became his care giver. What a wonderful job she has done with him. She has him out walking and talking to the neighbors, going to the men’s breakfast, and even went to the Halloween Party. He was dressed as a priest and Elaine was dressed as a nun. His surprise party was a success! Everyone had a grand time. Needless to say, we all wished him well and many more birthdays to come.

Remembering Mama Submitted by Sharron Hendrixson

remember being young and watching Mama in the mirror. She was putting on lipstick. Then she would take a finger and run it over her lips. Mama had black hair and dark eyes. I I thought I’d never see anyone any prettier. She worked in a factory every day and when she got home, work was never ending. Years passed and I left home with the man of my dreams. Then we had 2 babies, both boys. The miles between Mom and us was far, but they managed to come and visit. They loved their grandchildren with all their hearts. As time went on, Dad became ill and Mama needed us, so we left our home and business and went to Indiana. Dad had Alzheimer’s and Mama was such a little thing, she couldn’t handle him by herself. We put him in a nursing home. It took almost 5 years for Dad to pass on. It was so hard for Mama. She married him when she was seventeen. They loved each other so. Then 5 years later, Mama got a rare kind of Leukemia and it was moving fast. All we could do was be with her. I stayed with her for 3 weeks. The pain was so bad she had to go to the hospital where she was put on stronger pain medication in a drip. She finally found some peace and could rest. She kept say- ing she had to ponder what the Bible said and nothing was as important as love. It was there when she took her 3 little breaths of air and it was over. The tears fell and I realized I had never been on this earth without a Mama. It makes you feel so lost. My best friend was gone. Life wasn’t as good as it was, but remembering that beautiful woman will never leave my mind and her message of love will live on.

ISLAND IN THE SUN SENTINEL JULY, 2015 E 33

Page 1 of 1 of 1 Page 2 201 19, June of Puzzle Crossword for Solution Trust in others rises as people grow older n a cynical world, trust can seem hard to come by. But new research suggests it may grow as we get older. The World Values Survey, collecting data from more than 200,000 people Iin 83 nations, found that more than a third of people 80 years old or older agreed with that most people can be trusted, although just a quarter of 20-year-olds said the same. The results were consistent regardless of nationality, gender, education, and income. A similar study, analyzing data from the General Social Survey of 1,230 U.S. citizens over time, also found that our willingness to trust increases as we grow older. One possible explanation: As time goes on, most people tend to simplify their lives and spend more time with their families, resulting in a more positive and generous attitude about the world.

That morning cup of coffee may be really good for you lot of us depend on a cup of coffee or two to get going in the morning. But coffee may have even more signifi cant health benefi ts. Here’s a quick look at what it may do to Aimprove your life:

• Melanoma. A study by the National Institutes of Health and the AARP found that the more coffee people drink during the day, the lower their chances of developing melanoma over a 10-year period. Four cups of coffee a day was associated to a 20 percent drop in melanoma risk. • Multiple sclerosis. An analysis of two studies of people diagnosed with MS (one in the U.S. and one in Sweden) found that consuming at least four cups of coffee a day appears to delay the onset of symptoms. The caffeine, researchers say, seems to have neuroprotective properties that inhibit MS development. • Liver cancer. Drinkers of three or more alcoholic beverages a day may be able to cut their risk of liver cancer by drinking coffee, according to a recent World Cancer Research Fund report. Coffee and coffee extracts appear to have a preventative effect on the expression of genes involved with infl ammation—an effect that’s most prevalent in the liver.

Dubbed “Little SFoot” because of his small bones, this specimen was unearthed in South Africa in the early 1990s. His skeleton was almost completely preserved after falling down a narrow cave shaft and dying there. Whether Little Foot was a relative of Lucy’s or a different pre-human species has been a subject of debate among anthropologists, but a new dating process suggests that Little Foot lived and died some 3.67 million years ago, close to the same time as Lucy. Although some scientists dispute the accuracy of the dating technique, if it holds up it suggests an evolutionary link between different species of Australopithecus in ancient Africa, as well as evidence of where in Africa modern humans began to develop.

Birds do it, bees do it, and so do amorous mice rom time immemorial, men have wooed their lady loves with romantic (if sometimes off-key) music. Now scientists from Duke University believe that love songs aren’t just Ffor humans. Mice also sing to females they hope to attract, although they aren’t likely using Barry White. Instead, mice rely on high-pitched sounds outside the range of human hearing, using specifi c tunes when they smell a potential mate and different ones when they fi nally set eyes on her. The songs are louder and composed of more complex sounds when they smell a female scent, and get simpler—but longer—when they fi nally meet face to face. The complex songs seem to attract females, although what specifi cally draws them close is still uncertain.

The very striving and hard work that we so constantly try to avoid is the major building block in the person we are today. —Pope Paul VI
