    POND, KRISTEN ANNE, Ph.D. The Impulse to Tell and to Know: The Rhetoric and Ethics of Sympathy in the Nineteenth-Century British Novel. (2010) Directed by Dr. Mary Ellis Gibson. 253 pp. My dissertation examines how some nineteenth-century British novels offer a critique of the dominant narrative of sympathy by suggesting that the most ethical encounter will preserve distance between self and other while retaining the ability to exchange sympathy in the face of difference. This distance prevents the problem of assimilation, the unethical practice of turning the other into the same that was a common way of performing sympathy in nineteenth century Britain. I propose that these critiques are best identified through a reading practice that utilizes discourse systems; the discourse systems I include are gossip, gazing, silence, and laughter. In the texts examined here (including Harriet Martineau's Deerbrook (1839), Elizabeth Gaskell's Cranford (1851), George Eliot's Silas Marner (1861) and Daniel Deronda (1876), Charlotte Brontë's Villette (1853), and William Thackeray's Vanity Fair (1848)) one encounters each of the elements listed above as more than just plot devices or character markers. For example, gossip occurs in Martineau's and Gaskell's texts as a communicative act used by characters, as a rhetorical device used by narrators, and as a narrative technique used by the authors. The cumulative effect of gossip's engagement with social relations thus critiques unethical uses of sympathy and illustrates more ethical encounters between self and other, challenging, in some cases, the limits of sympathy as a technique for approaching difference.

Presents Gibby Haynes Paintings April 26 - June 1, 2011 Red Hook, Brooklyn, April 26, 2011—Gibby Haynes will begin two months of work at Recess’s new Brooklyn outpost as part of its signature program, Session. Haynes’ project will be the second iteration of Recess’s collaboration with Charlotte Kidd and Dustin Yellin from Kidd Yellin Studios in Red Hook. Recess’s original location at 41 Grand Street in SoHo will remain open; both spaces will be free and open to the public. During his premiere US solo presentation, Haynes will adapt the residency room at Kidd Yellin into a production studio for a series of abstract, geometric paintings. Known for his work as a musician in the group Butthole Surfers, Haynes will translate his intimate relationship with sound and the hardcore movement into visual vocabulary. On eight-foot square canvases, the artist will use bold, contrasting colors issuing from the center in echoing circles. Revolving like a record, the canvas becomes vinyl and the paint etches vibration. About the Artist: Gibby Haynes is an American musician, radio personality, painter and the lead singer of the group Butthole Surfers. He received a BA from Trinity University. His work has been featured in exhibitions at Robert Berman Gallery in Santa Monica California and The Station in Houston Texas.     DEAD CHANNEL SURFING: Cyberpunk and industrial music In the early 1980s from out of Vancouver, home of cyberpunk writer William Gibson and science fiction film-maker David Cronenberg, came a series of pioneering bands with a similar style and outlook. The popular synth-pop band Images in Vogue, after touring with Duran Duran and Roxy Music, split into several influential factions. Don Gordon went on to found Numb, Kevin Crompton to found Skinny Puppy, and Ric Arboit to form Nettwerk Records, which would later release Skinny Puppy, Severed Heads, Moev, Delerium and more. Controversial band Numb ended up receiving less attention than the seminal Skinny Puppy. Kevin Crompton (now called Cevin Key) joined forces with Kevin Ogilvie (Nivek Ogre) and began their career by playing in art galleries. After their friend Bill Leeb quit citing ‘creative freedom’ disputes, they embarked on a new style along with the help of newly recruited Dwayne Goettel. Leeb would go on to found Front Line Assembly with Rhys Fulber in 1986. The style of music created by these bands, as well as many similar others, has since been dubbed ‘cyberpunk’ by some journalists. Cyberpunk represents an interesting coupling of concepts. It can be dissected, as Istvan Csiscery-Ronay has shown, into its two distinct parts, ‘cyber’ and ‘punk’. Cyber refers to cybernet- ics, the study of information and control in man and machine, which was created by U.S. American mathematician Norbert Wiener fifty years ago. Wiener fabricated the word from the Greek kyber- netes, meaning ‘governor’, ‘steersman’ or ‘pilot’ (Leary, 1994: 66). The second concept, punk, in the sense commonly used since 1976, is a style of music incorporating do-it-yourself (d.i.y) techniques, centred on independence and touting anarchist attitudes.
