Müller Abstract The Lebanon and Anti-Lebanon ridges are located in the middle of a narrow “Mediterranean ecozone” corridor stretching along the Levantine coast. Both ridges are high enough to feature a complete range of altitude zones, which includes an alpine tragacanth belt (> 2000 m a.s.l.). The southernmost part of the Anti-Lebanon ridge is situated in the northernmost part of Israel. Among the 548 Israeli Noctuidae species, 106 species (21%) occur only in this small mountainous area. Among them, 17 are endemic and the populations of the remaining 89 species are at the edge of their distribution range. -

Macrolepidoptera from the steppes of Dobrogea (south-eastern Romania) Levente Székely, Vlad Dincă & István Juhász Abstract. Based on material collected during 2007–2009, we report 225 species of macrolepidoptera from the steppes of Dobrogea (south-eastern Romania). Besides numerous rare species with particular ecological preferences, we report Tarachidia candefacta (Hübner, [1831]) (Noctuidae) and Rhodostrophia discopunctata Amsel, 1935 (Geometridae) for the first time in the Romanian entomofauna. Several taxa of high zoogeographical significance for the Romanian and European fauna are commented. The conservation status and interest of the steppe areas from Dobrogea is brought into discussion. Samenvatting. Macrolepidoptera van de Dobrogea steppen (Zuidoost-Roemenië) Gebaseerd op materiaal verzameld tussen 2007 tot 2009, melden we 225 soorten Macrolepidoptera uit de steppen van Dobrogea (Zuidoost-Roemenië). Naast talrijke zeldzame soorten met specifieke ecologische voorkeuren, rapporteren we voor het eerst het voorkomen van Tarachidia candefacta (Hübner, [1831]) (Noctuidae) en Rhodostrophia discopunctata Amsel, 1935 (Geometridae) in de Roemeense entomologische fauna. Verscheidene taxa met belangrijke zoögeografische betekenis voor de Roemeense en Europese fauna worden besproken. De behoudsstatus en betekenis van de steppegebieden in Dobrogea wordt ter discussie gebracht. Résumé. Macrolépidoptères des steppes de Dobrogea (Sud-Est de la Roumanie) Sur base du matériel recueilli entre 2007 et 2009, nous mentionnons 225 espèces de macrolépidoptères des steppes de la Dobroudja (Sud-Est de la Roumanie). En plus de nombreuses espèces rares avec des préférences écologiques particulières, nous rapportons pour la première fois la présence de Tarachidia candefacta (Hübner, [1831]) (Noctuidae) et de Rhodostrophia discopunctata Amsel, 1935 (Geometridae) dans l’entomofaune roumaine. Un commentaire est fait concernant plusieurs taxons d’une grande importance zoogéographique pour la faune roumaine et européenne. -

Syntozyga apicispinata sp. nov. and S. similispirographa sp. nov. are described, S. pedias (Meyrick, 1920) is recorded for the first time from China, and S. spirographa (Diakonoff, 1968) is newly recorded from the Chinese mainland. Adults and genitalia are illustrated, and a distribution map of the Chinese species is given. Keys to identify the Chinese species of Syntozyga are provided. Zydlik Abstract The paper presents the results of a survey, carried out in 2009-2017, of the Noctuoidea fauna of xerothermic ecosystems on the slopes of the Chorna Hora mountain in Ukrainian Transcarpathia. Among the total of 299 noctuid species recorded, 96 are new to the Chorna Hora. The survey has shown unequivocally that this region plays a major role in the preservation of noctuid biodiversity in both Ukraine and Europe as a whole. It supports a series of stenotopic species with Pontic, Mediterranean and Pannonian distributions, regarded as rare and threatened with extinction in Ukraine and central Europe. Mikkola Abstract During the last decades of the 20th century, a new step to the traditional way of preparing lepidopteran micros- cope slides was widely adopted, the technique of inflating and fixing the soft parts of internal genitalia. The taxo- nomic resolution in revising problematic species groups, particularly allopatric relationships, improved considerably. At the same time, the so-called lock-and-key hypothesis has been revived, since usually the sexes show correspon- ding structural details in their internal genitalia. On the basis of intercontinental studies on the Noctuidae, it is con- sidered that the divergence of internal genitalia in pairs of sister species is based on genetic drift. A generally acknowledged system can only be achieved by applying the principles of phylogenetic systematics. The evolution of the Noctuidae is seen as a multi- phasic progressive process, the more advanced evolutionary phases presenting a mosaic of derived and more primitive characters. Stability in the system can only be achieved by an intensive collaboration between larval and imaginai systematists ; our knowledge of larval systematics has so far hardly been used in noctuid classification. The Cuculliinae are redefined based on certain larval and imaginai (valvae) characters. This and closely related subfamilies are collectively termed the Cuculliinae complex. Taxonomic changes Of the original 56 Cuculliinae genera recognised by Hartig & Heinicke (1973), 20 are retained in this subfamily. A further 21 genera are transferred to the Cuculliinae from the 'Amphipyrinae' sensu- Boursin (11), Heliothinae (1) and Acontiinae (9). Thirty-eight genera are removed from the Cuculliinae and transferred to the Noctuinae, Hadapameini trib.n. (the numbers of the genera are not exactly comparable because larval material is not available for all genera, and some of the traditional genera, e.g. Polymixis Hübner and Xanthia Ochsenheimer, have since been split). The name 'Amphipyrinae' is obsolete because of the transfer of Amphipyra Ochsenheimer to the Cuculliinae (Pierce, 1909 ; Beck, 1960, 1989 ; Merzheevskaya, 1967). -

Morphologically enigmatic adults and highly variable larvae prompted A. R. Grote to proclaim, "There would seem to be no genus which offers a more interesting field to the biologist for exploration," (1895). Without known synapomorphies for Acronicta, or the subfamily Acronictinae, their circumscriptions have changed over time. This dissertation delves into the taxonomic history of these taxa, setting the stage for a worldwide phylogenetic analysis of Acronictinae. The diversity of larval forms is considered in a tri-trophic framework, quantifying bottom up (host plant) and top down (predator) effects through measures of diet breadth, morphology, and behavior, all in a phylogenetic context. Adult courtship structures, present in some acronictine species, are scored across the family Noctuidae, to aid in the study of the evolution of complex morphological traits.
