-44- Flashes of Brilliance... Oceanside’s GREEN FLASH

The Green Flash Sunrise Oceanside wonders never cease.... Another day relaxing at the beach taking in a heavenly Oceanside sunset and you notice a brilliant flash of color appear on the horizon, a radiant emerald green adorns the upper edge of the flaring sun, as quickly as it appeared it’s gone.

You’ve Just Been Flashed!!

The Green Flash is a little known and seldomly seen mysterious optical phenomena, it can be seen at just the right time of a sunrise or sunset. When the sun settles over the horizon the rays of light are refracted through layers of the atmosphere onto the water. This creates a reflection of each color in the spectrum, the last being the vibrant green that’s radiated for just seconds before the sun descends or fully emerges.

The Green Flash Sunset

What is this natural wonder? It’s Kelp!!!!!!!! Oceanside beaches are densely populated by brown algae, more commonly known as Giant Kelp. These Giant Kelp plants are anchored by root like structures called holdfasts. While air filled pockets aligning the kelp blades keep the growing plant floating toward the surface, to insure it receives all the nutrients and sunlight that it needs to flourish. The long flowing blades act as homes for some of your favorite sea creatures. Kelp is the natural habitat for hundreds of plankton and fish.

Kelp is also used to make all of the products listed below, creating a multimillion dollar harvesting industry

-46- Grunion Run What Is A Grunion? Grunion are a species of marine fi sh found only along the coast of southern California and northern Baja California. Th ey are justifi ably famous for their unique spawning behavior. Grunion spawn completely out of the water and lay their eggs on many sandy beaches in California. Shortly after high tide, on specifi c nights, sections of these beaches sometimes are covered with thousands of grunion dancing about on the sand. Th e popularity of these grunion runs means that some nights there are more people lining the beaches than grunion in the run. Th e grunion run in March, June, July and August. (April and May are “observation only” months.) You must have a fi shing license to catch grunion (no license is required for those under 16 years of age). You can catch them only with your bare hands. You can’t dig holes in the sand to trap them. You are only supposed to keep what you plan to eat. For fi shing license info and a current grunion run schedule, visit http://www. beachcalifornia.com/grunion-run-annual-schedule.html Expected Grunion Runs for 2012

-62- Biking in Oceanside

Biking is one of the most popular past times in Oceanside. Residents and visi- tors spend a great deal of their free time riding and walking the San Luis Rey and Coastal Rail Trail. Both trails offer a wonderful workout and an oppor- tunity to take in some of the scenic beauty Oceanside has to offer.

Coastal Rail Trail The Coastal Rail Trail is a 44 mile (71 km) long regional bicycle and pedestrian pathway/trail that extends from downtown Oceanside to San Diego. The Oceanside segment is the northernmost portion and begins at the western end of the east-west San Luis Rey Recreational Trail. It is 3 miles long and runs adjacent to the railroad right-of-way and along City streets. The portion near the railroad is a fenced Class I bike path with exclusive rights-of-way and minimum cross flows by motorists. The portion of the trail located on City streets is posted to designate a Class III pedestrian shared trail route.

The Coastal Rail Trail will span the cities of Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas and Solana Beach. This project will construct 17.6 miles of Class I, II and III bikeways within the NCTD rail corridor and adjacent City streets. The trail includes segments of 12' wide multi-use Class I paved paths, 5' wide Class II bike lanes and Class III bike routes within existing roadways.

-63- San Luis Rey Bike Trail San Luis Rey Recreational Trail The trail is a Class I bicycle trail that is approximately 9 miles long with the March 2010 opening of the North Santa Fe Ave. segment. The trail follows the path of the San Luis Rey River and is relatively flat and safe for all age groups. It is completely separate from motorized traffic and is free of stop signs and traffic lights.

The west end of the trail is within a few blocks of the Oceanside Transit Center. Commuters can board the Coaster and Metrolink trains or North County Transit District (NCTD) buses, all of which can accommodate bicycles. It is also a multi-use trail, which may be used for recreational purposes by other non-motorized users such as hikers, runners and skaters.

The main path runs southwest and west along the south bank of the river, passing under College Ave and Douglas Dr., Foussat Rd. and Benet Rd. Bridges. There is access and signage to the path from the sides of all four bridges.

The path continues west along the south bank of the San Luis Rey River, passing under I-5 and N. Coast Hwy. The path turns south and runs roughly parallel to the Santa Fe and Metrolink railroad tracks and ends at the west end of Neptune Way, just a short distance from Cleveland St.
