(Liturgy led by Grade 8)

Grace H: Welcome to worship. This evening we are here to rediscover the joy and excitement of an Extravagant Gift of a Savior. Listen with fresh ears and watch with new eyes as we see the unique way that God had it all planned out from the beginning of time. (pause) Please join us responsively with the Psalm.

Advent Psalm - Psalm 24:7-10 Zach B: Lift up your heads, O gates! And be lifted up, O ancient doors, C: that the King of glory may come in. Matthew T: Who is this King of glory? C: The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle! Zach B: Lift up your heads, O gates! And lift them up, O ancient doors, C: that the King of glory may come in. Matthew T: Who is this King of glory? C: The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory!

Kyrie Jonathan Z: Heavenly Father, you call us to repent of our sins: soften our proud and stubborn hearts. Lord, have mercy. C: Lord, have mercy. Luke N: Lord Jesus, you declared the forgiveness of God: teach us to forgive one another. Christ, have mercy. C: Christ, have mercy. Callan H: Holy Spirit, you search our hearts and show us the truth: direct us in your way of righteousness. Lord, have mercy. C: Lord, have mercy.

Explanation of the Advent Candles Skyler S: The traditional use of Advent candles (sometimes in the shape of a wreath) originated in Germany even before the Reformation. The tradition involved three purple candles and one pink candle.

Maddie R: The purple candles represent the royalty of the coming King Jesus. The pink candle was the third candle to be lit on Gaudete Sunday, the Third Sunday of Advent. "Gaudete" means "Rejoice!" in Latin, so the "pink" candle was used to signify "rejoicing."

Madison M: Some wreaths, like ours, also include a white "Christ candle" in the middle to be lit during the 12 days of Christmas. The concept of giving each candle a name, is a relatively new way to link devotional ideas to the candles.

Abbi G: Please Pray with me. O God, we remember the promise of your Son. As we light these candles, may the blessing of Christ come upon us, brightening our way and guiding us by his truth. May Christ our Savior bring life into the darkness of our world, and to us, as we wait for his coming. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Extraordinary Wait! (Grades 2 & 7)

Kirsten K: Good evening and welcome to our celebration! We have gathered tonight for a birthday party!…a tremendous birthday party for the King of Kings and Lord of Lords!

Henry H: You see, this baby was not a typical baby, but one people had been waiting for and anticipating for years. Many prophets spoke of this birth. Promises of this baby had been heard for years.

Allison V. For years? Why would they hear about a baby being born for years? I thought it only takes 9 months for a baby to be born.

Hailey B: This child was the promised redeemer of Israel. The prophets spoke of this Messiah many times to the people of Israel. Actually, for about 2,400 years before Jesus was born the prophesies were told.

Austin H.: 2,400 years!! I can’t even imagine that many years!

Jackie P: Yes, it was very extraordinary! This was the long awaited Savior. The first prophecy was in Genesis 3:15, “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” This was right after Adam and Eve sinned. God told them of his rescue plan to save them and all people from their sin.

Caleb Y: The prophet Nathan said to King David in 2 Samuel 7:12-13 “When your days are over and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, who will come from your own body and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.”

Rachael S: Isaiah said in chapter 9, verse 6, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

Samuel B: Jeremiah 23:5-6 says, “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will raise up to David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. This is the name by which he will be called: The LORD Our Righteousness.”

Jill H: Zechariah 12:10 says, “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son.”

Steven S: Hosea 6:2 says, “After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will restore us, that we may live in his presence.”

Alyssa F: For years the prophets spoke of Israel’s coming Messiah. Then after God spoke to the prophets Nehemiah and Malachi, he was silent for 400 years!

Olivia R.: 400 years! That is a long time! What do you mean silent?

Emily B: Well, scripture doesn’t tell us that God spoke to the nation of Israel during this time period. His people held on to the promise of the Messiah and waited with the hope that soon He would come. This was the time between the Old Testament and the New Testament - about 400 hundred years!

Brandon S: Wow! So people remembered and believed a promise they hadn’t heard in 400 years?

JJ: Remember, the first prophesy was back in Genesis. That means people first heard about Jesus’ birth about 2,400 years before He came. People were waiting for many, many years!

JJ: What an “Extraordinary Wait!”

Dana L: Yes, until we read in the New Testament, “a voice of one calling in the desert, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’” Do you know who said that?

2nd Grade - John the Baptist!

Alex: Yes, John the Baptist came to be a messenger ahead of Jesus, so that people would remember the promised Messiah.

Matthew K: So was everyone excited about Jesus’ birth?

Julia W: You would think so, wouldn’t you? Unfortunately, many people were too busy to pay attention to God’s work, and they had no idea what was happening. Actually, it is just like today.

Luke F: Many people are too busy to see what God is doing and to join Him in His work. When Jesus was born, it was a very quiet birth. Few people knew the Promised One had been born!

Aneka K: We want to make sure we have a huge celebration for Jesus’ birthday, so we can let everyone know why His coming is important to us and them!

GR. 1-8: “Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates” – LSB 341, St. 1-2 (w/organ) 1 Lift up your heads, ye mighty gates! 2 A righteous Helper comes to thee; Behold, the King of glory waits. His chariot is humility, The King of kings is drawing near; His kingly crown is holiness, The Savior of the world is here. His scepter, pity in distress. Life and salvation He doth bring; The end of all our woe He brings; Therefore rejoice and gladly sing. Therefore the earth is glad and sings. To God the Father raise To Christ the Savior raise Your joyful songs of praise. Your grateful hymns of praise. Public domain

Caden S: Many details about Jesus’ birth were extraordinary and many were common and ordinary. We know God can work through both. Tonight, we will learn about some extraordinary parts and events of Jesus’ birth.

Extraordinary Name! (Grades 2 & 7)

Taylor Z: (speak to children on left riser) Raise your hand if you have a younger brother or sister in your family? (wait for response) Did any of you discuss with your parents what to name the baby?

Zak G: (line may be adjusted to better fit family) Yes, we knew it was a girl and I wanted to name the baby Rachel, but mom and wanted to name her Bethany.

Trevor N: (line may be adjusted to better fit family)We didn’t know if it was a boy or girl, so we picked out names for both. That was fun!

Natalie E: (line may be adjusted to better fit family)We had a name picked out, but mom and dad changed it after seeing my brother. They said he didn’t look like a Charlie.

Jacob S: How was Jesus named?

Grant G: Was he named after his grandpa?

Alexa M: No, I think they looked in the baby name book and Jesus was the most popular name back then, so they decided on Jesus.

Sierra M: Maybe they waited until they saw the baby to see what he looked like.

Cayden P: Let’s look in the book of Luke, in the Bible, to see how baby Jesus was named.

(Mary center stage with )

Lily: “In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David.

Aryah: The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said,”

Gabe H: “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

Madison K: “Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her,”

Gabe H: “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus.”

Michael M: Do you mean an angel told Mary what to name her baby? Wow! That would be really cool!

Sarah S: That was an amazing way that God chose to give Mary the news. The angel proved to her it was part of God's plan for her and Joseph to be parents of the Savior.

Brandon P: That’s right. In Matthew, chapter 1 we read what the angel said to Joseph. Joseph was planning to divorce Mary quietly when he heard was pregnant. Then, the angel appeared to him.

(Joseph and Angel center stage)

Cayden S: Matthew 1:20 “But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,”

Austin E: “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. You will give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

Taylor W: Scripture tells us Joseph gave him the name Jesus. God told both Mary and Joseph what to name Jesus through an angel. What an “Extraordinary Name”!

Extraordinary Birth! (Grade 5) Madison S: The birth of Jesus was extraordinary also. While today babies are usually born in a hospital, Jesus was born in a barn, or a stable where the animals stayed.

Megan W: That doesn’t seem like the cleanest place to have a baby!

Aaron Y: If this were to take place today, it would be all over the evening news!

Ethan B: Twitter would have a trending topic about Jesus. Or a hashtag called #WeirdPlacesToHaveABaby.

Emma S.: Remember that it was a tiny town filled to the max with visitors. There weren’t a lot of choices.

Harrison H: God knew what the plan was all along. He chose that humble place for a purpose.

Logan W.: Why? Shouldn’t the Son of God be staying in the best hotel room, not in the animal’s feed trough?

Megan K: He became a human so he would understand everything about us - what it’s like to be happy or sad, to be tempted or be hurt by others.

Benjamin P: This proved the Old Testament prophecy was true. God is with us.

Preston T: Luke 2:1-7 “In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.”

Ellie B: “(This was the first census that took place while Quirnius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register.”

(Mary and Joseph enter to center stage)

David K: “So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem, the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David.”

Harrison M: “He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was a child.”

Sydney M: “While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son.”

Sarah B: “She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.”

GR. 1-2: “Once in Royal David’s City” – LSB 376, St. 1-2, Cong. St. 3 (w/flute & piano) Gr. 1: 1 Once in royal David’s city With the poor and mean and lowly Stood a lowly cattle shed, Lived on earth our Savior holy. Extraordinary Announcement! (Grades 1 & 3)

Lauren K: We have a new baby boy… Jesus! How would you let people know a baby was born?

Madison M.: Some people send out baby announcements with a little picture on them. They are so cute!!!

Ava-Marie C: Some people send out an email or put a picture on Facebook to let all the family know.

Cullen P: You can let hundreds of people know with a touch of a button.

Alisson K: My cousin was on a hospital’s website that you can look at pictures of the baby right away!

Joseph C: God, of course, had the most awesome way to announce the birth of His Son! Listen to Luke 2:8-14:

Grace V “And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.”

(Shepherds kneel before angel)

Tanner M: “An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.”

Elisabeth Y: “But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.’”

Nadia F: “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.”

Gracie M: “This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

(Angels enter)

Jacob B: “Suddenly, a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

1st Grade: ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.’”

Lainey B: Isn’t that awesome? A choir of angels announcing the birth of Jesus! What an “Extraordinary Announcement!”

Brandon C: I wish I could see and hear a choir of angels!

Ty B: Oh, some day you will. Heaven will be filled with singing and praising God, and the angel choir will be amazing!

Grace G: You will be singing too you know!

Max A: Oh, not me. I’m not a very good singer, but I’m really good with that joyful noise stuff! Just ask my mom and dad!

GR. 1-8 w/ Cong: “Angels We Have Heard on High” – LSB 368, st. 1-2 1 Angels we have heard on high, 2 Shepherds, why this jubilee? Sweetly singing o’er the plains, Why your joyous strains prolong? And the mountains in reply, What the gladsome tidings be Echoing their joyous strains. Which inspire your heav’nly song? Refrain Gloria in excelsis Deo. Refrain

Gloria in excelsis Deo. Public domain

Aiden: The announcement came to shepherds working in the fields. I love the fact that God came to ordinary people to sing the good news of Jesus birth.

Max S: The shepherds reacted just as Jesus wants us to react. They left their fields to find Him and worship Him.

Sarah M: What do you mean that God wants me to react like that? I will never be in a field watching over sheep, so how am I supposed to be like the shepherds?

Gaige M: That’s easy. We are to stop and take time to worship Him. Worship is not just on Sunday mornings. It is the way we live. The shepherds made worshiping Jesus a priority, and we need to do that also.

Mya H: We live in a world full of influences like TV, Ipods, computers, cell phones, radios, video games and more things that continually scream for our time and energy.

Trevor M: We need to make sure we give time and energy to Jesus.

Dainen M: That means to STOP watching so much TV or STOP playing our X-box for hours and spend time with our Savior. Our relationship with Jesus should be our top priority.

Madelyn K: Just like the shepherds, let’s go to Jesus and worship Him every day.

GR. 6-8: “On Christmas Night All Christians Sing” – LSB 377, st. 1-3 (w JuBellate & perc) 1 On Christmas night all Christians sing To hear the news the angels bring, On Christmas night all Christians sing To hear the news the angels bring, Girls: News of great joy, news of great mirth, 3 When sin departs before His grace, ALL: News of our merciful King’s birth. Then life and health come in its place, When sin departs before His grace, 2 Then why should men on earth be so sad, Then life and health come in its place; Since our Redeemer made us glad, Angels and men with joy may sing, Then why should men on earth be so sad, All for to see the newborn King.

Since our Redeemer made us glad, Public domain Boys: When from our sin He set us free, ALL: All for to gain our liberty?

Extraordinary Gifts! (Grades 4 & 6)

Anna A: Gifts at Christmas are really exciting! The best gift of all, however, was given years ago to us, when God sent us His Son to save the world.

Joshua S: Some people forget that Jesus himself was a gift to us. Without Him, we could never have followed the rules and commandments to go to heaven.

Max R: The only reason Jesus was born is because the world needed a Savior. The world is full of sin and darkness, and He came as the one True Light.

Autumn D: Jesus was willing to do the Father’s Will by leaving heaven and being born on earth. Can you imagine? He had to leave wonderful heaven to come to sinful earth.

Brett S: He also knew he would have to suffer and die to conquer the grave, so that we can live with Him eternally.

Brock J: What an “Extraordinary Gift” to give to each of us and an “Extraordinary Love” that God has for us.

Sage W: Listen to John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that He gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”

Mikey F: The greatest gift we have ever been given is Jesus and that is the gift we need to continue to give others. We want everyone to know about Jesus.

GR. 3-5: “The Gift Goes On” - Sandi Patty (w/ track) Gr. 4: The Father gave the Son The Son gave the Spirit Chorus: Gr.3&5 And the Gift goes on (Gr. 4 The Father The Spirit gives us life gave the Son) So we can give the Gift of love And the Gift goes on (The Son gave the Spirit) Gr. 3&5: And the Gift goes on And the Gift goes on (The Spirit gives us life) And the Gift goes on And the Gift goes on and on and on And the Gift goes on (So we can give the Gift of love) And the Gift goes on

Gr. 3: Don't you love to get a present Gr 5: When your life is full of Christmas Wrapped up in a Christmas bow Then your life is full of love God gave each of us a present You can give away the present On that night so long ao That began with God above It's a Gift that keeps on giving Just like ripples in the water If our spirits can receive The circles of our love extend It's the secret joy of living What was started with the Father If our hearts can just believe Is a Gift that has no end

Chorus 2x

Ava W.: Oh, I love receiving gifts at Christmas! I haven’t thought about Jesus being a gift to me!

Cole R: Me too! I love opening the gifts and oh, I have a long list this year!

Leah G: God gave the first gift of Jesus at Christmas, and then Wise Men brought gifts to Jesus. The wise men knew of the promised Messiah. They had been watching the stars and waiting for the promised Savior.

(Wise Men enter / star leads them)

Logan K.: You mean they knew that Jesus had been born because the stars told them?

Grace S.: Yes, isn’t that cool to think God communicates through his creation? They saw the star of Bethlehem and knew they would find the King of Kings there.

Samuel K: Matthew 2:1-2, “After Jesus was born in Bethlehem, in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, ‘Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him.’”

Joey W: Matthew 2:9-12 says, “After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was.”

Jake B: “When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshipped him.”

Kara N: “Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.”

Danny R: The wise men brought gifts to Jesus. What gift can you bring to offer to your king? Jesus wants us to give Him our whole heart, our talents, and our time and energy. For all the blessings He daily gives us, let’s remember to offer ourselves back to Him.

Solo/small Group: “Christmas Offering” - Paul Baloche (w/piano & guitar) Verse 1 – solo? Verse 2 – solo? Over the skies of Bethlehem appeared a star The sun cannot compare to the glory of Your love While angels sang to lowly shepherds There is no shadow in Your presence Three wise men seeking truth travelled from afar No mortal man would dare to stand before Your throne Hoping to find the Child from heaven Before the Holy One of heaven It's only by Your blood Falling on their knees they bowed And it's only through Your mercy Lord I come Before the humble Prince of Peace Chorus 2 – small group? Chorus 1 – small group? I bring an offering of worship to my King We bring an offering of worship to our King No one on earth deserves the praises that I sing No one on earth deserves the praises that we sing Jesus may You receive the honor that You're due Jesus may You receive the honor that You're due O Lord I bring an offering to You, I bring an offering to O Lord I bring an offering to You, I bring an offering to You You Repeat Chorus 2 CCLI Song No. 3956562 © 2002 Integrity's Hosanna! Extraordinary Celebration! (Grades1, 4 & 6)

Noah P: Wow! I am starting to understand why Jesus’ birth is such a huge celebration for us!

Nolari H.: Yes, His birth had been talked about for 2,400 years and the excitement and anticipation continued to grow. His birth announcement by the angels was super extraordinary!

Myanna Q: By Jesus coming to the earth, we have a Savior! God promised to send one and He did! God loves us more than we can ever imagine!!

Micah Y: This makes me think. Our celebration needs to be an “Extraordinary Celebration” also, not just some birthday party we have for one night and it is done.

Ellie R: That is right! Our celebration continues all year long. We have the invitation for a daily relationship with Jesus through prayer.

Ephraim Y: Prayers can come in many different forms. We praise God, we ask for things, we repent of sins and we give thanks in our prayers.

Analiese T: During our prayer time with the Lord, He gives us wisdom and strength to face each day. He fills us with the fruit of His Spirit and helps us follow His plan.

Sam A: We have an acronym to help us remember this important prayer time with Jesus.

Maddie W. Acro-what? What did you just say?!

Ana P: You may not know the name, but you know plenty of them!! Everyone knows them. What does BFF mean? Maddie W: Best Friends Forever Ana P: How about BRB? Maddie W: Be Right Back

Mya M: See you know them and sometimes they help you remember things. We have one for remembering our prayer time with Jesus. It is part of our celebration for life! P.A.R.T.Y. – party!

Kiley Party?! You want the word party to help me remember to pray?!

Rachael S: Yes it can! Let’s look at the letters and 1st Grade will help me. (Rachael continues with the letters & 1st grade group of 3-4 kids answers with the bold words)

P stands for Praise. Only God deserves our praise, our Lord God Almighty.

A stands for Ask. God tells us in the Bible to ask and we will receive.

R stands for Repent. Repent means to turn from our sin. Ashley F: That means going the opposite direction away from sin or temptation.

T stands for Thank God. Every blessing in our life is from God. Ashley F: We can’t forget that!

Y stands for Yes, God. God, we love you and want to do your will.

Anna M: I love parties! This is one party we can all have every day!

Harmon M: Yes, it is. God created us for a relationship with Him and that is where we find daily joy! As we have our birthday party for Jesus, remember to P.A.R.T.Y. every day in our prayer time with God!

Alyson R: How about you? Will you make this birthday party last all year long? Will you join us in this “Extraordinary Celebration” that continues our entire life?

Sophie S: We pray you will and spend time daily with your Savior, Jesus, to grow in the knowledge of Truth. Now please join us in singing Happy Birthday to Jesus!

“Happy Birthday” - traditional with congregation (a capella) Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday dear Jesus, Happy birthday to you!
