ABSTRACT ANGELS AND SUB-DIVINE SUPERNATURAL BEINGS: THEIR CHARACTERISTICS, FUNCTION, AND RELATIONSHIP TO GOD AND HUMANITY IN DEUTERONOMY-KINGS by Joni Amanda McGuire-Moushon Adviser: Roy E. Gane ABSTRACT OF GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH Dissertation Andrews University Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary Title: ANGELS AND SUB-DIVINE SUPERNATURAL BEINGS: THEIR CHARACTERISTICS, FUNCTION, AND RELATIONSHIP TO GOD AND HUMANITY IN DEUTERONOMY-KINGS Name of Researcher: Joni Amanda McGuire-Moushon Name and Degree of Faculty Adviser: Roy E. Gane, Ph.D. Date Completed: April 2019 This research analyzes selected passages in Deuteronomy-Kings in order to determine the characteristics and roles of supernatural sub-divine beings within these books. Then this data is compared with the angelology of the Second Temple period in order to identify the similarities and the extent of the differences between them. Deuteronomy contains references to supernatural sub-divine beings, such as “demons” and “holy one(s)”. While Deuteronomy affirms the existence of sub-divine beings, it forbids the Israelites to worship them. In the books of Joshua and Judges, there is awareness of supernatural beings and their roles as warriors, messengers, and tormentors. However, in Joshua 5:13-15 and Exodus 3:2-6, appearances of the Prince of the Host (of YHWH) should be interpreted as theophanies (cf. Daniel 8:10-11). Some “angel of the LORD” passages, such as Judges 6, can also be classified as theophanies. The books of Samuel contain many references to supernatural sub-divine beings, including angels, cherubim, and spirits, providing a fuller picture of the supernatural world. The angelic messengers and evil spirits found in the books of Samuel bear strong similarities to those in the New Testament. The books of Kings present a full pre-exilic picture of the supernatural world and humanity’s awareness of it. The “divine council” motif, the ministering angel, and chariots and horses of fire are found in these books. These books also portray a lying spirit and cherubim. Exilic and post-exilic angelology have many interesting, pronounced features. Some beings are named, further roles (i.e. vision-interpreter) are assigned, and the Accuser/Satan’s role in the cosmos becomes clearer. However, the differences between exilic/post-exilic and pre-exilic angelology have been overstated. Many of the New Testament and intertestamental conceptions about the supernatural world have roots in the pre-exilic period. Angels function in similar ways, as messengers, punishers, and ministers; spirits can cause havoc, and the concept of a spiritual battle (worshipping YHWH instead of demons) is present. The building blocks for the Second Temple period concepts about angels and other sub-divine beings have their basis in Deuteronomy- Kings, and one does not need to search for foreign (i.e. Mesopotamian, Persian, or Greek) origins of these ideas. • The Fall of Satan in the Thought of St. Ephrem and John Milton
Hugoye: Journal of Syriac Studies, Vol. 3.1, 3–27 © 2000 [2010] by Beth Mardutho: The Syriac Institute and Gorgias Press THE FALL OF SATAN IN THE THOUGHT OF ST. EPHREM AND JOHN MILTON GARY A. ANDERSON HARVARD DIVINITY SCHOOL CAMBRIDGE, MA USA ABSTRACT In the Life of Adam and Eve, Satan “the first-born” refused to venerate Adam, the “latter-born.” Later writers had difficulty with the tale because it granted Adam honors that were proper to Christ (Philippians 2:10, “at the name of Jesus, every knee should bend.”) The tale of Satan’s fall was then altered to reflect this Christological sensibility. Milton created a story of Christ’s elevation prior to the creation of man. Ephrem, on the other hand, moved the story to Holy Saturday. In Hades, Death acknowledged Christ as the true first- born whereas Satan rejected any such acclamation. [1] For some time I have pondered the problem of Satan’s fall in early Jewish and Christian sources. My point of origin has been the justly famous account found in the Life of Adam and Eve (hereafter: Life).1 1 See G. Anderson, “The Exaltation of Adam and the Fall of Satan,” Journal of Jewish Thought and Philosophy, 6 (1997): 105–34. 3 4 Gary A. Anderson I say justly famous because the Life itself existed in six versions- Greek, Latin, Armenian, Georgian, Slavonic, and Coptic (now extant only in fragments)-yet the tradition that the Life drew on is present in numerous other documents from Late Antiquity.2 And one should mention its surprising prominence in Islam-the story was told and retold some seven times in the Koran and was subsequently subject to further elaboration among Muslim exegetes and storytellers.3 My purpose in this essay is to carry forward work I have already done on this text to the figures of St.

1 TTHE DDOCTRINE OF AANGELS PPART 22 HOW ARE ANGELS ORGANIZED? Although the Bible doesn’t describe in detail the hierarchy within the angelic realm, enough evidence exists to show that some organization exists Classification 1. Archangel – the highest ranking angel Michael is the only angel designated archangel and may possibly be the only one of this rank His name means “who is like God?” Apparently, Michael is one of the chief princes (see #2 below) As the chief angel of God, he especially watches over Israel (Daniel 10:13, 21; 12:1) and leads the holy angels (Revelation 12:7) Jude 9~ But Michael the archangel, when he disputed with the devil 1 Thessalonians 4:16 ~ For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 2. Chief Princes Daniel 10:13 ~ But the prince of the kingdom of Persia was withstanding me for twenty-one days; then behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I had been left there with the kings of Persia. 3. Rulers, Authorities, Thrones, Dominions, Powers Colossians 1:16 ~ whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities-all things have been created by Him 4. Cherubim Cherubim are the highest group/order of angels, created with great powers and beauty Their main purpose is to proclaim and protect God’s glorious presence and sovereignty Genesis 3:24 ~ east of the garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim Exodus 25:22 ~ There I will meet with you; and from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim which are upon the ark of the testimony, I will speak to you about all that I will give you in commandment for the sons of Israel.

  • THE NATURE and POWER of SATAN Theorizing About the Nature
CHAPTER THREE THE NATURE AND POWER OF SATAN Theorizing about the nature, origin, and cosmological status of Satan occurs among the selected writings, especially among the later ones. However, there is an obvious lack of "speculative" interest in the sense of seeking to work out a complete cosmology of evil. Concepts as to the origin, abode, and ultimate future of Satan are often very diverse, and there are only a small number of referen ces. An analysis and interpretation of the nature of Satan as conceiv ed by the early Christian tradition will be therefore necessarily less comprehensive than a discussion of his activities. There are some basic understandings as to the nature and power of Satan common to most of the selected writers, however, and they are best summarized by the New Testament phrases: Satan, the "prince of the power of the air," "ruler of demons," "ruler of the world," and "god of this age." A. SATAN: PRINCE OF THE POWER OF THE AIR 1. Origin of Satan For the most part, the New Testament writers make no theoreti cal assertions as to the origin of Satan. However, a number of passages by choice of words and phraseology seem to reflect the idea of Satan as a fallen angel who is chief among a class of fallen angels, an idea which appears frequently in apocalyptic literature.1 II Peter 2 :4, for example, refers to the angels that sinned and were cast into hell. Jude 6 mentions "the angels that did not keep their own position but left their proper dwelling ..

Christian Angelology Angelology Introduction Why study Angels? They teach us about God As part of God’s creation, to study them is to study why God created the way he did. In looking at angels we can see God’s designs for his creation, which tells us something about God himself. They teach us about ourselves We share many similar qualities to the angels. We also have several differences due to them being spiritual beings. In looking at these similarities and differences we can learn more about the ways God created humanity. In looking at angels we can avoid “angelic fallacies” which attempt to turn men into angels. They are fascinating! Humans tend to be drawn to the supernatural. Spiritual beings such as angels hit something inside of us that desires to “return to Eden” in the sense of wanting to reconnect ourselves to the spiritual world. They are different, and different is interesting to us. Fr. J. About 6BE03 Angels 660 Mason Ridge Center Dr. St. Louis, MO 63141-8557 • www.lhm.org by Donald L. Deffner I grew up during the Great Depression in the early 1930s. My father was a minister. Behind our small home was a dirt alley which led nine blocks to downtown Wichita, Kansas. I can remember when I was a boy the hungry, destitute men who came to the back door begging for food. My mother never turned them down. She shared what little we had, even if only a couple of pieces of bread and a glass of milk. My mother didn’t just say, “Depart in peace! I’ll pray for you! Keep warm and well fed!” (See James 2:16.) No. She acted. She gave. Often I was curious about these mysterious and somewhat scary men. I had a sense that they were “different” than I was, not worse, not better, just different.

  • MIN ANGEL Summary Overall
MIN ANGEL Summary Overall - General sense of moving practice forward, positive direction for most, more direct painting language on a non-high art, disposable ‘punk’ support, personal and universal themes of life/death and memories. Allegorical and spiritual references. Humorous, tender, sad, unsettling, intriguing, immediacy. An exploration of image relationships within the composition and in relation to the configurations of the support and the conversations the support introduces in painting materially and thematically in particular in terms of time and space. The ‘reveal’ of the box. Handing paint with authority and fluidly, ‘treating the paint as a new guest at the table’, forthright, painterly, graphic, illustrative. Good colour. Relationship of the three images. Reflecting on ways forward - Continue with cardboard, use the cardboard colour, build up from photos, directness of paint application, reconsider the dreamy, embrace drawing/ illustrative/graphic qualities. Consider compositions, explore single image paintings of the portraits hung close together, limit palette. Build up from photographic references. Draw more. Comments: Marcus Big changes! The card board is working very well, it seems to invite so much more in. This is early days to analyse the paintings in any depth or indeed the composition and painting so just enjoy letting the work emerge. Having said that........ I detect that these are about family and the source material is family photos. I love the male figure in the suit! The Dean Martinish figure. There is tons of good colour in this painting , the modelling in loose greys on the pink ground with cardboard fringes showing. This limited range really works well and has something of the nostalgia of old photos without being too restricted to monochrome.
