BLAZING A TRAIL ON DARWIN AIRWAVES The first 35 years of FM 104.1 Darwin 1981–2016 CARL COSSILL Charles Darwin University Darwin, Northern Territory 0909 Australia T. +61 8 89466266 E. [email protected] W. territoryfm.com © Carl Cossill, 2016 © Jih Seymour, 2016 Published June 2016 Assisted by the Office of Media, Advancement and Community Engagement, Charles Darwin University. Supported by the Northern Territory Government through the Northern Territory History Grants Program of the Department of Arts and Museums 2 FOREWORD When I arrived in Darwin in 1987 I had never heard of the concept known as community radio. Someone suggested that, as I had a background in the music industry in the UK, I should pop into the Darwin Institute of Technology and offer my services to 8 Top FM Radio. I was immediately intrigued and became a volunteer in training. Several weeks later I was presenting a Friday night rock show. Little did I realise that this small radio station in the far north of Australia would consume the next three decades of my life! I was hooked from the moment I started spinning vinyl records live on air. I enjoyed the shared passion with other music-loving volunteers, many of whom remain friends to this day. Since those early times I was lucky enough to work in every area of operations including recently ending my full-time working days as Station Manager. Many successful mainstream media professionals were taught their skills at FM 104.1. It was always a wonderful thing to witness them progress in their careers.

Official Publication of the International Conference of Symphony and Opera Musicians VOLUME 39, NO. 1 Online Edition January 2001 As ICSOM enters the third millennium, it is fitting that we study where we have been and where we have gone, in preparation for deciding where we should go in the future. Toward that end, the first three issues of this volume of Senza Sordino will focus on the origins and the growth of ICSOM during its near-40-year history. r This issue looks at the conditions in the orchestras and unions of the first half of the 20th Century that gave rise to ICSOM. r The March issue will chronicle the mostly positive changes that took place after the formation of ICSOM. r The June issue will profile the ICSOM of today, identifying the current issues being addressed by ICSOMs leaders and anticipating the old and new challenges that ICSOM can expect in the 21st Century. Dear Cub Leaders, Did you ever think that you would make such a difference in the life of a young boy, especially one that was not your own? But that is just what you are doing by being involved in the Cub Scout program. You may say, “I am not the den or pack leader, I just work on a committee or teach a craft, do I really make a difference?” The answer is a resounding YES! Yes, everybody that helps with the Cub Scouting program, no matter what your role is, has a positive and lasting influence on the life of some young scout. You are helping mold that scout in the early stages of his future. On his shoulders rests the future of our country and the world. Does this sound too grandiose? Remember that each of us started out with small steps. You are helping build his future one step at a time. Where that scout will go and what he will become we can only guess at, but his scouting experiences will forever be a part of what he is. I can think of nothing more wonderful and exciting than to be a part of the life of some young scout. The fact that you are involved in scouting shows that you deeply care about our youth and their future. On behalf of the board and myself, I thank you for continuing to “reach out and touch the future”. John E. Inman President Blackhawk Area Council November 9, 2002 Dear Scout Leader, Thank you for sharing your day with us.
