Entonces ocurrió un acontecimiento sin precedentes en la historia mundial: un barco parte hacia las colonias españolas en América con 22 niños como medio para transportar la vacuna para la viruela, intentando salvar la vida a miles de personas. Se denominará la Real Expedición Marítima Filantrópica de la vacuna y fue dirigida por el médico cirujano alicantino Francisco Xavier Balmis y Berenguer.
