TONIGHT’S GAME The Flyers host the Detroit Red Wings tonight in their 11th game of the year and sixth at home. The Flyers are 4-5-1 for nine points after a 4-3 win at Carolina on Sunday. The game is the first of the Flyers’ fourth back-to-back set already this season. They will finish it off tomorrow night in Brooklyn against the NY Islanders.

This is the first of two consecutive home games the Flyers play against Detroit, which is a rarity in their regular season schedule. The last time the Flyers played consecutive home games against the same opponent within a week’s time was 1987, when they played the NY Rangers on March 12 and March 17.

There have been two similar occasions since, but both with caveats – the most recent was in 1998, when they played consecutive home games against Washington; however , the games were five weeks apart (1/31 and 3/5) thanks to a pair of three-game road trips that straddled the 1998 Olympic break. Four years earlier, the Flyers played the Capitals in two consecutive home games in 1994; however, the second of the two games was played in Cleveland as part of the NHL’s two-season program of neutral site games that increased the schedule to 84 games for those two seasons.

1. DETROIT

This is the first of three meetings between the Flyers and Red Wings this season.

Wed., Nov. 2 – DET at PHI Tues., Nov. 8 – DET at PHI Sun., Dec. 11 – PHI at DET

The Flyers have won 11 consecutive games against the Red Wings here in Philadelphia. Their last regular season loss to Detroit here came back on January 25, 1997 (4-1 L). That was the first season for the Flyers’ current home, then called the CoreStates Center; the now-named Wells Fargo Center is celebrating its 20th anniversary this season.

Detroit is one of only three teams against which the Flyers have never secured an /shootout point for an extra-time defeat (the others are Dallas and Vancouver). The Flyers have one overtime win and one overtime loss against the Red Wings in their history; the overtime loss came back in March of 1999, which was the last season before the NHL began awarding points for overtime losses. Last season’s inaugural meeting in January was the first time the teams had ever gone to the shootout, in which Philadelphia prevailed. as described below.

LAST GAME Sunday, October 30: Flyers 4, Carolina 3 at PNC Arena – Brandon Manning scored his first career shorthanded goal with 12 minutes left in the third period and the Flyers held off the Hurricanes the rest of the way for a 4-3 win. Shayne Gostisbehere put the Flyers on the board during a power play with just over two minutes left in the first period. The game see-sawed from there, with Justin Faulk tying the score 1:01 into the second before Radko Gudas bagged his first of the year six minutes later. Carolina pulled ahead on a pair of goals in quick succession, first by Jeff Skinner 13 seconds past the game’s halfway point and then an unassisted goal for Viktor Stalberg less than two minutes after that. But Claude Giroux converted a feed from Wayne Simmonds with 2:46 left in the second to tie the game at the second intermission. Manning’s game-winner came after Pierre-Edouard Bellemare forced a turnover near the Flyers’ blue line and fed Manning in the neutral zone, who put a blast into the top left corner. Michal Neuvirth stopped 26 of 29 to take the win, while Cam Ward stopped 24 of 28 in the loss. Stars of the Game: 1 – Claude Giroux; 2 – Jeff Skinner; 3 – Justin Faulk.

RECENT GAME HIGLIGHTS

10/30 vs. CAR

Per the Elias Sports Bureau, it marked the first time since March 28, 2010 that three different Flyers defensemen scored in the same game. Matt Carle, Lukas Krajicek and Kimmo Timonen all tallied that night in a 5-1 home win vs. New Jersey.

Brandon Manning’s game-winning goal was his first NHL shorthanded goal and his second NHL game winner. The last time the Flyers won a game on a shorthanded goal was February 28, 2015 when Michael Del Zotto’s shorthanded goal 1:19 into the third period broke a 2-2 tie with the NY Rangers at the Wells Fargo Center.

In addition to his goal, Radko Gudas was credited with seven hits and one blocked shot. He was plus-2 in 22:45 of ice time, which led the team.

Shayne Gostisbehere now has four goals and seven points in six career games against the Hurricanes.

10/29 vs. PIT

The Flyers had 92 shot attempts to Pittsburgh’s 52. The 92 shot attempts are the most the Flyers have had in a game since at least 2005-06, which is when missed shots and blocked shots started being consistently tracked by the NHL.

The 42 shots on goal are the most the Flyers have had in a regulation loss to Pittsburgh since Nov. 27, 2002 when they had 43 in a 7-2 road loss. They are the most shots the Flyers have had in any game against Pittsburgh since Nov. 16, 2005, when they had 43 in a 3-2 overtime loss.

Per the Elias Sports Bureau, Pittsburgh’s three goals in 55 seconds were the second-fastest trio of goals scored against the Flyers in franchise history, and the fastest that didn’t involve a penalty shot. New Jersey scored three goals in 42 seconds in a 5-5 tie on Nov. 23, 1991, the third of which was on a penalty shot.

Jake Voracek had two goals, the first of which was his 100th as a Flyer. He had a career high 9 shots on goal, and 11 total attempts.

Wayne Simmonds had a goal and an assist, six shots on goal and 10 total shot attempts.

Sean Couturier was 14 for 19 (74 pct) on faceoffs.

Brayden Schenn led all players with seven hits.

Ivan Provorov had nine shot attempts, including five that were blocked.

Matt Read also has five goals on the season. He is already nearly halfway to his 11 goals scored in 79 games last season, and is past halfway of the eight goals scored in 80 games in 2014-15.

The Flyers are third in the league with 3.50 goals scored per game but are 29th in goals against per game at 3.89. The Flyers and their opponent have combined for four or more goals in all 10 of the team’s games so far this season, six or more in eight of the 10 games, and nine or more in four of them.
