HARRYWHITEANDIRVINGL.FINSTON Our article included in this issue, “The Two River Narratives in ‘Heart of Darkness,’” showed that Joseph Conrad imagined Kurtz’s Inner Station to be located on the Kasai River and not on the Congo as has been gener- ally assumed. We now ask how one of the most important, influential, and widely read and studied works of modern fiction has been so con- sistently and unquestioningly misread for so long on such a basic level. In what follows we show that something akin to a cover-up was initi- ated by the author regarding the location and direction of Charlie Mar- low’s voyage. We will then reveal the primary source for many of the current interpretations and misinterpretations of “Heart of Darkness” by showing how one very influential scholar was the first to place Kurtz’s station on the wrong river. Nowhere in any of his writings did Conrad report that Marlow’s venture into the heart of darkness followed his own voyage from Stan- ley Pool to Stanley Falls. Nowhere in “Heart of Darkness” does it say that Marlow voyages up the Congo to find Kurtz.

Dressler 2 Key words Abstract A catalogue of 29 German individuals who were active in the botanical exploration of Angola during the 19th and 20th centuries is presented. One of these is likely of Swiss nationality but with significant links to German Angola settlers in Angola. The catalogue includes information on the places of collecting activity, dates on which locations botanical exploration were visited, the whereabouts of preserved exsiccata, maps with itineraries, and biographical information on the German explorers collectors. Initial botanical exploration in Angola by Germans was linked to efforts to establish and expand Germany’s plant collections colonies in Africa. Later exploration followed after some Germans had settled in the country. However, Angola was never under German control. The most intense period of German collecting activity in this south-tropical African country took place from the early-1870s to 1900. Twenty-four Germans collected plant specimens in Angola for deposition in herbaria in continental Europe, mostly in Germany. Five other naturalists or explorers were active in Angola but collections have not been located under their names or were made by someone else.     Postcolonial Text, Vol 8, No 2 (2013) Livingstone’s 1871 Field Diary: A Multispectral Critical Edition (http://livingstone.library.ucla.edu/1871diary/) The Livingstone Spectral Image Archive (http://livingstone.library.ucla.edu/livingstone_archive/) Reviewed by Thomas Hendriks, KU Leuven University, Belgium In 1871, when the world had lost track of David Livingstone’s acclaimed expedition in search of the source of the Nile River, Livingstone spent several months in Nyangwe, an Arab trading settlement on the eastern bank of the Lualaba River in what is now the Maniema Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo. His expedition had taken much more time than expected due to illness, accidents, forested terrain and the continuing resistance of his so-called “Banian slaves” (a group of liberated Zanzibari slaves who had been hired to assist him). Running out of provisions, he spent almost four months in Nyangwe negotiating for a canoe in order to continue his travels downstream the Lualaba. On the 15th and 16th of July, however, Livingstone witnessed a horrifying massacre of men and women who had come to the Nyangwe regional market and were slaughtered by slave and ivory traders and their armed auxiliaries. Livingstone was so shocked by these events that he aborted his further travel plans and returned to his operating base at Ujiji near Lake Tanganyika, where, in the weeks after his arrival, he famously met Henry Morton Stanley, who had been sent by the New York Herald to look for the lost British explorer. The meeting of these two men, and Stanley’s iconic “Dr. Livingstone, I presume,” came to resonate widely in the imperial imagination.

Those policies culminated in the formation of the first East African Community (EAC I) in 1967 between Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. The EAC was built on a foundation of integrative polices started by Britain and Germany, who began formal colonization in 1885 as a result of the General Act of the Berlin Conference during the Scramble for Africa. While early colonial polices did foster greater integration, they were limited in important ways. Early colonial integration was bi-lateral in nature and facilitated European monopolies. Early colonial policies did not foster broad economic integration between East Africa’s neighbors or the wider world economy.
