Some of it has always been in my mind. But for the most part, it is the result of an extraordinary learning process, which began at the University of Michigan in September 2004, and continued in Mozambique, in Belgium, and in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Many people and institutions made this dissertation a possibility, and its completion a reality. My thanks go in the first place to Nancy Rose Hunt, with whom I have worked since my arrival at Michigan, and who taught me such a great deal about African history, about the Congo, and about writing. My research in Belgium and the Democratic Republic of Congo, in 2007, 2008, and 2009 was made possible by an International Dissertation Research Fellowship from the Social Science Research Council (IDRF-SSRC), a student grant from the U.S. State Department’s Fulbright program, and by a fellowship from the Belgian-American Educational Foundation (BAEF). In the Democratic Republic of Congo a great number of people were key to my success and well-being.
